Running a Half Marathon

Recommended Posts

I have Hoka Clifton 9 which I wear for slower longer runs, I then have some saucony endorphin pro 3 which have a carbon plate and I wear when aiming to go faster. The difference is extremely noticeable. It’s almost hard to run slowly in the saucony’s. However I do still love the hokas.

Yeah I've been looking at the carbon plated ones - budget wise not an issue but i don't want to be jumping into the £250+ ones yet!

Check out Start Fitness. They tend to have last seasons trainers at a great price.

The carbon plated ones tend to be more geared for race-day running, so are built for maximum performance with a relatively short 'life' before they start breaking down. There's no reason you can't run in them as your regular trainer, but for most people the extra benefit aint worth the (far) higher cost/mile and its just overkill.

Get down to a running shop and test a few out if you can - all the big brands have a good range of options for different purposes, but its very much a personal thing as to what works for you. I know a few people who swear by Saucony Kinvaras as their daily shoe but they played havoc with my ankles, I ended up settling for Brooks Adrenaline as my regular shoes and Nike Pegasus for races. Just getting back into it now after a few years off and picked up a pair of UnderArmour Hovr Sonic's for £30 from sports direct and they seem to fit me quite well so far, picking up last season's models can definitely net you a bargain as there's usually very little difference between releases.

Any recommendations on running shoes? I want to start going to around 15-20k, comfortably doing 8-10k atm but not in proper shoes at all

As others have suggested, definitely worth spending more and even going to a shop to get them fitted. I increased my weekly load drastically at the start of the year then blew up with really bad shin pain at the end of March towards the end of the Wakefield 10k. When I spoke to the physio he reckons that the increase in the load wearing my Nike Pegasus (which didn’t suit my feet) had led to me putting more weight on the inside of my right leg over and over again which led to some severe shin splints. I’m 2 weeks back now and have built up to 20 mins still using my Nikes but with a specialised insole, then when I get paid I’ll be going to get sorted for the right shoes because I’m not going through that again lol

Ran the Leeds Marathon yesterday

Brutal course but in fairness the locals turn out in numbers to cheer you on

4hrs 47mins so not great but I will take that under the circumstances

Well done mate, I always keep flirting with the idea of Leeds but the course puts me off.

Id be dead happy with that time on a tough course, warm weather and the sorts!

Well done mate. No easy task on that course or in that heat! I did the half, I was absolutely dead the last couple of Km. Atmosphere was unreal, as you say the city and suburbs really do turn out, it was great to be a part of it.

I think I’ll have nightmares about the stretch after you’ve gone through Headingley. It feels like it never ends and constantly uphill. I’d do another one, but not that one!
