Ale Wagon was great today. Cask selection as strong as ever, the Charnwood guest ale was tasty (not blue fox).

Well, the Wagon had Bathams on! Sadly being with the missus, I wasn’t going to bring her into 1954 time warp that is the Wagon but what an opportunity missed to drink the Black Country nectar

In fact, the area around DMU seems completely devoid of any pubs and bars at all now.

Swan and Rushes, Bowling Green, The Charlotte, The Quay, that weird Glo bar that used to be there. All gone.

Seems to be just Riley's sports bar and Soar Point left.

The fvck are students doing nowadays? Studying?

The Robert Peel's still about, though.

It was my venue of choice for a lunchtime tipple while working at DMU back in the day.

I go there quite often as opposite my office. Some people don’t like the beer but I think they’re just not big fans of cask. They always have something new on and that’s a bonus if you’re a keen ticker like myself.

Welcome break from the swathe of big standard selection pubs. Even the two BCA pubs don’t have as wide a range and I’m not bothered by craft either so I enjoy it a lot.

I do like craft but I never get a pint of it. I can savour a pint for forty minutes after work, decompress and go home. Ale wagon is perfect for that. Some outstanding scenes in midweek also, quite often they’ll be about 6/7 blokes all there by themselves, reading their papers in a row. Unique in the city.

Interesting…. It’s not just me then!

The classroom is my local and my lad works there occasionally…. Lovely place, but I can’t get on with the beers and finding myself drinking lager….

Overly sweet craft beer can be totally undrinkable to my pallet…. Anything beyond a couple of sips and I’m done…

I’ve also found myself drifting to darker ales…. My default is a nice golden beer, but I’m enjoying amber more and more….  3.8% - 4.2% is my sweet spot….

Langton Brewery does stunning beer and I just got a crate of Abbeydale Moonshine in cans delivered - nectar!

Will aim to do Black Horse, Castle, Cherry Tree before onto Duffy's on Friday afternoon with a lad over from Bochum.

Did exactly did run (well, in order Cherry Tree, Castle, Black Horse then Duffy’s due shenanigans) on Saturday lol

Considered doing a summer crawl this year, minus Duffy’s and then Ale Wagon, the Marquis and finishing off at the Old Horse.

Don't think I published the Leicester crawl we did Man City at home

The Globe

Wygston House

Salmon

The Castle

Black Horse

Queens Road Tap

Clarendon

Black Horse

Marquis

Kings Head

Katie O'B

Tonne

Being a Sunday, the pickings were slim towards the end in town

Looks like The Friary has closed down.
And Brewdog building looks it’s being turned into a Bar/Lounge according to the signage.

The Castle is magnificent.

I always seem to time a visit to the Cherry Tree badly with the bass being off.

When it’s good it’s very good…. But I’ve had a couple of iffy pints and the odd occasion when it’s run out

Moving to Stoneygate this week. Looking forward to being in very walkable distance to The Cradock, real ale classroom, Queens Road Tap and The Clarendon. Not to forget The Offie. Nearest ‘acceptable’ boozer to Western Park has always been the Black Horse- still a thirty minute walk.

Dos Hermanos for a 'Latin' vibe

Black Horse feels very unlike a Leicester pub imo and it’s all the better for it. Unique exterior and interior with the Toby jugs and other ornamental knick-knacks, old school toilets, comedy venue and food.

When did the Kings Heqd get the standard BCA refurb? Not as garish as the Salmon but the busy wallpaper, upholstery and carpet is too much.

It's been happening there since the 1980s at least.

One of the reasons why I head for the Salmon when I'm in that part of town.
