I have Seen some posters, through the Forum, mention past and Future exploits,of

Travelling Off the beaten track.Away from the masses, and taking on new paths, and adventures.

Thought it might be interesting to have a topic.Exchange Experiences or give Tips to Future,

Sven Hedin/Marco Polo types.

My time 70s,80s and 90s of wild travel and adventure are now behind me and my Family.

Mainly now because of my worn Out Body and modern disabilities.

Though 2 of my daughters have now taken Up the Travelling Bug.

I travelled Alone/with girlfriend/wife/wife + Kids,All self-organised,Backing,Trekking/expeditions,

Through Africa-Asia-east China,Americas. Drove/Trekked many a  dangerous paths n Roads,

fortunately before taking on  that unknown, turn or bend, where only  bandits and smugglers,

,even Freedom fighters, were the only 2nd thoughts of some concern.

unlike todays  fear of terrorism and fatal Kidnapping,

which has took over many Corners of the world .

If would be very interesting,to hear from Younger generations who  have Just Started Out,or about  to Set out,to discover ..Whats over those Hills and  to be tackled old/new undiscovered Paths/Road/Rivers.

No Matter the how or where it maybe.

I read under the Motorbike thread, somebody was prepairing to Ride through Africa,

now that should be interesting...!

I wish I'd been more adventurous when I was young. Alas I've had a 20 year run of bad fortune through bad relationships and debt. If you're young, don't waste any time or you might waste your chance to go exploring, adventuring and testing yourself.

I used to do a lot of off-the-beaten track type travelling, like walking across Balkan mountains and sleeping in fields for a week or hitchhiking across Turkey with no fixed destination. Patrick Leigh Femour's your man if you want to read about some 'wild' travelling.

Would love to do something like that but realistically it’s unlikely. The idea of being out in the wild with nobody around appeals very much at times.

I spent months at a time living that way when I was younger, just dipping into ‘civilisation’ to resupply with food.

It’s incredibly liberating.

Did about three years in Asia, Oz, NZ and a bit of Europe on the way home. Great times. The best of times in actual fact, but by the end I was properly broke and had become a functioning alcoholic so I thought I better rejoin ordinary society for a while to sort myself out. Then the kids came along and since then I’ve never been able to justify the expense of longer trips. Which is a shame, but at least I did get to see a bit of the world, and hopefully still have a few adventures left in me yet.

Not sure I could manage for months but a week would be bliss. The stresses of modern life mean I would love to go off the grid and live like a cave man haha.

Slight opposite to this but sort of fits this thread but I have applied to go on a charity trip to Cambodia to help build a school, really hoping I get a place on that.

I know you’re into hiking - wouldn’t you consider a long distance wilderness hike like one of the US triple crown hikes, for example? It’s a truly life changing experience that I’d recommend to anyone without committments.

I’d love it mate it’s whether I could persuade the other half which probably wouldn’t be as easy.

I’ve looked at all sorts to be honest and motivated by achievements so something like that would be a pretty cool thing to do. I’ve seriously looked into Kilimanjaro but that’s some serious cash.

Girlfriend dumped me 2 months ago, booked myself a trip to the North East of the USA then into Canada, it's only a 3 week solo trip as I work but it's something I always wanted to do. Could be the maddest thing I've ever done and I have no idea what it'll be like but there's no harm in finding out.

Shag everything that moves

It's not what most people would class as travel but along the way there have been plenty of adventures, backpacking, expeditions and trekking in my quest to complete the Scottish Munros. It took 18 years to walk up all the 284 peaks in Scotland. I know people who have been to Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp and in some ways they are much easier because most people do them as a client on a commercial expedition. The outfit you book with sort out all the food and accommodation and basically make all the harder decisions for you. Are there any other Foxestalkers who have done anything like this?

Excellent!!

There are also many great adventures and Personal targets to have/find  close to home.

One doesnt have to travel so far and wide, to taste that fresh air of other cultures ,Climes,or

Wild Nature adventures.

Just to Pick Up in a Point on "organised longhaul" package adventure Breaks and Experiences.

Some prefer (Not I) ,to go on pre-planned/organised exotic easy/wild/adventure escapades,

If its that what floats their boat..it still allowed them to get away..Brill.!!

Though in my own travels in the distant or recent past,I came across many various Peoples, who

organised their own travels, and Part of that experience is sharing with each Other, those

at the moment accumalated anecdotes and experiences, including those people, from all nations one comes across, who have taken a "package adventure"

My expedition-Lorry allowed me to get to areas, far away from known  "tourists/traveller" areas,

then suddenly, after weeks/Months one suddenly Hears the suprising lingo, from English/German shores.

To my pleasant suprise,it was always interesting to find even Younger people finding their Independence,

and discover their new Lands Off their own Back.

But I agree totally, remote adventures can be found around the UK or in areas of our european neighbours.

The Munros, and targets must of been a marvellous experience,I have Trekked some parts, but Not to climb.

I took my wife-then girlfriend on some UK-hikes/treks,but Strangely enough my children,I never

took them to any of  the great remote walks of the UK.

Out of interest are you in the Munro society,or Registered "compleater".whatever, Well done kiddo!

Having to work and pay a mortgage I haven’t been able to do he whole months across Asia thing.

But i I do like to take two/three weeks in Europe visiting countries with low tourism such as Kosovo, Maccedonia and Serbia.

To keep me going I purchased a map of Europe and set a goal to travel to every capital in europe, 21 countries in and many “big” countries to go!

Luckily both my partner and friends are on board so willing to travel to Capitals even when there is next to nothing there, Podgorica to name one!

Most are cheap flights there and back and  supported by cheap train travel, if not coaches are available.

Do you mean persuade her to let you go alone or persuade her to come with you? I've met quite a few couples doing it together so it's not without precedent.

Maybe you could both read some of the journals on here to inspire you.

It's great. It's not too difficult. Hop on a two-and-a-half-hour plane to somewhere like Sofia or Bucharest or even some city in the south of Italy, get a train two hours and start walking, sleep in a field, come back next day. Weekend in the wilderness.

Shameless self promotion but here's a small article on a couple of week-long walks I did. It's in Bulgarian but there are photos. Turned off all electrical appliances for five days, and before you say it the photos were taken on an analogue camera. Very liberating, as Buce says.

Bollox to back-packing, hosteling and all that game. I’d like to see more of the world but when I do it will be staying in nice hotels, eating great food and flying on smart aircraft

That is a fantastic read - still haven't watched the film yet though. If I had to live the way he did I would almost certainly last around 3 hours before becoming hungry and eating something toxic.

The most adventurous travel I've ever done was hiking into the Grand Canyon with my wife last fall. Arizona's landscape was just so amazingly unique and beautiful. The changes in elevation, the orange/reddish color of the dirt and the rocks. I completely fell in love with it and can't wait to go back.

I also enjoy a nice long road trip. There's something so relaxing about driving down the coast or through the forest on a sunny summer day. The more isolated and untouched by civilization, the better.
