sphericalfox Posted 18 June 2018 Posted 18 June 2018 I think the comments on other threads about how we are going to comply with FFP are a genuine concern, especially with our spend already so far. I had my specific worries about who might we need to clear off the books, but also who might go who we certainly don't want to lose. Two players that come to mind are Maguire and Ndidi. The top four are desperate for a decent CB, and rumours have been mooched around about interest in Maguire. If he has a good WC could this start a bidding war, and would we accept a significant bid if it allowed us to manage our finances and upgrade elsewhere? Ndidi has been excellent for us, and statistically is one of the best in the league for the job he's been asked to do. Again if you were in the top 4 clubs you'd be looking at him with interest. I'm thinking with Kante also looking potentially off to PSG, could Chelsea come knocking on our door? I don't think they would be the only ones either. We'd be talking significant sums again. I don't want to lose either of them, but if we are looking to balance the books would the club look to cash in after the WC?

Most top teams now want deep lying playmakers or players who are able to play through the press of the opposition. That's why Man City want Jorgenio & Arsenal want that torreira fella. I cant see maguire leaving - Man City have just spent £60m on a CB to add to their collection (stones, kompany, Otamendi, mangala), same with man United (Jones, Smalling, Bailey, Lindelof, Tuanzabie), Liverpool maybe? But I can see them keep with lovren - Van Dijk partnership as they looked solid towards the end of last season. Chelsea have; Christieansen, luiz, Cahill, Rudiger, Zouma , Amadou and azpi - so they ain't signing a CB. The only option I can see is Spurs, would they be able to afford him? I think not. This opinion will divide, but I could not care a less if we sold Maguire for a huge profit. I personally think he's overrated by alot of people and I know I'm not the only one with that opinion either. He's a liability when he go's on his runs forward and has made countless mistakes this season. The fee for him would be huge I'd definitely take it. 1
Captain... Posted 18 June 2018 Posted 18 June 2018 Iborra is probably the most Puel player we have, I know he has expressed concerns with how he has integrated into the team and hasn't always seemed happy here, but as a player to recycle the ball keep possession and play a patient game picking out the player in space he is one of our most suited players. By not bombing forwards he also helps screen the back 4. Adds an aerial threat too. He wouldn't be top of my list of players to sell, but if he goes I won't be too upset. We do need to start trimming the squad especially with Maddison seemingly on his way.

If we don't sign anymore CM's this window, then I think he will and should be our 3rd choice, behind N'didi and Silva. I'd much prefer if we get rid of King, James and Mendy before Iborra. That would leave us with N'didi, Silva, Iborra and Choudary for two starting spots if Puel sticks with 2 CM's. I wouldn't be against holding on to Mendy and giving him 6 months though. He may still be able to come good here, especially under Puel. 1

At the moment I'd rank our CMs as Ndidi, Iborra, James (if fit), Silva. The height advantage that Iborra gives us at set pieces at both ends of the pitch can easily add up to a couple of points difference across the season. Still not convinced on Silva in a midfield 2. 1

I still think there is a lot more to come from Silva. The guy is obviously highly thought of considering he got into the Portugal squad again. He needs to toughen up for sure, but he is definitely a step up over James in ability IMO. I'm a fan of Iborra but I just don't think he has the stamina to get through 38 games. I think Silva is more of a work horse in that sense. Iborra's strength is a key to him settling here quicker than Silva I think, but once Silva adapts, I expect him to be ahead of him for a starting spot. Great to have those two fighting for a start though. I think the injuries to James have caught up with him and he will struggle now to reach the level we require. He will be adequate as a 4th choice, much like King has been last couple of seasons, but I think we should be aiming higher than that now. Loftus-Cheek on season long loan...

Agree he can be pretty defensively dodgy at times (although seems to have improved). Maybe he's got a future at LWB? 1 1
STUHILL Posted 18 June 2018 Posted 18 June 2018 Thought Maguire was dodgy first half but was one of our best players in the second. Kept driving forward whenever possible and was a real threat in the box. It didn't help him that there was no movement ahead and everything was so slow and pedestrian. He will get better and better and be starting CB for England for many years IMO. We are very lucky to have him.

CosbehFox Posted 18 June 2018 Posted 18 June 2018 Musa currently tweeting and replying to Galatasaray fans is either the move of someone as thick as a brick house or the deal is all but done.

All of them are saying good luck or god bless, a few have added 'come to galatasaray' at the end. He's just thanking them for their wishes. I don't think it means anything, much as I would like it to.

Never said we don't need to reduce our numbers and offload the likes of Ulloa, Musa etc. Those players have been discussed to death. I was specifically referring to FFP and how we need to meet it yet still strengthen across the team
lgfualol Posted 19 June 2018 Posted 19 June 2018 Cardiff would make sense for Simpson, still a great defender and Warnock forbids attacking so he will be involved a lot. 1
