I thought Maguire was decent tonight. He absolutely has to start in the first game.

Vardy, well.  We all know what he can do but it just doesn't really fit with how England play.  You can't realistically pick him over Rashford or Kane if they are going to play the way it looks like the will do.  He's just a spare part in that set up.

He will probably be an impact sub for the last 20 or so if we are chasing a game I expect or looking to see a win out as he is a better outlet when it's a case of making hoofs up the pitch when under the cosh.

Vardy is a quality player but only when the system allows him to be.  England's just doesn't suit him.

Aye you were right.

Sig worthy material

But yeah probs won't be seeing him start again unless its alongside we play another front 2 like today.  Question is does Rashford's goal today put him ahead in the pecking order now?

I thought it was a nice touch that for England’s first game in Yorkshire for about 10 years we started with 5 Yorkshiremen (Stones, Maguire, Rose, Delph, Vardy).

So annoying for Vardy the timing of it. Awful time for him to have an off game.

It's pretty obvious that he'd been given a role to play that wasn't really supported by the team to give him the most direct input on the game, even as it gave those behind and Rashford more room.  Here's hoping they recognise him for the role he played and its impact, not his time in possession.

Not sure why some people thought Maguire was bad, thought he was very good and I would be disappointed if he doesn't start.  This new England system seems to rely on the two wider CBs being able to play out from the back and I would argue that Maguire is better than any of the others (even Stones) at that.  The only worry is that he plays safe and ops for Cahill or Jones alongside Stones and uses Walker as RCB.  I personally would rather see Walker at RWB but we'll see.  As for Vardy let's just hope he comes on as a sub in the first game, plays and absolute blinder, bangs in a couple of goals and forces his way into the team.

So frustrating that after a great season, Vardy had probably fallen down the order due to 60 mins in a friendly when no one passed to him. Rashford has barely played this season and hasn't done a lot for England since the Euro's, yet one wonderful goal and people are calling for him to start. I'm hoping that Southgate is less reactive and fickle that the English media.

In matches against teams that don't park the bus or matches where we may have to park the bus, there is no better striker than Vardy for England. Look at his record against the top six. Southgate would be crazy not to utilize him against the likes of Belgium, Columbia, Spain, Germany etc.

Vardy ineffective against teams that are going to sit behind the ball, nothing new there. Anyone with a brain knows that Vardy will be best utilised against the better sides, and his record proves it. Problem is they won't be brave enough to play Kane and Vardy against someone good, it will be the extra man in midfield. People need to get over the lack of touches too, its not his style to drop into midfield, receive the ball and give it straight back to the person who passed it to him. If he did that people will moan he's not in the box. I keep seeing people say Vardy is great impact sub when we're losing, he won't be if its against someone with 10 men behind the ball, like against Iceland.

I think Vardy has been slightly a different player this season, quiet in most games and barely involved but will pop up with a goal.

Rashford played well, and in this formation I'd have him start over Sterling definitely. Vardy only plays if Kane doesn't, Rashford is the better support striker.

I didn't think he was bad. He's already a VG player and did a lot of good stuff. But he was caught out of position a couple of times, allowing their right-side attacker in.

Against a better team than Costa Rica, that could well have been 2 clear chances on goal for the opposition - possibly 2 goals against someone like Germany.

That said, Stones looks shakier to me - gave the ball to the opposition in dangerous situations again.

Howsabout Walker-Cahill-Maguire as the back 3?

I know Cahill hasn't played much, but his experience might help as Maguire is still learning, and Walker is in a new position.

Hate to say it but Vardy is well down the pecking order and I doubt he'll make it onto the pitch in the first game. depending on what happens in our first two games he might get some minutes in the last group games but he is now counting on injuries to others to get some game time.

Yeah I agree he had a couple of wobbles I just felt like you he certainly wasn't any less good than any of the other defenders.  I would personally so for:

          Stones Cahill Maguire

Walker                                 Rose

but what the sh1t do I know?  I think he is worthy of a place but we'll see.  I worry he might leave Maguire out and revert to more tried and tested folk and go....

          Walker Stones Cahill

Trippier                             Rose

I really hope he plays as would be great to see a genuine England starter from Leicester.

We'll see. X
