Matty James

Can anyone explain why he's swapped one Championship team close to the play-offs for one with only one win in five?

Not worried, I'm pleased for him, but given he was playing often and apparently happy at Barnsley - and they with him - it just seems odd.

I'm probably missing something blindingly obvious........................

His loan finished this month, Barnsley weren't willing to pay the increased % of his wages to extend his loan, looks like Cov probably were

Really?

In 2014/15 he was generally first choice in a team that spent most of the season rock bottom of the league. He then started 5 or 6 games in the 10 match ‘great escape’ at the end of the season.

His replacement the following season helped us win the Premier League.

Is he really going to get in the side ahead of Tielemans, N’didi, Maddison, Praet or Mendy? I’d even have Hamza in before him.

I think people get blinded by sentiment with Matty James because of his dreadful misfortune with injuries. He just isn’t a top six PL midfielder and that is where we currently sit. He may not even be a top half PL midfielder.

As soon as possible he should go with our thanks and best wishes with good memories for his contributions for getting us to the PL and helping us to stay there.

Think you made a typo 🤔

His performance against Newport was poor I agree with that but writing him off for that is a bit unfair.

He more than proved his pedigree in 2014 2015 and the guy surely deserves one more crack at it. However that looks like it isnt going happen due to the Cov situation. Shame.

2014 was 7 years ago.  That’s an eternity in a footballers career. Time waits for no man.

Barnsley boss reveals reason behind Matty James's surprise switch to Coventry City
Tykes' manager Valerien Ismael says Sky Blues' new signing Matty James did a great job, bringing calm to his team

ByAndy TurnerSky Blues Reporter

Barnsley boss Valerien Ismael has revealed the reason behind Matty James’s surprise switch to Coventry City.

The Leicester City midfielder had impressed in 15 games during his three-month loan at Oakwell where he helped lift the Tykes from the bottom three to ninth in the Championship table.

The 29-year-old had indicated he’d like to extend his stay until the end of the season ahead of his initial spell expiring this week, and Ismael couldn’t speak more highly of the Foxes’ player with Premier League experience.

But it has emerged that despite the holding midfielder’s impact, the Reds decided not to extend the deal as the manager looks to the future development of younger players, namely the likes of Herbie Kane – a £1.25million summer signing who has mainly been a substitute – and Romal Palmer whom he wants to give a chance alongside captain Alex Mowatt.

Callum Styles, who has excelled at left wing-back, can also play there as can Toby Sibbick who has returned from a loan in Belgium.

“It was our decision,” Ismael told the Barnsley Chronicle.

“It was not an easy decision. You can see defensive midfield is an area where we have a lot of talent.

“We had an experienced player recovering from a long injury. We had to make a decision for the future and the club to see what we have in this position.

“We have trust in these players who have played very well.

“It is not a decision against Matty James, it is for the young guys."

Ismael couldn't speak more highly of James, adding: “Matty made a great job with his skills and his experience. He tried to implement the principles on the pitch quickly and it was a pleasure to work with him.

“I am delighted that we helped him to come back into his old form.

“We know he brought a lot of calm to the team but the young guys learned very well from him. We have many options – Toby Sibbick can play there and he is like a new player for us if we need him.”

Now watch Barnsley go plummeting down that table . Yes, one man can make the difference. Big mistake Mr. Ismael.

.....he doth protest too much.......!!!

Not sure I believe what he is saying and I think an order from above instructed him to make this move. You would want to do everything to retain your place in the league, money is tight at this moment and will be for sometime it seems and you look to at worst maintain the status quo. Yet they have chosen to give stability a heave ho, in order to give youth a chance.
