Liverpool 2 Leicester 1 post match thread

Good summary Ric, I think the solution to our problems away from home is to stick with our 4-1-4-1 system, regardless of opposition. As good as Tielemans, Praet and Maddison are we can’t shoehorn them into the side. One of them has to sit on the bench unfortunately. However, all 3 have different attributes so maybe we can rotate them on a semi regular basis, depending on the opposition.

Agree.  This is what quality in depth is all about. We can pick horses for courses, give players a rest, change things with subs etc. I know Maddison got the goal on Saturday, but for much of the game he looked off the pace. Whether due to playing out of position or still feeling the effects of his ankle knock will never know. Praet had a great game and brings a little more steel to the midfield without playing two out and out DMs. As you and everyone else can see though that trying to shoe-horn them all in means playing one or more out of position, invariably Maddison on the left. Not only is he not really suited to this role, but it actually stops us playing with someone who is a more naturally fit to the position, which also seems to cramp Chilwells style as he has little or no help.

The VAR decision was as predictable as it was disappointing and unfair, but over the whole match I think the scousers deserved the win, even though we put up a decent fight in the second half.

If the authorities really want to stamp out diving, there needs to be a change of emphasis. This idea of having “a right to go down” needs to be replaced with an obligation for players to try to stay on their feet. It is only then that the true impact of a potentially foul challenge can be assessed.

Where there is an obvious dive (such as Mane’s on Saturday) the small amount of contact should be ignored on the grounds that we don’t know to what degree it made any difference. In other words the dive negates the contact.

This is of course a double edged sword, which might mean that some of Vardy’s black art moves are also affected.

...when travelling at pace, minimal contact can lead to a player going down. I know in this instance that was not the case, but staying on your feet may not be so simple.

As for the team performance, we could and probably should have been 4 goals down before halftime. Liverpool's profligacy in front of goal was the only reason we were still in the game.

The fact we chose to set up like we did, being compact and attempting to negate their strengths, turned out to be a wasted opportunity.

The switch of Maddison going central gave us better options upfront and all in all we nearly stole a point.
