RonnieTodger Posted 7 March 2020 Posted 7 March 2020 I’d just have the top flight teams from Scotland and England. Says a lot about English cup competitions when Derby make several changes against Man United with **** all to play for in their league. Scottish teams go full strength in their cups. If we had 20 from England and 12 from Scotland, it makes a perfect 32 and contains 12 teams that actually want to win it. So what if we draw Ross County away? It’d be a laugh.
Leicesterpool Posted 8 March 2020 Posted 8 March 2020 I can just imagine Burton fans rushing to buy tickets to watch them play away to East Fife. Travel wise that isn't feasible for a lot of lower league clubs.

isaidno Posted 8 March 2020 Posted 8 March 2020 Let the last 4 of the English league cup merge with the last 4 of the Scottish league cup.

You'd need to have at least two, if not more, preliminary rounds just to avoid laughable mismatches like Manchester City vs Cardiff Metropolitan University.
RonnieTodger Posted 9 March 2020 Posted 9 March 2020 English, Irish and Welsh teams are in the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup along with Scottish lower league and U21 teams. If you can't get behind that competition, you're not a real football fan imo
String fellow Posted 9 March 2020 Posted 9 March 2020 As one who remembers mighty Leeds United being beaten at home and away by Celtic in the 1970 European Cup SF, not to mention Scotland's various wins over England before the Home Internationals were killed off, I don't altogether share the general feeling of disdain prevalent in this thread towards Scottish, Welsh, and Irish football clubs. Unless English clubs are given the opportunity to prove their superiority over clubs from other parts of of UK, how do can we be so sure that our disrespect for clubs like East Fife is justified? Personally, I'd enjoy seeing competitive games between clubs from different parts of the UK. At present, there's a possibility of playing the same PL club in both domestic cup competitions in one season, as well as twice in the PL itself. How boring is that?
Sly Posted 9 March 2020 Posted 9 March 2020 We were chatting about this today at work. We came to the conclusion that Manchester City Vs East Fife / Petershead / Airbus UK is no worse than them matching Stevenage now. What may be better, is the scrapping of the community shield and having a mini tournament with the top 4 teams from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland play in a mini tournament pre season for the “UK Cup”.

No it is really is. Stevenage are a team of paid professionals who train every day, some of whom have been put through top academies. The other clubs you mention train twice a week, semi pros or maintain full time jobs

Because they're part of the British Isles, though not Great Britain. Which is why the British Lions rugby team includes Irish players. The question should be, why wouldn't teams from Ireland be playing in a British Cup? With the answer being, because they're crap. I'd like to see Scottish teams included, just to stop Celtic and Rangers prattling on about joining the EPL, because they're annually being knocked out in the third or fourth round by the likes of Reading and Bristol City.
fuchsntf Posted 10 March 2020 Posted 10 March 2020 Leave it alone... Its " THE league cup. ". The 4 English leagues..!! Those teams in the 3 lower leagues, would struggle to fit in extra fixtures ,also travel more than they do now..!!! Its a simple question of costs. without club representation from These lower leagues, its not worth beginning to think about it...!

I'm sure Klopp and the other managers/teams would welcome the opportunity to play a few extra games, but I guess they could always play the u23s although they might be busy play FA Cup games so maybe the U18s could play.
Guest Bilo Posted 11 March 2020 Posted 11 March 2020 It would work only on the basis of it having preliminary rounds like the FA Cup. Theoretically, Coalville Town could play Liverpool at Owen Street in the Third Round. Realistically, they'd need to win as many games as Liverpool would to win the cup just to get to Round Three. You'd probably need a structure like this: Preliminary: Scottish League Two, Welsh Premier League First Qualifying Round: Scottish League One, Northern Ireland Premier League Second Qualifying Round: Scottish Championship, League Two First Round: League One Second Round: Championship, SPL Third Round: Premier League
