EFL Cup should be revamped as the 'British Cup', says David Moyes

It'd be like a bigger and more unwieldy version of the EFL Trophy with the big clubs sending out the kids to play against weak sides in empty stadiums.

Aberystwyth Town fans aren't going to turn out in numbers to see a Leicester City side containing Bartosz Kapustka and Faiq Bolkiah.

It would only start to get interesting in the later rounds once it's essentially all Premier League and, perhaps, Celtic or Rangers on a run.

Would be all for it personally. I find it a bit weird how we've played Atletico Madrid 6 times but have never had a competitive match against the likes of Celtic or Rangers.

Would love the British Home Championship to return too.

The league cup began life as a competition to enable clubs to rake in some cash by staging games under those new fangled floodlights.

Great idea in 1960.

Fast forward 60 years & its now a joke. A ressies cup that no fecker is interested in till the semis.

Scrap it.

Add Ireland and Scotland imo, big away day Dublin sounds class

Why would teams from Ireland be playing in a British cup?

Absolute mad idea - unless you have early rounds without the big boys, there’s every chance you have a team of semi professionals at level of say Coalville playing Liverpool.

Whilst we are at it Davey, why don’t we bring back Anglo Italian Cup

Or the Watney Cup?

The EFL Cup is only the PL and the EFL it's not like the FA Cup so presumably would just be the SFL, NIFL (if there is one) and the WFL.

My point is that the Welsh and Northern Irish teams contain players at the same level as who play currently for Coalville Town.

It's more entertaining than the FA Cup in my opinion. Be such a shame if they binned it.

The only way it'd work imo - but I can't imagine cash-strapped Macclesfield taking too well to having to arrange transport to Northern Ireland on a Tuesday night for little reward.

The Scottish Challenge Cup have had 2 selected top flight teams from Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland for the past few seasons and only once have one of those teams got as for as the final

The Scottish Challenge Cup is esentially the Checkatrade Trophy in England albeit 2nd tier teams are allowed in too.

This puts it into perspective and why the Moyes' idea is pointless.

I think it would be a good idea, it would give this downtrodden competition some much needed buzz and make it more interesting. it would also be good to see how teams from Scotland would do, most notebly Celtic and Rangers playing against English teams regularly. although they would likely use it as a pre curser to joining the Premier League or having a British Premier League!.

I'm still at a total loss as to why anyone would want to import that level of hatred and sectarian bigotry, not to mention the crowd trouble that goes with it, into English football.

I see this point but we have Swansea and Cardiff? Why not Celtic and Rangers. It may help change things - dunno. I’d quite like to go to those grounds and certainly whilst it would be a nightmare with fans to begin with... it might help mellow all the hostility a bit - I thought rangers screwed up when they got their punishment and were relegated down the tiers. I thought they should have applied to join the English league and left Celtic in a one team competing with no one.

Wales and Scotland is totally different though, the Welsh clubs don't have historically rivalries based on a difference in religious belief and a civil war that killed thousands of people.

Plus we also don't have the immediate issue of the possibility of Welsh teams leaving the United Kingdom.

Personally I don't see the risk in taking them and I wouldn't sacrifice two English clubs for them anyway when it's getting harder and harder for the teams at the lowest end of our pyramid to survive.

sounds alright. not really sure why anyone would care either way, literally every scottish, welsh and northern irish team would be out in the first round before any of the prem teams even start the competition.

guess it would be good to watch celtic lose to someone like bristol rovers though.

For the umpteenth time a Scottish man wants Scottish teams to be allowed to play with the big boys.  Not going to happen.  Focus on making your own league more attractive and competitive.

I quite like the idea, however it’d be problematic in terms of additional games. More so for the Football League than as they already play 46 games.

So you’d have:

** England - 92 teams - 7 in Europe

** Scotland - 42 teams - 4 in Europe

** Wales - 32 teams - 4 in Europe

** N.Ireland - 36 - 4 in Europe

Total - 202 teams - 19 in Europe

That’s a lot of rounds of football!
