lcfcforever16 Posted 23 April 2020 Posted 23 April 2020 Do we believe we will get qualification into the champs league next season through games behind closed doors to end the season or will it be made on the new coefficient rule being talked about meaning we'd be in europa league which personally would be an outrage?
Guest MattP Posted 23 April 2020 Posted 23 April 2020 I don't think we'll have a Champions League next season anyway.

I hadn’t thought of that being an outcome that they’d allow to happen... If that does turn out to be the case I’ll be devastated! We deserve a CL place if we don’t get a shot at finishing the season. If the season is scrapped and there is a CL and we roll again as last time with this seasons clubs I think I’ll lose all faith in football! Still think it should all be played out - ship em all to St James Park and keep the teams tested and in isolation with each other and play the remaining nine games over the last month.

The Netherlands has shut down all sport until September at the earliest and almost every scientist going is telling us we have little chance of a vaccine until next year. I just dont envisage any sort of non essential global travel happening for some time.

davieG Posted 23 April 2020 Posted 23 April 2020 I think Ranier's idea was decent. Finish this season this year. Next season to start in Jan/Feb to finish prior to the Qatar WC then gradually put it back to normal over the next few years. I don't remember his detail for that.

Or even leave it as-is afterwards and switch to a calendar-year season as a default. Would fit in nicely with Qatar WC and would solve the issues of AFCON every other year. Plus more summer football (rather than sitting in the stands soaked through and/or freezing) would be ace. Regardless, I think any meaningful football (aside from tying up loose ends like the end of the season) is done for 2020.
NZ_Foxile Posted 23 April 2020 Posted 23 April 2020 From a fan perspective, I wouldn’t be bothered about the Champions League if I couldn’t travel to any of the matches.

Fair enough but I don’t get it myself. I don’t get to many away matches but still try to watch if possible even if it’s just highlights on MOTD but even if I couldn’t watch I’d still want us to be competing and doing well. Out of interest do you live in NZ now ?

Cancellation of the Munich Beer Festival yesterday was bad enough.

bovril Posted 23 April 2020 Posted 23 April 2020 I think Matt may be right. Domestic Leagues maybe but flying from one country to another just for a football match seems unlikely.

If we started in Jan 2021 then that would mean two calendar seasons before the World Cup. Maybe our first full season should be 2021-22 and for next season we should have a one-off breakdown into smaller divisions (maybe even regional) along with cup games. I also question whether we can have a Champions league next season

Surely it would just be the one season jan/feb to oct/nov then the Qatar world cup. And as @Xen said seasons could move to annular events.

We were already slated to have two and a half full seasons before the WC anyway - 2020/21, 2021/22 and the first half of 2022/23.
st albans fox Posted 23 April 2020 Posted 23 April 2020 Summer premier league football is crap once you drop the pace of the premier league it becomes garbage please no June/July premier league apart from completing this season which will be shite cos it’s behind closed doors anyway (if it’s played) I still think that if the premier league clubs actually want to finish the season that’s not very hard to achieve BUT I’ve been firmly of the opinion from day 1 that too many clubs actually want the season voided for self interested reasons for it to happen.

I think there are quite a number of players who have gone back to their families in their home countries during lockdown, so if our season was to resume but international travel was still (rightly) limited there may be an issue with teams not having access to their full squad for games. Not sure how they'd handle that...

But the seasonal weather is no longer seasonal, look out the window this is not 'normal' April weather. Besides having a mix of weather would be a good test of different styles of football. Football's changed anyway with billiard table like pitches, vastly different to the year round quagmire pitches of the past. euro 1996 often cited as one of the best international football events, I didn't hear anyone complaining about the weather.

There is no issue getting flights between big cities and U.K. training will not resume until mid may at the earliest and lockdowns around the world will be relaxing by then which will mean even more availability of flights.

Euros/world cups are way different to premier league in tempo watch Italian/Spanish games in may and August/September and let me know what you think about those that aren’t played in the evenings - walking pace most of the time it’s 75f today in the south. That’s not an issue. The 80+ June onwards is.

Anyway I guess it's down to personal opinion and will likely never happen.

Matt Ridley, the self-styled 'rational optimist' who was unusually (but rightly!) not very optimistic about what has now transpired re. Covid 19, has written an article in the Spectator about current treatment candidates, at the end of which he says; Altogether, I am now optimistic that within a month or two, one of the 30 or more therapies currently being tested is likely to prove effective and safe. Primed by Aids and ebola, we know where to look for chemicals that inhibit viruses, or prevent viruses replicating, in a way that we did not 20 years ago.
