Could equally apply to coefficient = sporting merit

Fair enough but I don’t get it myself. I don’t get to many away matches but still try to watch if possible even if it’s just highlights on MOTD but even if I couldn’t watch I’d still want us to be competing and doing well.

Out of interest do you live in NZ now ?

Of course I’d rather we were in it than not, for the Prestige and of course money that comes with being in the Champions League, and the increase in our attractiveness to good players. However, from my own point of view, my main motivation is getting to go on the away trips to see Leicester in Europe. I loved the experience of  2016-17.

No, I’m no longer a Foxile in New Zealand, but a Foxile elsewhere in the UK! I was living in NZ when I signed up for Foxestalk, but then couldn't change my user name.

Doesn't to me. Sporting merit sounds like allocation on sporting ability, not history or money

Nor be but I'm sure that could be used as an interpretation if they want too.

High coefficient = regularly performing at the top = Meritocracy. Just depends on how you choose to measure it.

The coefficient is literally based on historical sporting merit, so it could easily apply either way.

Reckon there'll be a legal challenge if we miss out though - given the amount of money involved and a strong claim that we would finish top4 were the season to end (the 3pts from Villa could prove very helpful here) I can't see us being skipped over without a fight.

Sadly I do not even think that is a questionable outlook

There's been an update, sporting merit of the 19/20 season.

If true, would be great news for us

Yes it was posted above and been debated on, Sporting merit will be whatever they decide it will be based on who they want in the  competition.

So how does points per game work? Surely that's what we play now . It would be better for 19 of the clubs if it were goals per game!

Just looked this up and it could well mean goals per game because othe sports, rugby american football have points instead of goals. Please let this happen!!

It just means that those teams that have played fewer games aren't disadvantaged.

Sorry @davieG think we're getting wires crossed.

Since the original tweet mentioning sporting merit, this has been set out by UEFA...

Not sure it will take place anyway but I imagine if it does then it will be reduced or structured differently, with knockout ties instead of groups and possibly "regionalised" so English clubs aren't heading to Russia and Eastern Europe but to France, Spain, Italy, Holland then merging in the New Year.

As you say, I think this it is all academic.

I can't visualise any kind of European football for next season.

In fact, I'll be grateful if indeed there's any football for next season

Or even leave it as-is afterwards and switch to a calendar-year season as a default. Would fit in nicely with Qatar WC and would solve the issues of AFCON every other year. Plus more summer football (rather than sitting in the stands soaked through and/or freezing) would be ace.

Regardless, I think any meaningful football (aside from tying up loose ends like the end of the season) is done for 2020.

This. Now old style tackling doesn't exist in the pro game it should be a summer sport.

Well if that info from uefa sticks then we are qualified and I have accordingly changed my kind re the integrity of the PL being protected - let’s finish it now :scarf:

points per game

we make CL and villa are relegated

plus Liverpool’s PL win will forever have an asterisk against it

The UEFA directive is ONLY for European club competition qualification. Relegation, promotion and Title winners is to be decided by each national league itself.

Sadly I agree re villa but liverpool would be asterisked champions and we probably would have a 22 team league for a potentially shortened season !!!!!!!  How does that work ??.

Arsenal and Spuds appealing to the FA that the Duckworth-Lewis method should used for determining UCL places as Leicester played more games in the rain then they did.
