I'm not sure how many, if any on here are aware of such facts in this weird time but in Premier League terms then now we're more or less where we were this time in the millennium year (and higher than we were during the title winning season at this present time) - soooo who's best? - Peter Taylor or Brendan Rodgers?! Rhetorical question of course....but the stats paint a very different story re money spent and how we felt at this time twenty years ago (without seeing the future) towards our then present day manager and the here and now. What would the squandered £5 million on Akinbiyi now be the equivalent amount in monetary terms, 20 years later for instance?? Anyway this is essentially just to mark a 20 years ago A/B observation! We've obviously moved on a lot since those 'false hope' days thanks to our owner(s)!

Under Peter Taylor, even when we were top it was clear to see we had shothoused our way to the top. It wasn’t pretty it wasn’t exciting and you could see it falling apart.

In 2000 very few players went for £5 million quid, I think at the time Alan Shearer was still the PL record at £15 million quid so you’d have to say wasting 5 on Ade is at very least similar to the money spent on Musa or Slimani, in terms of percentage of club revenue it’s possibly more.

Now we are young and starting something special, there it was clearly coming to an end. Heskey and Lennon moving on and being replaced with Wise and Akinbiyi is equivalent to selling Vardy and Ndidi and replacing them with Joelinton and Catermole.

Good comparison. But it’s also the same as Rodgers leaving and Ian Dowie taking over to manage them.

I’m pretty sure I bought a mug from the club shop with the league table printed on it showing us at the top of the table.

International break meant we were there for a couple of weeks.

I think it's often over looked but the fact we got £2.5m off Crystal Palace for Akinbiyi was possibly some of the best business ever by any football club.

It would be the equivalent of Newcastle managing to get £20m for Joelinton off another Premier League club.

Leicester City being top of the league back then was such an unusual event that that I cut the league table out of the newspaper to keep, and I carried the little square of paper in my wallet for several years, through the "dark days".

I concede that this makes me look a bit of a weirdo.  lol :scarf:

That's harsh on Catermole to be fair, comparing him to that scum.

It was a really big deal at the time. The football wasn't spectacular- 3 0-0 draws and a 1-0- but the start was very good, 16 points from 8 matches.

Well that's 12 more comments than I thought I'd get - thanks! Agree with everything that was said too. Little did we know at the time that we'd eventually slide to 13th by the May 2001 and crash out to lowly Wycombe at Filbo at the FAC QF stage ... let's hope this season doesn't go the same way after today's debacle! ... although highly unlikely!!
