Also regarding the pitch, I think it's a decent one for a test?

Rock hard on the first two days then the dryness starts to have an impact and it's a challenge to bat on. That's what you want rather than a road for 4 or 5 days. Brings all elements of the game into play - spin, seam, movement.

The toss was crucial. The silly and reckless batting, even when chances are slim (not impossible), is just self-inflicted.

Feels like a real end of an era with Stokes  going .

I thought he might at the end of the summer but not now .

Obviously been a class act for England over the years and be hard to replace.

Just a shame it’s all gone rather sour recently so maybe the right time for change but needs a different approach generally.

Class just completely tossing the test

Heard someone say that it’s the middle finger to some higher powers. If so, I’m torn between disappointed of the professionalism but proud of the camaraderie of it.

More will come out I’m sure and I’m also convinced Stokes has felt he’s had to walk before he was pushed, I very much feel at the minute it’s media trained answers. We’ve heard nothing from McCullum or Key and for what Stokes has done for English cricket they both should be out lauding him.

Obviously losing Broad & Anderson was massive. l dont know of any decent all-rounders who could step up & replace Stokes.

Root probably has a couple of years left, that will be another huge gap to fill.

I think England's difficult period could go on a bit longer yet unfortunately.

Stokes' departure leaves a huge gap both in terms of his role in the team and as a leader. Let's face it, there is no like-for-like replacement. With only a year to go until a home Ashes there isn't much time to get selection right.

For the balance of the team I would like to see Rehan come in as a bowling allrounder for home series, which would then allow us to play four quicks. Captaincy is a big dilemma - the only options in the current squad are Root (who doesn't want it and wasn't very good at it last time) and Brook (who doesn't seem like captain material right now). This would be a very un-England thing to do so it won't happen, but there is a case for Hameed to come in as a specialist captain and opener.

Something like this looks more balanced to me than the team we put out at the Oval:

Hameed

Duckett

Gay/Bethell

Root

Brook

Smith/Foulkes/Rew

Rehan

Atkinson

Robinson

Carse/Tongue

Archer

I mean there’s one that plays for Leicestershire, it’s just a shame that he likely doesn’t play golf.

There’s no way Hameed comes in. It’s a very clicky group and you’ve got to have be in and around the squad right now.

For me, it’ll be Brook. Been in the team long enough now and is already captaining the white ball, and could be the kick that he needs to grow up a bit.  The questions are, do they want a captain that does all three formats? But then the only other real option, is that it’s Root. But like you say, he’s had his time.

Agreed on both counts. Only way this closed shop approach to selection ends is if Key and Baz go. I find it sad the way Hameed has been written off, he's not even 30 yet.

True. Having a good all-rounder makes a side, especially at Test level much more balanced. England have had 3 world class ones in my lifetime, Botham, Flintoff & Stokes. Absolute gold dust.

The same could be said of Sibley. He's also 30. He's adapted his game, not as reliant on scoring just through the leg side as he was.

It's a bit left field, but is Duckett an option ? He seems like he's found a bit of form, he isn't being dropped anytime soon either.

I don’t think it's Brook's time just yet, doesn't sit right at the moment. Plus, as you said, l reckon it's too much to captain both white ball & Test sides.

When I was writing that post out, he was the only other one that I thought about that you could see it going to.

Obviously a bit biased but now is the time to get Rehan in as the all rounder and us to have 4 out and out seamers.

Rehan, absolutely should be in poll position. Sam Curran's time seems to have passed & l don't think many in county cricket are up to it (not that l follow the 4 day game too closely).

Our cricketers are thick as pig shit. NZ are everything we aren't and thoroughly deserve the series win.

Without a dodgy pitch at lord's it would be 3-0.

NZ have barely got any bowlers left. We at least would have had a chance of a chase - albeit a slim one - if we hadn't thrown away our wickets. It's infuriating.
