Thought we’d released Hughes he’s nearly 25 so really needs a permanent move maybe that’s Burton  after the loan or maybe can get himself a Championship club.

I think they gave him another year just because of his knee injury recovery, the club like to protect players like that.

I think we extended his contract by a year because he had a serious knee injury he was recovering from, probably on small wages anyway

Nice to see Will Alves playing quite abit despite being only 16 for sure one to watch.

Yes that's now 2 sub appearances and a start in the U23's. Please ty of others getting chances too like Terell Pennant and Wayna Marca. All good, what some of us have been asking for.

Really exciting little cameo from Will Alves in central midfield. Close control and turning experienced players for fun.

Nice touches by Pennant when he came on too.

Fleetwood were obviously too strong, were physical and we couldn't get handle their experienced attackers.

We tried to pass it around but wasn't good enough and kept losing it. Led to both first half goals. Never hid from playing out from the back though.

Out of starters, I thought Brunt did well and shown promise, Wakeling worked hard but was dominated by Johnson. Hulme struggled massively but seemed to playing central midfield on his own.

We ought to have been at the front of the queue for Kaide Gordon rather than Liverpool. Need to nick Derby and Forest's best academy players. He only went for about 500k rising to a million with add ones I think. Looks a star in the making.

I'm not sure we're in a position to spend that sort of money on youngsters just yet. Liverpool have the bonus of their reputation coming before a player's quality (i.e. they can sell them for a profit "because they're a Liverpool player"), I don't think we've got that at the moment but the positive changes made in the past few months and our ever growing rep will hopefully lead to that in the near-ish future.

500k on a 16/17 year old? Really?

We've just spent similar amounts on Ben Grist and Brad Young.

Exactly, that's quite a lot of money really if they end up being released on a free.

I heard the fees for Grist and Young were 3 figures but not even half of 500k initially, may be wrong though.

Myself and many have been calling for this for the last few years but if we want to compete in Europe year in, year out then your academy has to have serious investment. We have implemented a number of changes which many maybe longer term in the recruitment at young ages now we have the best facilities and are the best team in the Midlands but there also needs to be short term investment on recruiting some of the best 16-18 year old players. We have seen how difficult it is for a club like ours to have x 4 over 21 aged academy trained players in our squad for EL and its a real juggling act.

It is now a no go in recruiting under 18 players from overseas and the new transfer rules in general make it harder to pick up rough diamonds overseas so although it's always a gamble, investing several million a season in the best domestic youngsters is becoming a necessity if we want to stay amongst the big boys.

Brave moves have to be made and we've seen with many of the top teams, once they have the reputation for bringing through good young players, teams below them will happily snap them up for inflated fees given their stature in the game for the ones those clubs don't think will make it there. That then takes care of itself and is something we know we need to get better at and then the conveyor belt is continuous and the cost of buying academy players can be offset from selling some, see Kamal Sowah for a recent example.

How is Will Alves not in one of the England or Portugal youth squads? Madness

He's definitely spent some time with the Portugal squad. He may have spent some time with England's Youth too.

Yeah I thought I'd heard in the past he had, just surprised he isn't with one of them this week as England for example have the full raft of age groups from 16's through to 21's having training camps and games.
