Ah yes, Mahrez worked for us in that formation with that crop of players. It's a different team now and we play a different way. Yes, we could do we another creative player to give us options to unlock the defences that sit back against us (not a problem only we have btw) but it doesn't need to be a right winger. Maswanhise was a bright star last night. Early days, I know, but I was super impressed with him; both his skills and his confidence. Wouldn't it be great if out next 'sweet prince' was already within our ranks? ...he plays on the left..!!! Unless we are looking to offload Barnes next season and he can make the step up then great, but it does not help us now.

Watching him take on those 3 defenders is Rodgers wet dream. If he keeps this up and doesn't go on loan I expect to see him play in the first team. Especially if we dont buy a right sided attacker or to take the pressure off of Barnes with too much too soon. All depends if he has the right state of mind. Rodgers is a master at nurturing young players and not pushing them too soon. We'll know better by how he progresses through the preseason. Rooting hard for Tawanda hope he keeps his nose to the grind stone and doesn't back down. He has serious talent.
Chrysalis Posted 30 July 2021 Posted 30 July 2021 I was going through some old recordings the last couple of days which did include some recorded games from 2016 and 2017, yes we need a Mahrez replacement is what I conclude from watching those games. Having a great right winger will also improve things for Barnes as it makes it tougher for opposing teams choosing how to close us down.

ashfosse Posted 30 July 2021 Posted 30 July 2021 very happy with the recruitment so far. However i just think we lack some scary pace and penetration out wide if we want to play a 4231 at some stage. Especially if Barnes picks up another knock. If we get a good winger in, our squad is looking very good. WYS

Sharpe's Fox Posted 30 July 2021 Posted 30 July 2021 I don't think we even need anything special. Vardy, Barnes and Maddison is a very goal threat with options off the bench if necessary. Just someone who can get past players 1 on 1 and cross and commit defenders will do. Albrighton has never done that and is one dimensional and the less said about Perez the better.

Don't want us throwing the wallet at anyone, but someone young, pacey and with a bit of end product would be great. I trust our scouting and recruitment

He's right footed, he's played left wing or right wing for the U18's. It seems he's been developed under Rodgers on the left so far and is impressing so maybe that is his future position anyway. He's definitely right footed and not left.
Danno Posted 30 July 2021 Posted 30 July 2021 Absolutely. An extra 10 or so goals a season could be the different between top 5 and top 4. We missed a goal threat from the wing without Barnes, and there’s so many games where with an extra bit of quality we’d so easily have won, like Southampton for example. 1

Oh well thought I saw it somewhere. Spent the last 15 minutes trying to find my source for L footed and came up dry. Thanks for clearing that up.
An Sionnach Posted 30 July 2021 Posted 30 July 2021 The real question to me is , given Bailey, Pereira and Madueke are available , are we prepared to pay for a right winger? There is nothing in the bargain store so the club need to make a considerable investment.
Foxxed Posted 30 July 2021 Posted 30 July 2021 I don’t think we’ve got a midfielder or an attacking forward who can play on the right, so I’m skeptical about 3 3 4. Play Ian on the right up front? Play Ricardo out of position? Hope Maswanhise or Sowah quickly come up to speed? Rely on Albrighton and Perez despite needing, frankly, Champions League quality? Admittedly, maybe we’re not playing 334 but I have nfi what formation Bren has in mind.

Bluearmyfox28 Posted 4 August 2021 Posted 4 August 2021 I think it’s clear that we need a right winger, however I have a question for everyone that I am personally unsure on therefore intrigued on others opinion.... What are we looking for in a new right winger? Are we looking for someone who’s direct and similar to Barnes to create a wide attack similar to what Crystal Palace had in both Bolasie and Zaha? Or are we looking for a left footed right winger who’s creative that can cut in pass between the lines (similar to Daka’s goal against QPR) and create space for either Ricardo or Castagne down the flank?
