What's the worst hills folk run up?

Back when in my Birmingham based days, I did a lot of hill running by default due to being next to Cofton Park. One side of that I had a right harsh winding increase and then another 'wall' back into Longbridge.

Now being local - Enderby/Croft/Huncote have a couple which are energy zappers. The hill either side of Countesthorpe/Sth Wigston can take it out of you. The Seine Lane little rise coming off the Whistle Way is a pain in the arse. Never felt Croft is too much of a problem.

The worst hill I ever run up was Ashon Court Park Run in Bristol I think I mentioned on here after spending Good Friday drinking alcoholic apple juice. 2.5k up, 2.5k down.

When I was a lot younger it was Groby Rd/Anstey Lane - and the hill coming past County Hall is horrible too.

Mowmacre Hill. Hard enough to walk up the steep incline let alone run it.

As a local club runner from back in the day.  IF you want to have to walk, run the Huncote Hash post Christmas, almost all walk that up to the top of the hill.

The Kibworth 6 has Saddington & Gunley Hill, absolute killers, plenty of walking again even at the top end.

When I lived on the Matthews, I used to run from home to Beaumont Leys School, Anstey Lane up wasn't the easiest especially right outside the school, BUT it was lovely coming back!!!

We've got a couple of absolute killers in Barnsley, either long and never ending or just ridiculous incline that aren't as long but take everything out of you. As much as I hate them they've made me a better runner!

The one on Monday got me because I could see and hear some of our better runners finding it tough which mentally killed me!

Hate this. When I'm running on my own I nearly always have headphones on because the sound of my own huffing and puffing psychologically makes me feel more nakard than I actually am.

Can heartily recommend listening to Idles when running. Really gets you moving lol

Ok, looking for a bit of advice...

So I'm a big guy (18st), approaching my 40s and I've not done barely ANY exercise in probably over 10 years but in my youth was fairly active in sports.

I decided to get my sh!t together and start exercising/dieting. So I got a treadmill for the cupboard under the stairs and set about it.

The first couple of days I was hitting about 2.5mi in 20 minutes but have been pushing it harder every day to find my limit. The last few days I've topped out at 3mi in 20 minutes and tbh I didn't really think too much about it but today I done 3mi in 18 minutes so decided to have a wee look online to see if that was acceptable and it turns out 3mi is just shy of 5k and sub 20 minutes is a pretty good time so I'm heavily doubting if I'm doing something wrong because, as I've mentioned, I'm fat and surely that can't be right?

I set the treadmill at a speed and keep it there the whole time but alternate between walking very very quickly and running, is that cheating? I also hold onto the handles intermittently, especially near the end, this must be what's making it possible? Or am I just a natural athlete in disguise? Lol.

Best way would be to run outside and see what your real time is. What you said sounds pretty much impossible. You never know though lol

I think we definitely DO know! Lol.

I'm now certain that somethings off, I just don't know what. I'm guessing it must be holding onto the handles at times or possibly the calibration on the treadmill is out but it seems to be moving at a reasonable rate.

You're probably right about testing it outside but I'm still pretty self conscious with running in public. No one wants to see me jiggle and piss sweat.

Mate maybe run later in the evening or early but don’t worry about anyone else. I respect anyone out there trying to better themselves.

Doing a half marathon at Tatton Park on Sunday, it's a 2 lap course and pretty flat. Was tempted to go to Old Trafford afterwards but decided not to ruin my day!

Sorry mate but it really sounds like the calibration of the treadmill is wrong.

Don't be sorry pal. I never had any expectations of running like an experienced runner. I'm pushing myself to my limit every day, pissing sweat and losing weight and after every run I feel great (after 10 minutes of grasping to life) so that's all I really care about.

Don't worry about times and speed when starting out.

Also don't over do it and get injured.

All exercise is good mate regardless of whether it's recorded accurately

**** what other people think mate. You won't get any shit from other runners guaranteed and thus if you get stick from anyone else, ask yourself, are they running? Are they trying to better themselves? Probably not. It's easy to snigger, it ain't easy to put in the graft and do the running.

Thanks mate. Very much appreciated. I always planned to get out on the street at some point, I just wanted to make sure I could last a decent amount of time first so I don't end up walking after two minutes. That's why I've been putting in 20 minutes hard graft on the treadmill every day for the last 2 weeks. I don't plan on staying in the Harry Potter cupboard forever.

I’m not a fan of the city of three waters in Whitwick.

I echo what the others have said mate great work on getting it done, there's a lot of people who don't for one reason or another so the fact you are gets huge respect because we all know how hard it is. Running for time is definitely one way of doing it over a certain distance, and to be honest it doesn't matter if you run a bit then walk a bit or walk, jog, run and mix it up. For years I just did 5ks and got ok fit, since varying it up to do long slow runs, some quicker runs with walks in, and some faster paced 5k runs my fitness has improved massively and the weight has flown off. Keep it up mate 💪

I echo this @Scotch

I’m in my 40s and when I started running during Covid I was 18 stone.

A decent pair of shoes, some good headphones and Spotify were the only three things I needed. That and a will to get out of the door. As that’s the hardest part.

I managed to drop to 14 stone from just doing couch to 5k. I’m not quick, more so due to the fact everything I’ve broken playing sport hurts when I run.

I found myself doing what I perceived to be major milestones when I restarted.

First 5 minute run, 10 minutes, 20

minutes etc. the first 5k was brilliant. I then got into chasing the time down once I’d finished. My first 5k was 40 minutes from memory!

For me, it was always about getting the steps in, to burn the calories, to drop the weight.

…… I also cut out chocolate and a few other things (which helped) lol
