Just did a quick Google. I think the phrase should be "as rare as hen's teeth".

As rare as hen's eggs isn't really a thing...

It is for one of my neighbours. I think his hens are about ready for a roast lol

They would have narrowly missed out with a draw, but Doncaster’s goal took the title away from Bournemouth.

Yeah so if Brentford had scored they'd of gone up over Doncaster. Doncaster scoring made no difference for Brentford in terms of the final table had they lost or drawn but the penalty miss was significant.

I always feel like Sky lead you to believe this amounted to Watford's promotion or something the way they constantly reshow it and retell the story. I always did find it hilarious they got beat in the final because you just knew that didn't play into the script Sky had written.

It really is one of the moments you'd show any football fan in 50 years and say look lad this happened to us just before THAT title.

Seeing the mural in the underpass made me take stock of what we've acheived in recent times.

It's an impressive piece of art, no doubt. Christ only knows some of the stabbier parts of Leicester could do with a similar lick of paint.lol

But you look at our two trajectories since. We've gone on to acheive absolutely unbelieveable things, while Deeney Day seems to remain Watford's crowning acheivement, even despite them actually being promoted more than once since. To be walking home past that, happy but underwhelmed at a season where finishing top-half feels like a failure, is in stark contrast to a club for whom the height of ambition seems to be to make up the numbers every other year.

I'm not pretending Deeney Day wasn't an incredible moment in football history, but it's the fact that it ultimately meant nothing that makes me laugh at how much it's still lauded. People brush over the fact that they then went on to get sunk by a penalty from a geriatric geezer, who went on to join us, slippers, cardie, Zimmer frame and all, and help us absolutely blast the league the year after alongside a squirrel-chasing scouser, a nobody from Sheffield and your pot-bellied Dad called up to the squad after winning a raffle at the pub. Imagine if Knockeart's goal against Forest was our peak memory as Foxes' fans! Could well have been in a different timeline, so I'll always be grateful of what we actually acheived in Deeny Day's aftermath. For that reason, I've grown to quite enjoy having it brought up every year, as horrific as it was to live through at the time.

It's worth reflecting on it now and again, because it truly was the beginning of the mad era we've lived through for the past decade.  :scarf:

Yes Watford losing the final killed that story stone dead. I can look at that  loss to them with a sense of so over it. What followed is what mattered in the long term

I love the playoffs but unfortunately this time of year you get reminded of that moment, it seems to be on a loop on sky sports news.

I remember watching it and once he missed you just could sense something was about to happen.

But look what we achieved after that, may not have happened if we had scored that penalty.

Honestly I quite enjoy watching the Deeney moment back, as gutting as it was at the time, it was far better for us to lose that game in retrospect and that game was one of the big makings of us and it’s a pretty crazy and enjoyable moment now I can watch it knowing it was actually good for us.

The entire 2nd half of that season was pretty formative I think. We were 2nd and starting to pull away and look more and more likely to secure automatic promotion at the beginning of February. Then our heads went and we completely bottled it after we went on that horrendous run where we won 3 in 17 or something and collapsed down to 8th going into the final day where Knockaert scored in injury time vs Forest to make the play-offs.

Think someone, maybe King? Said they talked about that season in both the Championship and PL title campaigns and how they felt and learnt from them bottling promotion that season.

Drinkwater and Vardy who were largely slated that season also came back and were brilliant the following season and our best 2 players. We also got to sign Mahrez the following season who I really don’t think would be the kind of player we’d have been after if we were in the PL that season.

100% agree that if we went up that season we’d have ended up like QPR or something. Vardy or Drinkwater wouldn’t have been the same players, we never would’ve signed Mahrez and the likes of Morgan, Schmeichel and King would never have learnt the lessons of how not to bottle a title and helped show the leadership qualities to the squad to not let our heads drop like in 12/13.

Watford conceded a last minute goal to Leeds and Cardiff scored a last minute penalty against Hull in the battle for automatics on the final day that season

Obviously we scored in the last minute on the final day too
