A guy I work with went to Indian Shores last week on holiday. Has got evacuated from there to Orlando and is having to get evacuated again because of Ian it seems.

My other half is in Orlando at the moment with friends. This time yesterday it was forecast to go right over them but it looks like the worst of it has missed, it's also been declassified significantly.

So it'll depend on flooding. Orlando's got about seven bzillion lakes and rivers all over the place so I guess wait and see. I got sent a bunch of videos a couple of hours ago and it didn't look too severe to be fair (relative, obviously.)

Have been in Orlando all week. It’s a tropical storm at this point but the worry is the blow back as Ian moves off to the east coast. Lots of water and wind but no power outage or flood for us, luckily.

It's returning to hurricane status

"Tropical Storm Ian is expected to become a hurricane again later on Thursday before making landfall for the second time on Friday, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) has said in its latest advisory."

Just in time to loop back into South Carolina. Ouch

Looking the posts above I wonder how BBC Radio managed to interview 1 woman in Florida who said "it was scary... My tree got blown down and I lost most of my fence". :crylaugh:

So I’m in Leicester right now but fly back to North Carolina tomorrow! Stopping off  at Atlanta, Georgia first and then on to Charlotte, NC around 4pm East coast time. As of right now the flight is still on but there’s no way we will be flying into either tomorrow. Best case scenario is we get diverted to somewhere safe, I’d imagine.chances are the flight gets cancelled for a day but then we will be facing congestion as the flight for the next day already looks rammed full. Fun times.

... context?

In any case, the guy still is guaranteeing deSantis all the help that he needs rather than telling him to bugger off like the way his predecessor told political opponents hit by acts of nature to do.

From the comments it was from last year and a general plea to get more people vaccinated. They are not directly related, but I would hate to have covid and be relying on a ventilator when a hurricane hits and knocks out all the power.

Ah, so MAGAt hit job? Can't say I'm surprised.

Perhaps the ones that come up with this bollocks might want to look closer at their own "side" and their propensity for policy that both allows events like these to become stronger and more frequent and also inadequately protects people when they do because, you know, "every man an island" and all that.

If only the hospitals were obligated by law to have back up generators or something like that…

Well let's see. One of these is urging communities to vaccinate a year ago, during a viral pandemic against a highly contagious respiratory disease.

The other, after being in office for only two and a half weeks and all within the space of a farcical 'fiscal event' lasting a few hours, managed to plunge the pound to a record low against the dollar; introduce tax cuts for the wealthy and announce spending increases exceeding those implemented during the pandemic hurling government debt on an unsustainable trajectory; cause turmoil in the UK housing market resulting 935 out of 3,596 mortgage products being pulled from the market overnight; decimate the gilt/bond market threatening to obliterate entire pension funds in the process, prompting emergency intervention from The Bank of England on the grounds of  “serious material risk to UK financial stability”.

Righto.

For sure, I'm not saying you would die, but a hurricane is not going to help anyone get better. If you are seriously ill during a hurricane it is going to make things difficult, whether you have to evacuate, or deliveries can't get through or doctors are unable to get to the hospital. So take the vaccine, don't get covid and don't clog up the health system with a preventable disease when there is a massive hurricane.

It was a little attempt at humour.. there is actually a  federal law saying all hospitals must have a back up generator  for exactly these reasons.

however the major issue that concerns the point you are making is those that are on oxygen at home for various lung / cancer long term oxygen needs- they usually get a a machine that pulls oxygen out of the air and bottles it themselves instead of having a large supply of oxygen canisters at home- they’ll have 2-3 canisters and bottle it up themselves. Those are the people vulnerable to a power cut- same goes for those in a nursing home. No power for medical or heating needs in a storm can be bad for the elderly at home.

Not to downplay it because there has been a lot of devastation, but we just rode it out for a couple of days. Caught up on all tv, ate snacks and made use of our family as baby sitters :D

The media love to sensationalise and there’s a lot of previous for overdoing weather reports to install fear

You can't really overstate a Category 4 hurricane at landfall though and as you said, you 'rode out' a tropical storm not the full force of a hurricane.

The media do indeed love to overplay meteorological events, the red tops do it over here with absurd and nonsensical weekly predictions of heatwaves or arctic blasts without any reference of deference to actual forecasts  - not to instill fear, but because weather sells.

Not sure you read the previous posts mate but I am in Orlando where it was classified as a tropical storm… where they were trying to make it into a hurricane just to scare people.

Tampa Bay and the west side is a completely different story. Definitely not downplaying what they went through!

read the previous posts chap and there are people who have died in Florida… just because it hasn’t effected you quite so badly is a good thing… the storm did change trajectory slightly meaning it didn’t quite hit Florida so powerfully but I wouldn’t  call that scaremongering by the media… besides, I wouldn’t call it the media that was biggish it up.. they really go by what the national weather service go by and they were the ones predicting the catastrophic damage, not the media..

anyway the important thing is of course is that it’s great news you are all your family are safe!
