Do you have any involvement in/knowledge of keeping heat out through your line of work?

Obviously the main issue is like you say, how houses are built. We are currently having an extension and at one point, one of the builders mentioned something that can be done as part of the plaster to keep it a bit cooler. And I have seen things about what you can do with the glass in the windows. But I am sceptical about whether anything would actually work.

No absolutely none mate 😂

I just had air con fitted in the main bedroom back in May. It was an absolute god send. Got too cold at times 😂

Fair. I know you’re a gas engineer so just wondered if you knew anything from the trade.

Air con is something we have considered but we did get through this summer relatively comfortably so we are ok for now. You just got one unit? What sort of cost and disruption is it?

Nope, not heard of anything.

Literally most the gas lads I know are jumping onto F Gas now. I’m trying to push our firm into it too. It’s definitely the future.

Ive just got one unit, a Samsung 3kw

Must’ve been easiest install the guys ever done- unit inside, external one directly outside. Condense onto the gravel. Power off the outdoor electrical socket ring main

£1250 all in

Wish now I’d gone for a multi fit unit so I could have had my living room done at a lower cost further down the line.

A different guy quoted the same price but for a larger indoor unit (may have been a 7kw) , which then required an electrician getting a supply all the way to the fuse board

Back in June time, you couldn’t buy a unit here until November, such was the demand.

Either way, our houses are too hot in the summer, because they’re built for the winter.

It's the same process, stopping heat transfer through the fabric. It's worked in our house.

Negligible I’d say

Means I’m less likely to be forced to turn to other fuel sources at great expense to myself in the future though

Applogies on the late reply. Was just commissioning a 50kw natural gas boiler. Luckily the big house heated up really quickly so I could get home faster

Gas is the most expensive part of our energy mix. Privatised energy companies are allowed to charge for all energy based on the most expensive part of their mix. Gas. Without it prices would drastically fall.

What ever the elite decide, the war in russia and ukraine was the reason they went so high absolutely bullshit imo

Keep the poor poorer simple as that

The elite are the oil and gas billionaires that want to keep the world addicted to their wares.

Clean energy systems give ordinary people that opportunity to own their own means of energy production and storage.

Forgive me if I’m wrong- don’t you live in Spain?

Yes. With no gas. That doesn't answer my question though?

In any case, this discussion is mostly moot.

The laws of thermodynamics and their consequences are as inflexible as the laws of gravity - or any other law of physics.

So humanity either gets a grip on this problem or the increased temperature resulting in increased drought, flooding and other extreme events will cause shortages of vital resources (most notably staple crops and potable water) that will result in both warfare over those resources and a humanitarian disaster unlike this world has ever seen. And that will affect every single human being on this planet.

That's not a hypothetical. That's simply the future. It's not a perhaps, it's a will - and the only question will be if it's merely horrifying or absolutely catastrophic.

If people are OK with that future because they feel they can't or won't do anything about it, then that's between them and their consciences (or lack thereof). But thinking it won't happen is in the same degree of denial of thinking the laws of gravity won't apply to you if you step off a high building.

Unfortunately governments control our future and there's very little we can do to influence the trajectory we are on.

Stopping voting for climate change denialism would be a start.

Can’t quote the post from Leics Mac but that’s a great idea. All these morons who don’t believe in climate change will easily be convinced that gravity is a left wing plot designed by Ed Milliband to steal their children. Gravity is keeping your child stuck to earth. Without it they could fly to stars. Vote Tommy Robinson to end the gravity hoax

You live in a democracy. You can absolutely engage in and influence the system. You should be bombarding your MP for a start

Too many I know just say "its the government's problem" then take 3 abroad holidays a year. Just one of them puts you miles over a sustainable individual limit.

We all have to be responsible.

That's pretty grim reading from a country that has some of the highest solar potential in the world. Their coal exports to China are rising up fast as well which is probably why the new mines are opening.

If they were ran by the Tories, their 2040 mix would have been in place by 2020.

The charts make more sense if you split thermal coal used for power generation and coking or metallurgical coal used for steelmaking.  China buys the second from Australia as it is very high quality and more efficient, and while they continue to make steel that way it is better for the environment than their local alternatives.  On the thermal coal side, Australia was slow to move away from coal fired power stations, and is taking time to replace them, even with Gas - which will certainly be required while other technologies come into play, despite some state governments avoiding the political hot potato at the moment.

Although I understand your sentiment

Why should any normal citizen sacrifice their freedom to holiday anywhere in the world two or three times a year when the rich and famous, wealthy business people, the elites, are jumping on private jets, helicopters, first class boarding, 10? 15? 20? 100? Times a year? Regardless to whether they could be business trips that could be done by zoom!

but oh no, it’s the Little People that can barely get to travel once or twice in a year that have to watch the Air miles

As has been said before, mass transportation is a part of carbon emissions, but a much smaller one compared to energy generation.

By far the best thing any "ordinary" person can do on this matter is vote and lobby for changes in energy generation, both in the UK and worldwide, that result in reduced carbon emissions.

Your nations energy policy means much more to the future than the amount of times you get on a plane every year.

Well if there's an individual limit then that should be imposed globally by law.

Individual responsibility doesn't exist to that level, it's not human nature.

It's not in some humans' nature, certainly
