If you know what this is… your shins probably still remember!
The classic school gym bench — part obstacle, part balance beam, part seating for a very awkward PE lesson. Whether you were doing forward rolls across it, balancing for dear life, or just trying not to fall off during circuit training, this old wooden beast holds memories for every school kid of a certain era.

Finished school in 2014 and these were still a thing

Flipped over onto their sides, we used them as 'goals' in 5-a-side football. You had to actually hit the bench to score a goal, so we quickly mastered the art of shooting low..

Could also be used for various exercises during circuit training

They still do it, but it's in colour now.

I remember a type of duffle coat which included gloves stitched onto elastic. Once kids discovered that if you pull one arm up you smack yourself in the face with the other it was carnage in the playground!

Woodwork and Metalwork classes

We had these at Gateway Grammar School. I've still got a wooden box with a hinged lid and lined with felt that I made for my late dad to keep his LP records in and a small wooden box for my late mum to put her trinkets in. As well as some "sculptures" we had to design and make in metalwork class.

These were the classes I enjoyed the most. Forget maths and English.

I was absolutely rubbish at school particularly woodwork and metalwork. In fact only subject I enjoyed was history.

The only thing I've got from my woodworking class is a big scar on my right index finger. lol

We had an actual forge in the metalwork classroom where we would learn how to heat metal and then hammer it into various shapes.

Also planishing metal bowls was another thing we did.

PLANISHED / HAMMERED FINISH (HAND FINISH)

Jumpers for goalposts?

People scavenging around scrap heaps and climbing cars stacked 3-4 high to get that part they need for their car.

"Have you got an indicator stalk for a Ford Escort?"

"Yeah, that blue one on top of the brown Volvo and under the white Toyota, but there's a few more scattered round."
