ON THE 5th DECEMBER 1973
During the petrol shortage brought about by Oil Crisis*, the government imposed a 50 mph speed limit on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways to save fuel.
This followed the previously issued Petrol Ration Books issued in November. Nobody thankfully back then ever needed to use them.
*The 1973 oil crisis from October to March 1974, was caused by an OAPEC oil embargo imposed in retaliation for U.S. support of Israel during the Yom Kippur War, combined with a broader decision by OPEC to sharply raise oil prices. The embargo banned petroleum exports to the United States and other pro-Israel nations, and both OAPEC and OPEC implemented production cuts, which sent oil prices skyrocketing. 🛡️

CDs or from earlier, flimsy plastic singles, on the covers of music mags

I remember the promo floppy 45 rpm singles on music mags. When I was a club DJ I used to get promo singles/12 inch "specials" that were mostly crap.

The cause of everything that followed in the 70s btw. Not 'socialism'.

MFI are coming back in 2026. I've still got some MFI furniture going strong,  I

Googled when they closed and the first story was in relation to MFI coming back.

Good ole V sign, two fingered salute.

Seems to have been replaced with the 'Up yours' middle finger and w4nker gesture.

Nah, still still plenty of 'V's from us older ones ... especially directed towards Rudkin and Co.

It does look like a stadium — and you’re right to wonder 🇬🇧
What you’re seeing is almost certainly a football ground turnstile, likely from late-1960s or 1970s Britain.
The giveaway is painted right above the doorway:
“JUNIORS 20p.”
That was the price for kids. Loose change in a pocket. No tickets in advance. You queued up, paid at the door, and disappeared straight into the terraces.
The entrance is narrow, brick-built, and cramped — exactly how old football grounds were designed. Fans pressed in shoulder to shoulder. Kids mixed freely with adults. No barriers. No stewards in bright jackets. Just the crush of bodies and the smell of damp coats.
And that’s the thing — this isn’t one famous stadium.
Entrances like this existed all over Britain.
North, South, Midlands, London. Big clubs. Small clubs.
That’s why the image feels so familiar.
It isn’t about where it was taken.
It’s about when.
A time when football was cheap, local, and raw.
When kids lined up with men twice their size.
When 20p bought you noise, cold concrete, and memories that lasted a lifetime.
Before football became business —
it was ritual.

When I started going regularly 1973-74 season it was 20p for juniors in the pop & 25p in the kop. Still had money over for a programme & a doughnut from my 50p pocket money.

Less the fault of stadium design, more the fault of drunken Weegees.

Honestly don't know enough about it to say. But still of all the things to be nostalgic about old football, I don't think cramped, death trap stadia is one of them.

I don't think it's been on FTA channels for a long time but remember Trans world sport being a stable diet via Channel 4 on Saturday mornings at a time when there wasn't the Internet or instant information on as the article says niche sports and up and coming stars of the future.
