FA Cup replays will be scrapped from the first round onwards in the 2024-25 competition.

Too many games for the big boys to play but pre season tours all over the world.

Was listening to David Ornstein the other day who expects the next step will be for the Community Shield to be played abroad as a showcase in places like Saudi.

It's heading that way. Spain and France already do it.

And what my thoughts are is that it'll be worth to the PL a lot more than the 33 million extra they are giving the FA for grass roots football in exchange for the soul of the FA Cup. Or have I got that wrong - will the FA get money from that?

Absolutely no idea but you just know money will be at the centre of it.

The FA Cup has been tinpot for years now with with so many sides fielding second string teams unless they get to the final and semi finals

It’s lost its magic for me together with many other things about what football has become

It’s probably overkill these changes but replays in most cases are crap.

They’re romanticised too much because people think of a minnow taking a much bigger side to a replay but that essentially never happens.

The median replay is a crap game between two clubs in the same division, nobody wants those. Maybe no replays between teams in the same division would make better sense.

Underdogs have a much better chance of going through over one game too.

The absolutely shit thing is that it’s been done for the terrible revamped UEFA competition format.

I'm old enough to remember when the League Cup was referred to as the "Mickey Mouse Cup" in the 90s because the big clubs never took it seriously and just played the kids.

Non "big club" winners in the 80s and 90s were: Norwich, Oxford, Luton, Forest (twice), Wednesday, Villa (twice), and Leicester City .

Since 2000 however, when the "Big Six" money snowballed and their squads and youth academies expanded, the non "big six" winners have been: Leicester City (2000), Blackburn (2002), Boro (2004), Birmingham (2011), and Swansea (2013)

In the last 24 years Liverpool have won it 5 times, Manchester United 5, Manchester City 6 times (in the space of 8 years and 4 in a row), Chelsea 3 times and Tottenham once.

Non "big six" finalists in that time were: Tranmere (2000), Birmingham (2001), Bolton (2004), Wigan (2006), Villa (2010, 2020), Cardiff (2012), Bradford (2013), Sunderland (2014) and Southampton (2016). Newcastle were finalists in 2023 but that was after their acquisition by the Saudi state.

My point is, these "big clubs" fixtures are only congested because they specifically chose to dominate these competitions.

It just occurred to me that PL have somehow fought for this ruling to occur in the first two rounds. Rounds they're not even involved in lol lol

No, see man city wouldn't have lost on penalties v real Madrid if Doncaster didn't have to go to a replay to make the second round rather than accrington Stanley
