Shocking fact, that

Im not sure its down to poor quality of English managers or down lack of English managers being given enough opportunities to manage at the big clubs.

Bit of both? You could argue Newcastle weren't a "big" club when Howe took over. Moyes (Scottish, admittedly) got United and West Ham. Ironically won a trophy with the little club.

Who else is British and been given a monied club? They all want to have instant success and bring in an overseas manager who has achieved it but they don't think "hang on, how did they do it over there?"

In the lower leagues its no problem quite a few have lead teams to the premier league but once in the top flight they are on borrowed time.

Do we think fans are starting to take cups more seriously? Talking to Newcastle supporters this weekend reminds me of West Ham fans in 2023. I think the chance to win something trumps success in the Premier League, even top four. I'm so lucky to have seen Leicester win four trophies in my lifetime and I would not swap that for any kind of long term stability even if it involved challenging for Champions League qualification.

Yes. Probably started in 2021 with our FA Cup. Hopefully that will have a new winner.

I'd not swap trophies for anything. I was lucky enough to go to the FA Cup final in 2021 and I want to do that day over again but even more so with a full capacity Wembley.

I always want us to go full strength in both competitions, FA Cup and League Cup, and the talk of "Premier League survival" this season ahead of trophy success was awful. I don't know what's happened to this country, perhaps to much influence from Sky who like to tell everyone the Premier League is everything.

Imagine Wigan 'focusing on the league' in 2013, only to go down anyway without having that moment to cherish forever.

Cups should be a priority, they're much more fun than the standard run of the mill league game.

Talk to us and West Ham fans now tho, and Newcastle fans in 3 years time if nothing else is won. Will all be forgotten.

I seriously doubt West Ham fans have forgotten winning the Conference League considering it's their only trophy in nearly half a century.

True cups and Silverware are remembered more than "do you remember when Watford finishing 10th" silverware is there forever.

Yes. I remember when we won the League Cup in 1997 after zilch for ages how marvellous it was. Repeated in 2000 and I thought I was lucky not dreaming we could achieve even more. Bearing in mind how big football is in the north east and that in the 50s Newcastle were regular cup winners it is staggering how long it has taken them to win something.  Qualifying for Champions League or Europa etc is fine and dandy but to see your team with a major trophy can't be beaten

Bet the Magpies win not so popular in Sunderland. I remember once going to buy a rail ticket at Newcastle station to go to Sunderland. "2 singles to Sunderland please" reply from lady in ticket office " If you must"

I'm sorry but you are kidding me? West Ham had to wait about 40 years for a trophy, Newcastle 70. Granted they'll be miffed if they don't progress as clubs in the next 5 years but the cup wins will be remembered fondly.

The trophies more than anything sustain you during the barren years. When we were terrible in the 2000s the league cup wins were always what I looked back on most misty-eyed, especially 1997 and Walsh walking up the steps at Hillsborough. Some of the famous Premier League wins against e.g. Liverpool, Man United and Tottenham were great, but it's not quite the same.

Yes. Things look bleak now but when we were rubbish back before the League Cup wins there was precious little to look back fondly on.

Of course it won't be popular considering they hate each other. One of the best derbies in the Country.

My mum's family all came from South Tyneside. I remember as a boy hearing on the radio that Newcastle had been promoted back to The First Division in 1965. I was surprised when my Uncle expressed his disgust. Only then did I learn he was a Sunderland fan. Years later he somehow was at a Newcastle v Leicester game which we won. He said he was the only bloke risking a cheer when we scored as he was most definitely in the home end.

Interesting turn of events in November 2021, they were bottom of the premier league likely heading down. Take over happens, Newcastle stay up. 2023 the club reach the champions league. 2025 win the league cup for first time in their history. Owners there certainly got it right with their change of management and player recruitment without even breaking the bank.

One thing Newcastle mustn't do is let there season dip after this trophy success. We've seen other clubs win a cup mid-season and allowed their form to drift away. Birmingham city won the league cup in 2011 they were 16th in the Premier league, come may they were relegated. Only picked up i think six points between then and the end of the season.

Again, as stated, speak to any West Ham or Leicester fan now and absolutely none of them will be saying ‘it’s all ok because we won a trophy.’ I have only heard city fans being shot down for suggesting they are ok with our current situation because we won some trophies.

Of course we’ll all never forget the day out but I bet the average net happiness of Fulham, Brighton, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace fans is higher than West Ham’s over the last 10 years.

I think some people have bought too much into the "we were in League 1 once" meme. Nobody is saying it makes it ok, just that for a lot of fans the highs of winning a trophy are far above any kind of Premier League stability as experienced by the clubs you've listed. Each to their own but the cup finals we've won are not just "days out" for me. It's the whole point of professional sport - to win something.

I also strongly disagree with your last sentence and I reckon a few Palace fans would too.

Yeh i agree with you. I still go to city and dare say it, enjoy it too. I genuinely completed it in 2016 so now it’s just a pass time and not worthy of getting all worked up about.

But that’s not the mass market view as proven at matches. Everyone is so miserable. We wanted ranieri out a few months after we lifted the trophy lol. The iron forced moyes out a year after they were ‘soooooo haaaappppy’ about the conference league. I bet this time next year Howe will be getting panned by the Geordies and not one of them will be talking about yday. Football fans want it all and are evidentially not happy with a trophy lift now n then
