Yeah, but they're "bad guys" and the US, even when headed up by Trump, are "good guys", so it's all OK... right?

I'm trying to decide whether enshittification of the democratic process by bigoted social media dudebros and the consequences of it or Danny Ward currently merit more personal stress right now.

Danny Ward.

Danny Ward.

Well, given Stolarcyk seems to now rightfully be the choice after Mads, I'm inclined to think, as much as a liability Danny Ward is, that this is no longer the case.

Nice to see Southgate’s efforts rewarded with a knighthood . For services to failure and under achievement presumably

:dunno: Bobby Robson and Walter Winterbottom got dubbed for far less achievement on paper, tbh.

I know there can be an argument about the "strength of the squad" by comparison and what other managers might have done and that can go on til the cows come home as it is entirely subjective and conjecture, which is why I personally tend to just rely on the facts on paper - which are that the man is the second most successful England manager after Ramsey.

If he doesn't deserve one (and there's a legit argument there), then no one but Ramsey did. But as others did get one...

Bobby managed for nearly 40 years, won trophies Ipswich UEFA Cup Ffs), and was a true football man loved by all. Not even close to compare the two.

Then I guess it comes down to what metric you're measuring by - purely as England manager or a whole career (I figured the original comment was focusing on the former, seeing as most people commenting on the topic do for obvious reasons).

And again, that's subjective.

I do find there's a bit of nostalgia filter that finds its way into this discussion too, tbh.

It's not subjective, look at the respective honours for each.

Don't get me wrong, handing out gongs to sports people for the grand achievement of simply doing their extremely lucrative job bothers me far more than the "who deserves it" debate. None of them should get them (Sir Bobby being the exception... ).

That's a fair point second paragraph.

So, you can afford £10.4 million's worth of jewellery and fancy bags - but you can't afford a decent security set-up or keep road facing windows closed?

It's just odd.

It was an "Instagram influencer and socialite" apparently  whatever that is...so probably  should have influenced a better security system!!

Shouldn't laugh though!!

I am far from a fan of Southgate, he wasted the ultimate resources at our disposal at a time when the premier league had the best coaches in their prime handing us players who are proven winners. He's proven himself to be an average football coach, which is no slight, but he is clearly far from elite.

At the same time he did entirely change the culture of the national team, he took the whole country on the ride, built huge engagement and somehow handled the media too. He's an excellent leader. It's a deserved award I think, glad for him.

That ride having all the excitement of a miniature railway on the North Norfolk coast.

Haha I would agree, but I'm a football fan. The country was awash in 9-5 compliance drones in replica England shirts singing that atomic kitten song and drinking cans of G&T during tournaments. All of them thinking Pickford is a world class keeper. World cup 2018 the second best time of their lives after the crown season 3. Southgate built that. Put respect on his name.

Maddison and Chilwell furiously searching for this bag....

Yuck though, that can only be a Hermes design and I bet they sell it for £1000+

The game really is gone

Robson managed nearly 1500 games across several countries and was an icon of the game.

Southgate wears a waistcoat. They are in different leagues in terms of services to sport.

It would be a sad day where I'd miss the opportunity to go on such a railway.

England matches though? They have been dull for years.

Right, but see above.

In all honesty though, I expected more negative commentary about Sadiq Khan getting a gong than Southgate considering the mess he apparently made of London under his watch.

Not sure I can deal with people in the provinces telling me actually London's improved massively in the seven years I've lived here.

I'm not a fan.

But he was elected 3 times. Impossible to argue against that IMO.

Also... did anything ever come of the sabotage of Nordstream?

Pretty sure the consensus is that Nordstream was blown up by Ukrainians as a way of stopping German reliance on Russian gas. Nothing will come out properly until after the war for obvious reasons.

I see Southgate was upgraded from an OBE to a knighthood. If he did deserve anything a CBE should have sufficed. Higher than OBE but below knighthood

Personally I've got no horse in that particular race, but I know a lot of folks do.
