And Rubio pretty much stating that runaway nationalism rather than international cooperation is the way to solve the world's current problems.

Quelle surprise.

US President-elect Donald Trump will be consulted on the UK's deal to hand over the Chagos Islands, where there is a joint US-UK military base, to Mauritius.

The UK announced in October it would cede sovereignty of the archipelago in the Indian Ocean, but maintain control of the base on the largest island Diego Garcia under a 99-year lease.

Efforts to get the treaty signed before Trump's inauguration on Monday had been made, the BBC understands, and it had been expected the Mauritian cabinet would approve the deal on Wednesday.

The deal had already been greenlit by the Biden administration but the UK prime minister's office on Wednesday said the incoming Trump government would now "consider" the deal.

I would have thought that keeping hold of the CIA tortu-, sorry, "black site" would be enough for the US and their Conservative/Reform sycophants. Evidently the idea of empire dies hard.

Let's hope he torpedoes it because it looks like an absolutely diabolical deal even by the UK government's very low standards

He'll torpedo it, not for the right reasons but, because as is his wont, he won't give up anything that's "his" easily. Even when it's really not.

I think it’s possibly that but more likely that he’s assured BN that Iran won’t be allowed to develop a nuclear bomb that can be launched at Israel. (Either by allowing Israel to do as they need there or via USA becoming directly involved in effective sanctions).
that also works for Saudi btw

But Iran were basically defeated a few months back, they’ve lost at every single turn. Yet Israel were still bombing, I think there’s more to it. I think Netanyahu thought Trump would give him a free hand and he’s clearly said no. Add in the fact that the gulf states trust Trump more on the basis that he sees them as opportunities rather than inhumane theocracies.

The Singer Linda Nolan has died.

Didn't she have cancer at some point, or was that one of her sisters?

The Nolan's were one of those bubble-gum groups that were easily likeable, albeit a bit bland.

The news story is sad and I know I shouldn't post this but:

Blimey, The Cheeky Girls have let themselves go.

Two twin sisters wearing pink tops, either side of a man in a white top.

Am trying not to laugh..

-

Am genuinely concerned that it could be duo suicide.

Read somewhere that they left their property by cancelling some tenant agreement and then left the next day, and not informing their family about it.

Hegseth is pretty much exactly as you'd expect a Trump appointee to be.

Oh, and he's an antivaxxer too.

And worryingly, he is clearly a hawk as well as an arrogant misogynist. Who knows what policies he'll propose/support in terms of military action?

As you say a clear Trump appointee.

Fair points

Trump wants to leave a legacy in the region - he may manage it, he may not.

I reckon he wants a Nobel peace  prize - oh the irony !

Again, I know I'm being flippant and I genuinely hope for a good outcome but:

Maybe they've gone back to Romania.

Yep.

We live in interesting times.

Well, Kissinger got one so at least it would continue that tradition.

Kopfkino (one of the smartest people I've seen on a forum, here or otherwise, shame he's not about anymore), had it right over five years ago about a recent topic of discussion here.

No idea sadly, perhaps went off to make an absolute wedge in the City and so didn't have any more time to spend with us lot.

We didn't agree on much in terms of worldview but his intellect and knowledge base I respected hugely.

Great contributor although, like you, I found some of his worldviews were questionable and to cock. Somewhat of a pedant too. Once had a very protracted debate over the origin and application of the term 'jingoism'. He could be very sage like on occasions and his erudition was manifest.

In spite of this, I bet he wouldn't know who, what was it?,  Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury are either.
