The UK announced in October it would cede sovereignty of the archipelago in the Indian Ocean, but maintain control of the base on the largest island Diego Garcia under a 99-year lease. Efforts to get the treaty signed before Trump's inauguration on Monday had been made, the BBC understands, and it had been expected the Mauritian cabinet would approve the deal on Wednesday. The deal had already been greenlit by the Biden administration but the UK prime minister's office on Wednesday said the incoming Trump government would now "consider" the deal. I would have thought that keeping hold of the CIA tortu-, sorry, "black site" would be enough for the US and their Conservative/Reform sycophants. Evidently the idea of empire dies hard. Let's hope he torpedoes it because it looks like an absolutely diabolical deal even by the UK government's very low standards

Even when it's really not.

(Either by allowing Israel to do as they need there or via USA becoming directly involved in effective sanctions). that also works for Saudi btw But Iran were basically defeated a few months back, they’ve lost at every single turn. Yet Israel were still bombing, I think there’s more to it. I think Netanyahu thought Trump would give him a free hand and he’s clearly said no. Add in the fact that the gulf states trust Trump more on the basis that he sees them as opportunities rather than inhumane theocracies.

Fair points Trump wants to leave a legacy in the region - he may manage it, he may not. I reckon he wants a Nobel peace prize - oh the irony ! Edited 15 January 2025 by st albans fox

Great contributor although, like you, I found some of his worldviews were questionable and to cock. Somewhat of a pedant too. Once had a very protracted debate over the origin and application of the term 'jingoism'. He could be very sage like on occasions and his erudition was manifest. In spite of this, I bet he wouldn't know who, what was it?, Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury are either.
