Worst than appointing Cooper and yet another baffling decision by the board

Pretty much what I was told, conversations started a few weeks ago, they then progressed this week to the point where it's as good as done.

I do think a Rohl appointment would have a higher ceiling and be more exciting, but with that does come more uncertainty and chance of it blowing up in your face. You can see the appeal of Martin given that he's available and was promoted out of this division just a couple of years ago, plus we have the core of a squad that would suit how he wants to play.

The worry about him not being able to handle the Prem is a little moot given we're not in that division and ultimately right now it would be nice to have that problem in 12 months' time.

Russell Martin has had one season in the top half of the Championship and that was with one of the best squads in the division, and then needing the play-offs to get promotion. None of his previous clubs would want him back given the opportunity, having been bored to death and sick of watching defenders throwing the ball into their own net. Think some are a bit too optimistic in their judgement of him.

The hapless Rudkin up to his usual tricks. Has he got a mate on the Southampton board, how many more Southampton failures will he bring he.

Potentially not his decision, someone described us as a rudderless ship earlier in the thread, it may turn out Ruderless is more appropriate!

RM coming in isn’t as bad as most are expecting!

MartinBall dominates the championship with the players he will have at his disposal.

Very likeable guy and players seem to really like him as well.

comes across very well in the media and he has a massive point to prove.

i think the recruitment will be decent with him as well.

Please take your optimism elsewhere.  It isn't welcome here.

I would prefer a manager who could potentially go on to lead us in the Prem as well

Unless he has completely changed his tactical ideas that it is Plan A and that is it (as has been the case in all of his jobs so far) I cannot see it going well if he does get us up and no chance will we sack him when we would need to

After the last 12 months,  where has all this negativity come from?

Russel Martin teams are notorious for leaking goals.

I don't mind him having a philosophy and way of playing but you have to have a plan B or even be pragmatic and actually tailoring your approach against better and stronger sides.

He just doesn't do that. He needs to learn from his experience at Southampton and have a rethink. He comes across as a reasonably intelligent and level headed guy which is always a good start but on the other hand he'll probably be too stubborn to change it up

One thing for sure he'll be motivated after his appalling time in prem with Southampton.

Listening to him recently, I don't see any sign that he is willing to even contemplate having a Plan B. He has talked about learning from his mistakes, but also implied that he will be doubling down on his playing ethos.

I think he will get us promoted with his Plan A, but really struggle in the Premier League again. That isn't the worst thing in the world, as we could still give ourselves a chance of staying up with a smart replacement by October, but I see why people don't warm to the idea of having a Manager that is likely to fail in the future, and also do it with a style that is often boring.

I also want to get promoted at the first time of asking though, so if it is him, I will try to focus on the positive that he achieved that just 12 months ago. Whether doing that through the play-offs is seen as a negative, I don't take much notice of. His remit was promotion and he did that, and I'd argue that Leeds actually had a stronger team too. Southampton were the worst of the 3 relegated teams the season prior.

If it is Martin, he is going to need a very good start, as the majority on here at least, are clearly unhappy. Then again, the majority on here were reasonable optimistic about RVN, and look how that turned out.

All things that were said about Rodgers because people were too naive to see through him.

I can’t believe people are falling for all the empty platitudes again.

It’s horrific football and that’s all that matters.

And with Rodgers it worked for 2 and a half seasons.

We don’t need Martin to be forever, just get us back into the Premier League and develop the younger players we have coming through.

Most teams are going to play a low block style of football against us next season, we need a manager that can coach how to break that down - which is exactly what Martin does well. It worked with Maresca so can see it working again.

Being a likeable guy is great when things are going well, but soon turns to shit when results aren't going your way.

I seem to remember that nice guy throwing his players under the bus before he got the sack and pointing the finger everywhere but at himself.  Top bloke.

Don’t talk daft! If he gains us promotion that’s all that matters.

That's why they have gone for him, Ruud is the complete opposite and exactly what we needed for a rebuild get the bad eggs out.. now we are stuck with this soft under belly.

I agree with you but it’s going to be RM isn’t it! Let’s hope he’s learnt his lesson from Southampton. He’s had plenty of time to think and prepare himself for his next job. Also let’s get promoted first then worry about leading us into the prem.

He won’t get us promoted, I will lay that here right now anyone who thinks he will is delusional. He finished 4th last time and will be in a division with quality ambitious well run sides like Birmingham and Wrexham, plus Cov, Southampton, Ipswich and a few others. If we employ this clown we won’t even be near the top 10, more likely bottom 3. This rotten club deserve it.
