Naming NFL stadium for Trump would be 'beautiful', White House says - BBC News

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dr8g0r742o.amp

Is this why he was being booed? Could you imagine a British Prime Minister suggesting a football stadium being named after them?

Of course, this is from BBC News, so might not actually be true .

The president has also proposed constructing a triumphal arch, the so-called "Arc de Trump", on the National Mall across from the Lincoln Memorial. Lawmakers have also proposed a bill that would rename the Kennedy Center the Donald J. Trump Center for Performing Arts.

No reason to doubt what this guy says whatever.

However, it does rather infer that there's only one form or angle of activism that is pertinent here and requires addressing.

There is certainly a dominant activism in the younger likely to work at the BBC demographic.

Again, noted and in all likelihood correct, but that is far from the only factor at play here.

Someone just needs to put trump  in a retirement home out in the middle of the ocean so no one ever has to hear from him again. He can even call it trump island to make himself feel better. Even the dumbest of American people will surely look back after this clown has died and be like oh that wasn’t normal was it 🤦‍♂️

He wants to sue the BBC for $1bn

He wants to sue everyone for $1bn.

While he has a point (I hate saying that), the problem with it is proving deliberate manipulation of the truth (which could be laid at the door of the third party production company), rather than the BBC being lax in their fact checking, having found something presented to them which fit their narrative or, indeed, seemed entirely believable. (When we saw this at first, did we go, "wait a minute! Trump would NEVER say something like that!"?)

Another thing the BBC could do is threaten to counter-sue for the times Trump has claimed the BBC were lying when they (probably ) weren't.

That's the licence fee going up to cover that. Unless they use the savings on the Lineker contract.

This. Fire with fire.

While that is likely true, that's also a hugely right skewed use of panelists on news and similar programmes.

It's often noted how many times farage has been on question time Vs ed Davie or Caroline Lucas and her subsequent green party leaders.

Journalistic panellists also skew heavily rightwards, with use of right wing think tanks a real issue.

So he can lie about everything every time he speaks and call people every name under the sun but any time someone says something he doesn’t like he wants to sue them. He posted a video of himself dropping sh** on to people s couple of weeks ago.

The US Supreme Court has decided not to revisit its ruling a decade ago legalising same-sex marriage.

The justices turned down an appeal from Kim Davis, who was ordered by a lower court to pay compensation to a same-sex couple after refusing to grant them a marriage licence.

Ms Davis argued that same-sex marriage conflicted with her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian.

The 2015 ruling in the case of Obergefell v Hodges was a historic victory for LGBT rights in the US, but some conservatives argue it dealt a blow to religious liberty.

A rare piece of unexpected, but very welcome, news.

This is all clearly a concerted right wing push against the BBC to finish it off once and for all.

It’ll be interesting to see what Starmer does, support a great British institution even if it needs reform to adapt to modern mass media, or suck up to Trump and hand over £1 billion of tax payers money all in the name of the special relationship.

Also the biggest mistake the BBC ever made is pretending that impartiality can be a thing. It simply can’t, you can’t for example impartially report on the Russia Ukraine war because it would be against our national interest to admit that we have some culpability in that situation.

It just needs to report facts, whichever way they lean. That's what impartiality should mean. If somebody's lying call them out rather than pretending there's two equal sides. That's where it goes wrong.

The BBC needs protecting precisely because it attempts to provide balance, even though it fails in both directions sometimes, whereas GB news, the mail, express and telegraph that attack it so much clearly don't do that.

Why just a concerted right wing push? You'd have thought the left wing would also want an unbiased public service broadcaster, wouldn't they?

The BBC (and other Government institutions) absolutely needs a top to bottom reform and not just because of this Panorama disaster. Campaigning journalists need to know the BBC is not a platform for this.

I really hope the BBC can sort themselves out as they make some great content, other than Strictly come dancing, hate that.

Because the left wing want to see it unbiased. The right wing want to see it abolished, or at least consumed by commercial, short-term self interested cause, in the same way a lot of the print media that criticise it are. That's a pretty critical difference.

The very idea of truth is being subverted, it has been for some time, and it is not just disconcerting, but also deeply dangerous for any kind of future, that people are selecting the wrong targets - or are being manipulated into doing so.

There are undoubtedly those on the right who would dearly like to finish the BBC off, as you say. The problem is, the BBC has gifted its enemies a huge arsenal of ammunition with which to attack it— not just with the Panorama fiasco, but with the other areas highlighted in the Prescott report.

And while you are correct that true impartiality is likely impossible to achieve, that does not mean it should not be attempted. The entire justification for the license fee is that the BBC is different—better— than other news organisations. If it is shown to be just as unashamedly partisan as everyone else, it becomes much harder to make a case for it. I really hope the BBC survives this and becomes stronger because I still believe it has a vital role to play, but it has created one hell of a mess for itself.

That's true, especially the vital role part - because, again, no one wins if we no longer have at least something approaching a single point of truth from which to draw and act.

No one

I mostly only consume bbc media on their website but the standard of their news articles is appalling. The sport section reporting is also a joke.

And I dont care how much Trump is a liar and a hypocrite, purposefully editing footage together to push a certain narrative is unforgivable for our national broadcaster.

Major reforms needed or it should go and be replaced by something better.

A viewpoint it appears quite a few people share.

I'm not entirely sure that wider context on the matter should be considered totally unimportant, though.

Wider context of it now being our national broadcaster has completely validated Trumps 'fake news' narrative by actually making fake news. It's an utterly embarrassing own goal

And be that as it may (and it's a fair comment), it might still be a good idea not to hamstring one of the best allies that still remain against the loathsome sentiment that people like Trump champion that, if left unchecked, will consume us all.
