I think the reason he doesn’t get in the side is his his performance against Huddersfield, he did look awful to be honest

He did have a howler and it was compounded by us getting knocked out and thus he’s missed a second opportunity to impress in a cup match. The season is very early and Nelson will get his chance. He just needs to grab it by the scruff of the neck when it happens. Every time Faes has a brain fart like the goal last night he gets closer. Okoli might be ahead at the moment but his lack of ability on the ball will ultimately trip him up in this system.

Always been confident that the time would come where he’s viewed as the correct option this season.

Lack of EFL cup games has gone against him to stake a claim, but I’m still confident we head into 2026 with him starting. If he hasn’t had a chance by mid November though, I’ll be worried.

He’s now watched Okoli look like a plonker regularly while Faes has come in and done Faes things.

I wouldn’t blame him for wanting to move elsewhere.

If he watches them fxxk up and thinks to himself that he wants to move, then he's got a weak mentality. He should be thinking he's better and he'll show it.  In training and in his opportunities.  He fxxked the last audition.  He'll get another.  And then he's got to make it count.  I think he will.

Of course there's going to be frustration if he feels he's not being given a fair crack, but like I said, he fxxked the last opportunity.  More will come around.

Did enough at Oxford to warrant more of a chance ahead of our calamities IMO.

Hes got every right to feel miffed.

I don't disagree, but he does have to take responsibility for his own part in that.  He was given a chance to impress against League one opposition and was an absolute bomb scare.  It definitely feels harsh to put limits on him based on one awful 45 minutes in a makeshift team, but that's what he's been given, and that's how he performed.  As Pliskin says after the Faes mistake yesterday Ben should be put into contention.

I think Nelson is currently in that zone where a player’s stock is rising because he’s not in the team. It would be good to get him involved and hopefully he’s got a bright future but, if we don’t get promoted, I doubt Vesty and Faes will be the issue.

The more pressing concern is our lack of creativity and goal threat. We somehow need to find a fix for that first

He can’t be brought in now. He has not played any minutes for over a month. He is out of practice and would be completely coming from the cold.

After his injury, bringing him back out the cold will probably just result in him getting crocked again. And then he will be under so much pressure knowing that a huge proportion of the fans will be just waiting for him to make a mistake to call for him to be dropped again. Either way, it won’t end well.

We have committed down the Vestergaard/Faes route now so we just have to stick with it and hope it doesn’t get too bad.

That's nonsense, they train together all the time, and if that concept held any water then your first XI of the season should never change!

Centre back is different. You develop a partnership and there is less changing than attacking positions.

And what is nonsense. The fact he is out of match practice following injury or the fact he is under huge scrutiny from the fans?

Our 3 other centre backs can get away with making mistake after mistake in multiple games but Nelson has a bad 45 minutes (and was good in the 2nd half) in his only appearance of the season and thats it, bombed down the pecking order and seemingly very unlikely to get another chance this side of January unless Martí makes a very big decision on his choices

1 chance is all you are getting and you fvcked it mate, see in the FA Cup 3rd round in January (if he hasn’t dropped further with Souttar back by then)

Absolutely ridiculous if that is all the opportunity he is going to get and people actually defend it as being reasonable when you see the other shite our other centre backs serve up on a regular basis and can get away with it

I wouldn't worry about owner intervention here. Ours is barely in the same hemisphere when the team plays let alone telling the manager which CB to play.

Aiyawatt probably doesn't know what our score was yet.

It is a valid point football isn’t just played out on the pitch anymore it’s also a financial element , as @MPH says I am pretty sure there will be a directive that certain players are to be included to protect future transfer value and this will be the same at every club. It’s business just like being told by a boss to do something you don’t necessarily agree with but accept as part and parcel of business strategy and politics.

Nelson and Page are both included in the matchday travelling party so suggests they are well regarded and Marti is keeping them included but I do think there is a directive to keep some of the big earners in the shop window in the hope of attracting decent offers in January.

Which would make not playing Nelson even more daft as his value has the highest ceiling of our CBs by a mile. If that was what they were doing Nelson would be playing.

This is a manager taking a short term view (contrary to what he's said) and barely scraping the results. I gave him benefit of the doubt but each passing week this happens it's running out.

He'll be pushing for a loan in Jan if he's not starting regularly by then.

They will be fairly used to each other in training, but fair enough on the match practice.

Not sure why people are looking for conspiracy. Nelson cannot impress enough in training. Why isn’t it that simple? Our 90 minute window is a sliver of the observational scope the management team have.  :dunno:

Why? Seemed reasonable. :dunno:

So Nelson isn’t allowed to **** up in his ‘auditions’ but Wout Faes is despite being a senior pro and seasoned international? Where’s the logic in that? He then says he’s of weak mentality to stick around. So if he doesn’t want to get bombed out the squad and our own fans to cuck tweedle Dee and tweedle dum for their **** ups as opposed to an academy graduate then he’s weak mentally? Make it make sense

Of course he is allowed to. He will make mistakes and that happens. But why do we think he is not in the team because of that? He is (I hope) not playing because he it is felt in training that he is not the best partnership, and will be allowed to try again when the opportunity arises; either through making him a strong choice in training, injury or shocking form within the current partnership.

I don’t even count Faes’ cock ups as strong enough reasons, that’s just the sort of that twatty defender he is.
