Wednesday fans appear to be losing patience with their manager.

I said at the time I can’t believe he kept the job. New owners should have appointed a competent manager. They’re throwing away this season as it goes on.

Only their second defeat in 10 games. Also have up to two games in hand. They'll be fine. Panicking right now would be a heavy overreaction.

If anyone wants to feel some hope, there is precedent for teams getting off to slow starts but turning it around and getting promoted. Derby in 23/24 had 17 points from 10 games (just two more than we have now) and got promoted with 92 points. Southampton in 2010-11 had just 12 points from 10 games and got promoted with 92 points. Looking closer to home, Southampton under Russell Martin and Leeds under Farke had 16 points from 10 games in the championship in 23/24 and finished on 87 and 90 points respectively despite both having an end of season slump. We do however have to find consistency at around 2.2 ppg to have a shot at automatic promotion.

It's a tough ask, but with our players we should be able to achieve it, provided Martin keeps the football simple and we play with energy and zip as opposed to passing for the sake of it.

To reframe this slightly, we're currently 7 points off of 2nd place with 36 games of our season remaining - 35 for Huddersfield.

So over the remainder of the season we have to outperform Huddersfield by 0.2 PPG... plus whatever we get in our game in hand. Obviously there are other teams that come into play as well, but thats the biggest head-to-head differential to close the gap to automatics.

Best case scenario if we win the game in hand, we're needing to make up 4 points over 35 games - which is just an additional 0.11 PPG compared to our rivals.

Given how atrocious we were at the start of the season, we should have no problem shifting our PPG up as more and more games are played, if we truly are starting to turn the corner and play like our on-paper strength would suggest. Whether we sustain that remains to be seen, but its reassuring that there aren't 2 teams already running away with it, which would make our job a lot harder.
