Becks leaving Real

Talk about selling your soul to the devil or the yankee dollar in this case!

If he needed the money I could understand it, but his footballing talent is going to be wasted in LA, he has at least a few years at the top left in him in Europe.

He planned on retiring to the US and running a football school or something, though, didn't he?

What better way to get to grips with Football in the US than playing it first?

Besides, if he raises his profile in the US, it'll help his football school/academy get off the ground big time. ;)

David Beckham will leave Real Madrid and join Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old former England captain will sign a five-year deal.

Beckham told Reuters: "This week Real asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract for a further two seasons.

"After considering several options to stay in Madrid or join other major British and European teams, I have decided to join LA Galaxy."

Sport Academy: Work on your free-kicks

Beckham left Manchester United in July 2003 to sign for Real, who paid £25m for the midfielder's services.

However, in the three-and-a-half seasons since his arrival, the Spanish giants have failed to win any silverware.

This season has proved particularly disappointing for Beckham, who was dropped by England coach Steve McClaren and struggled to win a place in Real's first team.

LA Galaxy admitted their interest in signing Beckham in November, when manager Alexi Lalas told the BBC Sport website of his admiration for the former England captain.

Landon Donovan, Galaxy's star player, said Beckham's arrival would be a huge boost to MLS.

"I think it's hard to quantify what David Beckham being here would mean," he said.

"Marketing-wise it's a dream come true and it's not a 35, 36-year-old washed-up guy.

"It's a guy who can still play and a guy who still has a lot of appeal, probably the most famous soccer player in the world."

And US national coach Bob Bradley added: "We have improved in so many ways during the 11 years of the league.

"But we are constantly trying to get more people to take notice and certainly bringing David Beckham to LA will push that part of it up the ladder

Can't quite understand this. He's 31, what on earth is he doing? Ok, so he'll earn a ****in shit load of cash if he conquers America but the lad still has a lot to offer at a high level. I'm sad to see him not come back to the Premiership.

I reckon POSH probably made his mind up for him to make the move to LA

There's his England chances well and truly gone.

That went a long time ago lassy! Anyway I actually don't think Beckham could cut it anymore in the Prem. Major League soccer is probably the best level he could hope for.

This is not about football.

In all honesty, there was nowhere else he could have gone.

To have moved to say Bolton (a club who expressed a passing interest) would have damaged brand Beckham. He would be playing for a low profile club, possibly struggling for pace, all of which would damage his global image (which rakes in millions per year).

Moving to LA Galaxy allows him to be the top player in the league, the biggest star and global icon. He shouldn't be exposed too often for ability in that league and can boost brand Beckham in America.

Beckham could still cut it at the top level, but football plays second fiddle. Maybe he's lost his desire to push himself at the top level. Either way, business Beckham has made its decision.

His new wage disgusts me  Then makes me angry  £492,000 per week!!

Its not really that - that includes new sponsorship deals he's getting due to being in the USA, the real deal is $9m a year according to some US sources, which works out as £90,000 a week, which is roughly in line with premiership wages. Even so, not bad for a league where the rest of the team combined would be earning 1/4 what he'd be getting.

would you turn down $250m?

Whatever his motivations, I hope Beckham moving over there helps to kick the league on. The sooner the yanks are playing more football (soccer, hah) the better.

Well probably not, but in the continued development of football as a truely worldwide sport it'd be a big step. It's be pretty much inescapable with the US on board. What other major nations don't play much footy?
