Pub chain to ban smoking

Recommended Posts

JD Wetherspoons to ban smoking in all pubs by May 2006

60 pubs will have smoking bans by this coming May.

I think this is great, to be able to drink in clean, fresh air will be fantastic.

not happy with that. still cant see whats wrong wih a smoking and non smoking section to be honest. shit pub anyway!!

No smoking areas only lessen the amount of smoke we breathe in to a degree. It still makes me ill. Besides, many smokers do not respect these areas, and often walk through with cigarettes in their hands.

Its always a contentious issue this one, I personally hate cigarettes but I cant see any smoker agreeing to this and would possibly play the 'human rights' card - it could lose Wetherspoons a lot of income if smokers boycott them for pubs that do allow smokers.

Fantastic. The spoons in Oadby is our regular and we will continue to go there for a while. Although they may lose business from smokers, it could possibly see the reverse as people who have been put off going there because of the smoking will start going. I think its a great idea.

What about human rights of bar staff who work in these pubs? Employers have a duty to provide a safe working environment under the Employers liability act. No cases have emerged yet, but it is an interesting area of law that will surely be considered before long.

Banning smoking altogether would save the health service billions of pounds. Billions of pounds that non smokers pay into it.

Just food for thought, and a little bit of something to ge the argument going.

Smokers have the right to choose to smoke. However, shouldn't non-smokers have the right to go out and socialise without breathing in pollutants and carcinogens?

We went to Boston (Mass.) where smoking is banned in all public buildings. The pubs were still very busy, and what we noticed was that in areas where there were lots of pubs together, people tended to move from one to another, smoking in between. Where there was a single pub, smokers just went outside.

As for the New York 'failure' which somebody is likely to bring up, smoking was banned on Manhatten, and some other districts, but not others. Smokers, and their friends, would drink in Brooklyn instead. However, a report I recently read suggests the numbers of people in bars on Manhatten have gone up to where they were before the smoking ban, as people realise they can't be bothered travelling just to have a cigarette.

I like this line of thinking, but the logical conclusion is we ban cars. After all they spew out "pollutants and carcinogens" and may well kill more innocent third parties every year than passive smoking.

My point being that before we start banning things we need to know the risks, and to place the risk in context. If there are other things causing more problems why not tackle that first. ;)

Cars are now rated for their emissions, and manufacturers are having to look at the environmental issues involved with their use. Millions of pounds are being spent in trying to find ways of making car emissions as least damaging as possible.

There is nothing the tobacco industry can do with cigarettes.

I worked in weatherspoons for about 6 months and one of the reasons i left was the smoke. The amount of people who smoked at the bar really annoyed me when there was a sign telling them not too! Only about 25% of the population smoke now so youv'e got to give the majority the benifit.

At our 'Spoons there's a little garden outside, so people can still smoke there in a way, so it's not too bad.

On the subject of staff and health, a lot of places now have smoking banned at the bar.

Also, there was a story on Look North (go local news) of a pub owner who was told by the doctor that any longr working behind a smokey bar and he would go blind because of all the smoke.

Obvious he'd been working behind a bar for a hell of a long time, but it's makes you think.

He banned smoking in his pub, but profits fell drastically, so he's had no option but to allow smoking again.

This will happen if there are other pubs allowing smoking. Having said that, one pub near me has gone no smoking, and it's quite busy whenever we've been in, but it is a 'foody' pub.

However, I wouldn't expect Wetherspoons to suffer, they're so cheap I suspect smokers would still go in there.

I think the main problem I have with smoking is that the nation...irrespective of whether we smoke or not...pay billions in taxes into the NHS. Smoking is one of the biggest problems confronting the NHS and billions is spent on smoking related disesases.

I just think it unfair that non smokers should have to foot the bill for this.

So do I, but I have the problem in that the NHS might have to treat me because of other people smoking.

I think it's an excellent decision. I want to be able to enjoy having a few drinks without inhaling all that crap. 'Spoons aint the classiest of places, but who cares when it's cheap. ;)
