Leicester City confirmed on Monday that Don Mackay had joined the club as Sporting Director.

McKay brings a wealth of experience to the football club having spent almost 50 years in the game.

The Scotsman joins the Foxes from Middlesbrough, where he held the post of Chief European Scout.

After a spell coaching Bristol City's youth team between 1974-78, former goalkeeper Mackay began his management career with Danish side Norresundby. He spent two years in Scandinavia, before returning to more familiar shores to take on the management post at Dundee in 1980.

Another short spell in Denmark followed for Mackay in 1983, before he became assistant manager and then manager at Coventry City a year later. A four-year stint as manager of Blackburn Rovers followed between 1987-91, before Mackay made his way down to London to take on the post of Fulham boss.

More recently he has been Director of Football at Aidrie, where his squad won the Scottish Challenge Cup.

Mackay has also been part of the scouting network at Arsenal, where he uncovered a youthful Freddie Ljungberg.

Guess he gets more involved with the football side, a chance he maybe didn't have at Boro. Be interesting to see what they think of him over there. Seems promising. I like the fact that Allen can admit there are more experienced people out there that he can learn from.

Out of curiosity, who did the scouting last season? Surely not Roberto Kelly, albeit there was never any money to sign

Mad Dog, Casino Jimmy and The Don, I'm happy with these

according to milan there was no scouting structure in place

shocking

Terrific appointment and someone MM had set his sights on before getting a manager. DM offered up a list of managerial candidates he'd work with and MM got it done.

This kind of relationship is golden :worship:

Although it was shocking and highlights why Uncle Milan was needed so badly.

So did anyone actually go to Cardiff to watch Luigi Glombard, or did Rob Kelly just go through the list of registered players in the Championship and draw a circle around any foreign sounding ones

Made me laugh when he was sent packing and RK said he'd be monitering his progress!!

How stupid do people feel when they bought in to the "Rob Kelly has a wealth of knowledge of the English game" propeganda when thrust apon Levein?

Mackay heads for Walkers Stadium

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has lost his chief European scout to ambitious Championship outfit Leicester City.

Don Mackay, who has spent the last five years or so scouring the continent for the Teessiders, has left the club to take up the post of sporting director at the Walkers Stadium.

The former Rangers, Blackburn, Coventry and Fulham manager will work alongside new Foxes boss Martin Allen as he attempts to guide the club back into the Premiership.

Mackay said: "Martin is a very determined young man.

"While I know (chairman) Milan Mandaric's idea of success will be promotion, it will not be easy because the Championship is hard to get out of in the right direction.

"But every year, there is a team that comes through that no-one expected to be fighting for promotion, as with Derby this season.

"So hopefully, I will see Boro again in a year or so's time when Leicester are in the Premier League."

Mackay was recruited by Boro in December 2001 during former boss Steve McClaren's first season and has fond memories of his time with the club.

He told Boro's official website: "For me, the definite highlight was the (2004) Carling Cup final, though last season's UEFA Cup match against Steaua Bucharest takes some beating.

"Equally, it has been wonderful to see Stewart Downing progress into the England team and the likes of Adam Johnson and David Wheater continue their development.

"Leicester won the Academy league last season, so they have got some good young players coming through.

"I hope we can give them the opportunities Middlesbrough's young players have had in recent seasons."

If you want to have a poke at anybody then have a poke at those that have run the Club for the last 4 or 5 years. Thracian (and others like Jonbluefox9) has/have long touted the merits of the Academy.

I say have a pop at Thrac when the side he is touting is bottom of the league and not the best Academy side in the UK. ;)

Had a brief look at the signings going into Boro from europe over the last few years and came up with

Rochenback

Mendietta

Pogatetz

Woodgate

Maccarone

Wouldn't mind some of that ability here.

Sounds a bit risqué to me. I hope they've done their police checks on him?

On a non-libellous note, this seems quite a sensible move. I'm pleased that MM is looking to get people that can work together, rather than filling the offices of FW with his drinking buddies. This bodes well.

I'd just like a player where this isn't the case the first time you see him... he strikes a ball with his right foot and you think... 'oh right, we've got a left footed player on our hands here - just what we need, a nice cultured left foot' (only a left footed player is ever described as having a cultured foot). Then you see him hit one with his left foot and you realise he is in fact dog shite. He might be good in the air you think. You know he isn't. He's sh it.

I want a player where the above isn't the case.

Please.
