Smudge Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 Leicester win 3-1 with goals by Jonathan Hayes, Iain Hume and an 30 yard corker from James Wesolowski against an own goal by Sheehan.City maintained a good tempo through the first half and although constant changes disrupted the second half there is no doubt that July 2007 can be written as the time Leicester City started trying to play some proper football again. Man of the Match? Difficult to tell with so many substitutions. But Alan Sheehan made up for his rather unlucky own goal by single handedly making the goal which restored City's lead. Sheehan played almost a full game and looked back to his old self, constantly making himself available once we gained possession, tirelessly making an extra man in attack and delivering some pin-perfect long passes. Also contesting was Iain Hume, who, if anything, seems even faster and more energetic than last year and another goal after taking a 25-yard pass from Sheehan was reward for his non-stop tenacity. Jonathan Hayes was also impressive. He claimed the first goal after a brilliant move involving Sean Newton and James Chambers although whether Mark DeVries got the last touch is debateable. That was after 10 minutes during which Leicester had entered the fray like a team possessed with DeVries almost panicking the home defence into conceding a goal in the first 30 seconds. Hayes continued to drive forward, smashing one piledriver of a shot and combining in several impressive moves in front of a record crowd for Hinckley of 3079. Hinckley were reeling early on but somehow survived and a corner resulted in their equaliser when Nielsen failed to deal with a cross which whipped across his six yard box and seemed almost to be going in before catching Sheehan unawares and rebounding into the net. Nielsen never looked comfortable against Hinckley's accurate corners and there was always the chance of an equaliser before James Wesolowski was fed by Porter, took one look and fired a fearsome rocket of shot into the net from 30 yards midway through the second half. City might have scored at least another three. Sheehan almost chipped over the Hinckley goalkeeper after a good move with Newton, Elvis Hammond brought a brilliant save from the Hinckley goalkeeper with a rasping volley on the turn and, finally, the best move of the game involved Porter clearing 40 yards to Hammond, racing almost the length of field to take the return and chipping it to the far post where a right post header passed just wide. So nearly a goal to remember. Richard Stearman skippered the side in midfield and again looked back to his enthusiastic best. A forum member I sat with thought our supposedly vulnerable left side looked our strongest feature when Sheehan and Hayes were rampant and another fanatical City follower beside him said we were suddenly spoilt for choice in midfield because suddenly there was all the support, passing and moving that was missing last season. Ryan Beswick had 15 minutes or so as replacement for Sheehan and confirmed his quick-passing competence, Clemence had a short appearance which warmed his engine, Scott Garner, Fraser Tuttle and Steven Howard were introduced from the Academy and altogether Martin Allen must have been thrilled with the enthusiasm and determination of everyone. No, Leicester City are not yet a smooth running machine. But they looked to be fast getting there and the evening was good entertainment for all who turned up. Ratings: Neilsen 5 (Not convincing. Just doesn't dominate when crosses are fired in. Fortunately, corners apart, there weren't many). James Chambers 7 (Tired towards the end but looks a real find and was always involved all along the flank). Bruno N'Gotty 7 (Steady and offered veryl litle by way of chances in open play). Gareth McAuley 6 (A little rusty but sound enough). Alan Sheehan 8 (Looked the player of two years back and always a threat going forward. Another assist). Sean Newton 6.5 (Mixture of good and not so good. One assist). Richard Stearman 7.5 (Endless energy and oosing confidence again) Rad Kishishev 6.5 (Competent cimplicity) Jon Hayes 7.5 (Looked set for a stormer early on with his goal and tenacious runs. faded later). Mark DeVries 6 (Around for one goal, should have had a couple more) Iain Hume 8 (The epithamy of everything Martin Allen wants. Endless effort and another goal). Significant Subs: Wesolowski 7.5 (great goal and again looked a class act). Porter 7 (Helped re-establish our passing and moving in midfield and almost created a wonder goal) Hammond 7 (His volley brought the save of the match and he always looked like trouble for Hinckley). Beswick 6.5 (Job done with nothing to fault. Just another who can play a bit and be relied on). Clemence 5.5 (No particular impact but clearly a capable player). Cort 6 (Classy touches and a little more fitness) Also used Hellings, Tuttle, Howard, Garner. Thanks for that Mt T..........
Milky Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 I was loving all the play down the left and right wings in the first half. Newton and chambers linked up very well. Jonny hayes is hume no. 2! Mainly due to chambers. Newton was lazy.
Ashley Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 ha! yeh my mate spotted him we were about 7 people to the right of Hendo were you near that fit blond!!! Yeh think so Behind the goal with a lad on cruches aka Toby-Lcfc and his mate and my mate Btw, i'm a fool. Toby or not Toby Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 Btw, i'm a fool. Right behind Weso's goal and I actually ducked  It's just a natural reaction dunno why though
Joe. Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 Thracian's match report that clearly wasn't the same game I watched Thracian your match report is hilarious  If Weso's goal was 30 yards then I'm the Queen. It was just outside the area And I'm not quite sure how you thought Sheehan could contest for man of the match, we all thought he did nothing particularly special. Stearman was played out of position and it really showed. Oh and by the way, was it Beswick who came on and played left back? Whoever it was impressed me.

That was me! I got me a mention in Thracians after match post! Ledge. Officially made it on FT now! Other than that i agree entirely although i thought Chambers pushed for man of the match aswell.

General Smuts Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 Don't worry I ducked too and I was only thinking about it in my car on my way home. We were miles away! It would never have hit us, it was Weso not the Fridge!
General Smuts Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 Nice to meet you btw Cheers matey you too. Can't say i'd ever recognise you again though Thanks to DavieG for the lift and the intros

Lichfieldfox. Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Sitting within earshot of MA, shaking Milan's hand at half time (came across him by accident). Loads of +ves esp Johnny Haynes, Ryan Beswick, Kishishev, Weso,Hume,Chambers. Not too impressed with Mdv or Cort. Hammond looked quick, had a snap volley parried by their keeper and was unlucky. Not sure about Neilsen and tbh thought beswick did better than Sheehan Loved the way MA told Stears off and coached Elvis on the touchline. Back 2 in first half a little wooden/slow for me. Liked Stearman as CB in second half. Hellings had spell on RM and CB I'd like to see Weso and Kishishev together but suspect they are similar players. MOM for me was Chambers. Starting 11 for me would be: Henderson Chambers N'Gotty Stearman Mattock Haynes Weso Clemence Ka'abi Hume Fryatt Subs Logan, McAuley, Porter, Cort, Kishishev
BartonFox Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 Bring back Rab Douglas I hope to Christ Allen is in the market for a better 'keeper because this could be our downfall this season. Finally someone has got hold of Sheehan and Stearman and given them a shake. We need a left midfielder/winger as well and 2 pacy forwards. Nielsen - bombscare Chambers - looks the part N'Gotty - Everything Martin Keown wasn't McAuley - Still to be convineced, prefer Stearman there TBH Sheehan - Hmmm, I hope he keeps this improvement up Newton - Still a poor man's Impey but he might just have something for us Kishishev - He is going to do great things Stearman - Lucky boy, but if his attitude remains as is now then great. But f'ck off back in to defence you are not a central midfielder Hayes - We need someone else out there but he'll do as a back up de Vries - I love the big lump, he may well be useful come August Hume - Runs around people love it, we'll see against professional opposition, but does look better than under Kelly Wesolowski - A real talent, just nagging doubts about those legs for some reason. Clemence - Oozes class, will be a major asset Cort - You can see the class and if he goes through preseason without injury we have a player Kids - good future The rest are insignificant and won't figure too much.

If ya did DavieG seen it and thought of you. He'll be pleased you posted now
Thracian Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 Thracian, no. He didn't do much wrong, I can't even blame him for the own goal, but he was nowhere near as good as you make out. He ventured more times tonight into the 30 yards either side of the edge of Hinckley's penalty area than Nils managed through the whole of last season and was providing both an outlet and a supportive link between defence to attack. Like Beswick, he's a players player really - a guy who makes other people's jobs easier. And two assists from a left-back in two games. It's people like Sheehan who just might help us get the goals we need when the season starts. Cos we got very few assists from left-back last season.

Feel with continued work at his fitness, and a run of games under him to increase confidence Sheehan could well be a good player for us next season! What happened with the own goal i couldn't see properly, sun was in my eyes?

What happened with the own goal i couldn't see properly, sun was in my eyes? Corner came in, Chambers jumped, ball skimmed top of head, took it above everyone who could have headed it, was curling in, Sheehan stook out a leg to stop it, bounced off his knee, onto the bar, down and over the line.
Tomassi Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 Star Players Tonight Hayes (MOTM) - silky skillz-mon! Chambers - So comfortable on the ball N'Gotty - won everything, most solid player Kishishev - who said this guy was a crap passer? He started everything! Wesolowski - awesome goal from the kid and good battling Hume - well its hume innit Players who also impressed me... Cort - he held the ball up ever so well! Won most things in the air and tracked back! De Vries first 20 minutes - he was flying and deserved the goal i thought to be fair, faltered as the half went on though. Sheehan - Linked with Hayes really effectively i thought and was never rash. kept the ball when other players would have hoofed. Could be a good season for the kid Players looking off the pace... Newton - seemed to struggle Hellings - Touch seemed to be a bit poor and looked indecisive, but i wont judge him on this performance alone its difficult coming on as sub Stearman - solid, but made a few errors. Looking better than last season though Elvis - just plain shizzle Cant really comment on others as i didnt see too much off them
