Fez of Mahrez Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Furthermore, on the subject of Hibs... if they had kept some of the players who have just wasted a season of their careers (Riordan and O'Connor) alongside Brown and Thomson who have just been lured by the £££ of the Old Firm, they'd have been far closer to challenging Rangers and Celtic than Hearts were or will be this season.
Milky Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Odihambo has sat on my sofa before. Bet you're really impressed
Thracian Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 I get the whole "new manager, clean slate" thing that happens in many clubs but lets not get blinkered by a players ability just because a new manager comes in. I can understand cutting some slack on some of the younger players like Levi or Stearman as they are not the finished article yet. Players like Hughes proved last season that he didn't fancy it and if you are giving people like him or even MDV ago, why not Elvis??!! I don't rate his abilities at all but he at least stuck around and somehow scored a few goals unlike some of the others!I dont get why people change tact just because we have a new manager. Im sure I can call up some old MDV threads for example to read how many people have laughed at the lad only to now think that he should feature within our squad. Madness! MA's given MDV some exposure and may be happy that he offers an option that no-one else seems likely to give him - the ability to hold the ball and lay it off in the penalty area while chipping in with a few goals. Hammond offers something else again - speed against the last man in a side where, at last, we at least have one or two players who can deliver such a pass. This at a time when, if you were a betting man, you'd say Carl Cort had no chance of making the team regularly and on top of that Fryatt has still to actually score the goals which would explain why he has such extraordinary yet patient following (unless they're press-ganged subscribers from his website! ). So we remain short of experienced and effective strikers with only the form of Odhiambo offering a minor bonus so far. Little wonder MA wants to keep his options open and to retain people until such time as he's found better alternatives. The striker situation worries me more than anything. In the Academy they had a natural partnership in Odhiambo and Billy McKay - two skilled and mobile forards who complimented one another to the tune of around 35 goakls between them, almost evenly shared, for the season. We have no such partnership. Whether Hume will complement DJ remains to be seen but such things count a lot. The reason I'd have like Fowler is that he was someone to be feared. We have no-one like that and, if the problem isn't solved a lot of excellent work could be wasted for the sake of an uncharacteristic wavering of conviction.

We have no-one like that and, if the problem isn't solved a lot of excellent work could be wasted for the sake of an uncharacteristic wavering of conviction. Fowler may have been feared through reputation but we are now in a position of having a hunger to make a reputation in DJ, Hume and Fryatt. Fowler scoring goals at this level is no gimme as he needs service, something that he would always get at Liverpool. Im not convinced he will get 50% of the service he is used too. As for MDV, yes, I have seen him have some solid games. He looked unplayable against Spurs with his holding-up of the ball and reminded me at times of Heskey when he was flying but he is limited in the air and his scoring record in his career isnt great. Hearts fans loved him at one stage but he has always seemingly had a problem with motivation because he is hit and miss. I personally as stated before think that we can get better. Elvis, similarly for me has one good attribute and many below average. He is fast as fook and at times surprises with nice and neat touches but I saw that occasionally from COG too and thought he was shite. If MDV or Elvis went elsewhere we would be lucky to get a fee for them which tells you a little about how highly they are regarded in English football. I wouldnt dismiss Carl Cort yet BTW! OK, he is injury prone and good knows what his match fitness will be like in the coming weeks but he has been a £7m player in the past and hasnt played a lot of footy in recent times so should still have some good years ahead. I still have the feeling that we will sign another striker before the season is out but if we dont, I`d be happy in having 3 good strikers in DJ, Fryatt and Hume to rotate with Odihambo playing if Cort is injured.
Foxhateram Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 You really are narrow minded aren't you, how can you slag off Scottish football when truth be told neither you or fox hate ram know the first thing about it. Oh thats right we bought Stephen Hughes and Mark De Vries ahh, that means they must all be crap up there. Maybury was fine until we started messing him about and if you want to start having a dig at Patrick Kisnorbo by all means do so, poor as you think De Vries is he scored more goals in 05/06 than anyone else on our books. Don't talk about what you don't know about. I dont! i have studied the scottish leagues for a while and as said by one man before it is improving whicbh im really impresed with, and happy about football in the UK other than England needs a lot of working doing to it, especially in Ireland and Wales, i admit im young was 17 on wednesday but i am trying to promote girls football in the southwest, i coach girls football on a friday night and the girls down there are talented VERY talented and they deserve more than they get, football in Wales especially is just like that they have good players just not a good enough set up to give these players a fair shout. Scotland is getting better and there is evidence of that in there international side, as is Northern Irleand. However there is a long way for them to go before they get well established teams and leagues like we have in England and its a strong beleif of myn that infact even Hearts would be a strugling premiership side. meaning the likes of hibs are more likely to be in the lower part of this league or top half of league 1. point made argue if you will, but we will have to agree to disagree.

I don't believe you otherwise you wouldn't be coming out with the stuff you are coming out with. but ok, we'll have to agree to disagree that Hibs, CIS Insurance Cup winners, a team that will be playing in Europe next season, are worse than S****horpe United.
Geo V Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Another thing about the Scottish league is they seem to get these International players from Central and Eastern Europe for small fees. Im sure if we tried to buy some of these lads the prices would end up tripling. BTW Scotland must be OK because Deco said that CL`s Dundee United are good. http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,1...2622943,00.html

Geo V Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Dundee United are one of the teams I would conceed are probabley around league one standerd as well. I dont know enough about them to be honest but if CL is managing them I wouldn't think that they would be improving much.

Don't talk about what you don't know about. "Maybury was fine until we started messing him around" what utter crap, he has had time to show quality in a number of positions, and didn't.. What do you know about scottish football? I know enough to know it's not up to much. Lee Naylor an average championship left back was up for footballer of the year up there! Many Wolves fans were baffled by this. Quality players up there are few and far between. Nakamura and Gordon being the first two that come to mind. Bobo Balde one of the most average defenders I have ever seen earns a living at Celtic Scotlands top club. Evidently very good. And considering CL worked wonders with hearts up there, I think its fairly clear how awful the league is. I think the fact that MDV scored more than anyone shows how bad we were and for the record in the league he didn't. Hume got 9 in the league as opposed to MDV's three, so lets put that illusion to bed shall we.

reynard Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 wow crickey not the Cis insurance cup! don't even try to defend scottish football, it's piss poor. the players we have got from scotland have all been shit, and they were supposedly quality players yp there. Dont defend the indefensible. Just like ally mauchlan, gary mac or even kevin macdonald. oh by the way Jock wallace was one of the best of our managers in recent years. or perhaps paul Dickov was poor as well seem to remember him being scottish.
reynard Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Think we should ask for a freindly against them and see about that and then thay can go play forest then wel see what league they should be in Let's see how we do vs Kilmarnock first. if forest can beat them 3-1 then presumably we should put 5 past them??
Thracian Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Let's see how we do vs Kilmarnock first.if forest can beat them 3-1 then presumably we should put 5 past them?? But football never quite works that way. And Kilmarnock might play a stronger side than against Forest.

teblin Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Let's see how we do vs Kilmarnock first.if forest can beat them 3-1 then presumably we should put 5 past them?? Forest got 3 pens!!

Guest Chocolate Teapot Posted 4 August 2007 Posted 4 August 2007 No goals all pre season yet people are still happy to see him in the team. He ain't good enough.

Hes scored one and set up 2 and has looked the business all pre-season. Your clearly living in the past. Get over it.
