Cheltenham pre-season

Recommended Posts

That's a typical OS incident report.

Fryatt certainly appeared to make an impression and his second close season goal won't do his confidence any harm.

There seems to be a big difference between the chances he got against Kilmarnock compared to Cheltenham.

I'd guess it's the difference in quality thrac?

Don't know about that, but it must be heartening for MA that he can field a team where 10 players under 22 - including 9 current or recent past members of our own Academy - played a part in beating a Division Two team 2-0. Assuming, of course, that Cheltenham used most of their first team.

I wish he hadn't played Hughes (or Maybury but Hughes' got my back up more) - it'll make him think he's still got a foot in the door when instead he should be made to train with the under 7's and help in the concourse fast food outlets on a saturday

Two second half goals handed Leicester City victory over the Robins in this evening's (July 31) behind closed doors pre-season friendly.

The match was switched from Whaddon Road to the Walker's Stadium due to the water crisis in Gloucestershire and with nobody in the ground, there was an eerie atmosphere surrounding the proceedings.

The match was similar to Saturday's contest against Wolves with Cheltenham competing well against another strong Championship side for most of the 90 minutes and being able to take some positives from a physically and technically demanding work-out.

MMichael Townsendichael Townsend (left) returned to the starting line-up after missing the Wolves match with a an ankle injury. He partnered Shane Duff in the centre of defence with Andy Gallinagh and Lee Ridley as the starting full-backs.

Teenage midfielder Aaron Ledgister started on the left with Andy Lindegaard on the right and Adam Connolly alongside John Finnigan in the centre. Craig Reid shared the striking duties with Ashley Vincent from the start. Steven Gillespie was not risked due to a slight knee injury but should be available for the weekend match at Hereford United.

Leicester fielded some of their 14 summer signings including former Ajax Amsterdam and Anderlecht midfielder Sergio Hellings, ex-Wolves, Charlton Athletic and West Ham midfielder Shaun Newton and Danish goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.

Cheltenham made a bright start to the game as they did against Wolves on Saturday.

With only six minutes played, Gallinagh delivered a good ball down the right for Vincent to chase. The forward showed a good turn of speed but was unable to find a finish to match.

LAndy Lindegaardindegaard (right) once again proved dangerous making late runs from deep positions and with 14 minutes played, he popped up in a central position to receive a pass from Finnigan before smacking a low shot from 22 yards against the base of a post.

Leicester's starting team lacked the quick, crisp passing we saw from Wolves on Saturday but they grew stronger as the first half wore on and carved out a good 15th minute chance when left-back Alan Sheehan crossed for Newton to volley wide.

Matt Fryatt produced a sharp turn and shot that had Shane Higgs stretching to push the ball wide for a corner; then huge striker Reneil Sappleton swivelled and shot high over the bar from 15 yards out.

Higgs got down to save again from Fryatt seven minutes before the break but the first half ended scoreless with Cheltenham having matched their Coca-Cola Championship opponents reasonably well.

Leicester manager Martin Allen sent on recent signing DJ Campbell for the second half. The former Birmingham City man settled into a position just behind the front two but before he had any chance to make an impression, Fryatt came up with an opening goal for the Foxes.

Only three minutes of the second half had been played when Fryatt laid a ball out to Sheehan on the left. Collecting the left-back's diagonal ball into the box, the former Walsall man let go an initial shot that bounced back off the post but he was quickly onto the rebound to beat Higgs from close in.

John Ward made his first change in the 57th minute, sending on Ben Gill and Sosthene Yao for Vincent and Ledgister. Yao's first action was to try his luck with a long-range shot that drifted wide of goal.

Higgs saved at close-range from Sappleton after right-back Alan Maybury had picked him out in the area and Leicester substitute Eric Odhiambo will feel he should have done better when put clean through but he mis-hit his shot.

A series of second half substitutions reduced the average age of both sides considerably as well as disrupting the pattern of the game and it was not until 10 minutes from the end that the next meaningful chance arrived.

That opportunity was taken by the home side who doubled their lead when substitute left-back Ryan Beswick crossed from the left and Darren Kenton, who had ventured up from defence, muscled himself in for a powerful header that gave Higgs no chance.

Ben Gill finished the game playing alongside Reid in attack and he had a good chance to pull a goal back five minutes from time. Having shown good awareness to run onto a loose ball the former Watford player found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat but Nielsen got down well to save his low drive.

LEICESTER CITY (4-4-2): Nielsen; Maybury, Kenton, Magunda (Rowe-Turner 46), Sheehan (Beswick 77); Newton (Gradel 50), Hellings (Chambers 82), Hughes, Porter (Campbell 46); Fryatt (McKay 77), Sappleton (Odhiambo 66). Sub not used: Logan (Gk)

CHELTENHAM TOWN (4-4-2): Higgs; Gallinagh, Townsend, Duff (Wylde 72), Ridley; Lindegaard, Finnigan (Bird 65), Connolly, Ledgister (Yao 57); Vincent (B.Gill 57), Reid. Subs not used: Brown (Gk), Puddy (Gk), J.Gill, Manship

Yes especially after Saturday's display when he used a combination of all his best players and didn't manage a single shot on target against a mediocre Scottish team!

We're gonna win the league...we're gonna win the league...and now do you believe us...and now d...

Maybe not.

I've no idea who played well or badly, what role people had or how good/bad the opposition were.

By George I think you've got it. :appl:

Now we can start on "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain"

We look pretty good from the highlights, so nice interplay. Fryatt looked good.

Odhiambo's miss is probably one of the worst I have ever, ever seen, hahaha

Lovely 1-2 by Fryatt off the post for his goal aswell.
