Kelly delighted to be at Preston

TH1_88200729robkelly.JPG Rob Kelly is delighted to be involved at North End

By Brian Ellis Rob Kelly insists he is not bitter after being sacked as Leicester boss in April. But you can bet no one will be sporting a broader grin if Preston North End take six points from the Leicester City this season.

By general consensus, Kelly was harshly treated at the Walkers Stadium after 15 months at the helm.

He rescued the club as it teetered on the brink of League One, but then paid the price for not mounting a miraculous turn-around the following season.

"I was disappointed, of course I was," said Preston's new assistant manager. "But that's in the past now.

"I have got no ill-feelings towards them, it is a smashing club.

"The thing is, my time was up there – it was decided my time was up there.

"I wish them well, apart from when we meet them twice this season. I would love to take six points off them.

"Otherwise, good luck to them. I am not bitter in the least."

Leicester's loss is North End's gain with Kelly replacing namesake David Kelly as No.2 at Deepdale.

The fact he was only out of work less than seven weeks – and some of that the summer holidays – tells its own story.

North End manager Paul Simpson is confident he has made his best signing since arriving at the club.

And Kelly himself is thrilled to be joining forces with a man who he views as a top-class operator.

"This club has a progressive manager and that is something that appealed to me," he told the Evening Post.

"When Paul asked me to come here I was delighted to get the opportunity.

"I hadn't been out of work very long and so to get this chance is tremendous for me.

"I was delighted to come here and be part of it.

"What do I bring to the club? Well, probably just a slightly different perspective.

"I have done the manager's job and seen the problems and some of the things that Paul will have encountered.

"I have been in a similar position to him, although he has done it a lot longer than I did.

"But hopefully I can add something, particularly on the training pitch and in matches.

"Paul has got a good staff around him with Billy Barr, Dave Timmins and the medical staff. Hopefully I can just add to that really."

Kelly is unperturbed by taking the step down from manager to assistant.

"I like coaching – that's the bottom line. I have been brought here to coach and I enjoy working with players who, individually and as a group, want to improve.

"At no age do you stop wanting to get better, wanting to improve and move forward. A big thing about coming here is that Preston is a

traditional club. It has got a great tradition.

"Yet they are trying to develop the ground and move that forward. They have plans for the training ground.

"So the club, despite its tradition, is still looking to move forward and be progressive.

"That appealed to me. This is a good club to be part of."

Kelly's first impressions of the squad during pre-season training are good, although he admits: "It isn't the biggest squad in the Championship.

"I have found out over the last couple of seasons that it is probably the toughest league.

"We don't have a squad as big as some of the other clubs in this division, who might have 30 to 35 players.

"But what we do have is good quality, good types and everyone wants to move forward and get better."

Joining Preston means a return to the North West, where Kelly and his family lived while he worked at Blackburn Rovers' Academy.

"It's good to be back here," he said. "And I don't just mean the football side.

"I like this part of the world, I enjoyed living here. It's a good place to live.

"The pace of life is probably slightly less hectic. People seem to have a bit more time for each other.

"We were settled up here before we left. We enjoyed our time in the Midlands, but it is genuinely good to be back."

I can't believe how one-sided and biased that reporter is. Let a Leicester fan write it and it will be totally different. I mean our loss is their gain  We sacked him fgs, he didn't resign!

Also, when PNE come to the Walker's will there be any songs ridiculing RK at all?

Edit: Yeh, good luck to him and all that because he did do ok for us, just he wasn't amibitious enough (proved by the point he'd rather take an Assistant Manager's job than wait for a Manager vancancy to come about). Take 6 points off us? As if lol

Good luck to him, he could have been bitter and slagged us off but he didn't. He did his best here with limited resources, it just didn't work out.

Kelly was a fooking twat.

A total Noddy in the managers seat; no idea about tactics, training, discipline or scouting decent players.

Screw him.

That reporter is a fvcking nobsack I guess that when he says "failed to mount a miraculous turn around" he meant staying up for a second season running. :@

I like the guy as a person but he was clueless as a manager.

What an absolute **** Rob Kelly is the worst manager in over a generation and he was harshly treated. He got mollycoddled by the happy clappers and never got close the the abuse he deserved for being such a dithering, wimpy f'ckchops.

He has zero footballing ability as a coach let alone a manager and yet pulled 250k for last season plus a pay off. I hope PNE go down, not because I dislike them but because of Rob Kelly.

Useless piece of second hand bog rag.

Exactly and that was evident from the start.

...where we've already started to redouble our efforts

He's got no reason to feel hard done by. Fair enough he had no money and loads of fans turned against him but he wasnt good enough and was taking us down.

I wouldnt be surprised if he does ok with Preston.

Leave him alone, yer bastards. :o

Granted, he wasn't managerial material, but some have short memories. Irrespective of what is said about Kelly, he still was able to turnaround a 6 game losing streak (at a time when we were 2 points adrift of safety) and keep us up comfortably. I'm sure Barton will counter that with another one of his Kelly diatribes.

Kelly is such a prat really. That job was a huge break for him, it was his big chance to forge a career in management. He wasted it with his defensive crap.

Kelly didn't do it - it was just "change" that inspired the players to dig a little deeper. The act of changing things works in all work environments in the short term but has to be managed for long term benefits - We all saw what management he was capable of over a prolonged period of time.

He gains credit from some of you for something that was not of his making.

Again, correct.

Daggers knows the score on this, folks.

Listen to him.

That's all well and good in hindsight but I think Kelly's approach appealed to our players at the time, in contrast with Levein. He gave them a bit more freedom and tried to take the pressure off. Obviously this laissez-faire approach didn't fare so well when applied to preparation for a full season but it was ideal to get us out of trouble the season before last. I think we should be big enough to give credit where its due because I think some people forget just how pathetic we were in the last few weeks of Levein's management.
