Thracian Posted 3 October 2007 Posted 3 October 2007 Interesting story on the BBC football website concerning our Gareth. Northern Ireland defender Gareth McAuley may quit international football after being left out of the squad to face Sweden on 17 October. "I'll see this campaign out and after that I'll be thinking of the future," said the Leicester City player. "If I'm going away for 10 days and I am not being involved it frustrates me and it knocks your confidence a bit." Bristol City winger Ivan Sproule is also considering his future with NI after failing to play in recent games. Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington phoned the 27-year-old at the weekend to break the news that he is not in the panel for the Euro 2008 qualifier in Stockholm. "It's something I'm not very happy about but I've just got to take it on the chin," added McAuley. "He's cut the squad back and myself and a couple of other lads are disappointed. "He just said to keep doing what you are doing at your club and you will get a chance. "It's very frustrating, especially after watching the performance against Latvia. "He said he was going to make changes but I didn't even make the bench for the second game (in Iceland)." "It is very hard going away for 10 days, rushing back and having no preparation for club games, which is not the best for Leicester." McAuley, who made his Northern Ireland debut against Germany two years ago, captained City in Tuesday night's scoreless draw with Wolves.
Geo V Posted 3 October 2007 Posted 3 October 2007 I dont see anything wrong with what he is saying, especially when he has a fight on his hands with Kisnorbo and N`Gotty to start for us in a back 4. So many players these days retire early for one reason or another and I personally and selfishly would prefer him to stay here without the risk of getting injured.

But he's right, he's good enough to play regualarly for Northern Ireland, even more so when he's being kept out by a full back.
Guest Posted 3 October 2007 Posted 3 October 2007 These days it's club over country in most cases. After all, who pays the wages, and let's face it, there's little playing for pride.
Ric Flair Posted 4 October 2007 Posted 4 October 2007 What's weird is he was getting more games for Northern Ireland when he was at Lincoln than he has ever got since he's come to us and proved himself at a higher level. Odd.
Thracian Posted 9 October 2007 Author Posted 9 October 2007 Whether he meant it or not - the subtle pressure seems to have paid off! ================================================= From the OS: Gareth McAuley has been called up to the Northern Ireland squad for their Euro 2008 qualifier against Sweden at the Rasunda Stadium, Stockholm on Wednesday, October 17. The defender had initially been placed on standby, but following the weekend's games, received the call from Nigel Worthington. He will join-up with the squad on Saturday. Meanwhile, McAuley has been named in the Championship's Team of the Week after netting City's first goal in their 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday whilst also helping keep The Owls at bay at the other end.

Worthington is fickle, a goal and a clean sheet and suddenly he's Dom Perignon!!
Manwell Pablo Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 Worthington is fickle, a goal and a clean sheet and suddenly he's Dom Perignon!! Feel sorry for NI, Worthington has ruined them.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 Worthington is fickle, a goal and a clean sheet and suddenly he's Dom Perignon!! I can't believe he can't get in the France team.
Bert Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 Who does NI have playing CB for them anyway? Chris Barid and Jonny Evans i think.
RowlattsFox Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 Think Aaron Hughes is first choice, alongside Baird.
BigGibbo Posted 10 October 2007 Posted 10 October 2007 Feel sorry for NI, Worthington has ruined them. Don't it could of been us
Jimmy Posted 10 October 2007 Posted 10 October 2007 Feel sorry for NI, Worthington has ruined them. yeah he has dropped half their defence that got them into a decent position to qualify, must piss McAuley off that an average right back is being played at centre half

Geo V Posted 11 October 2007 Posted 11 October 2007 What back 4? if we ever revert to it for home games! (Please dear god, 442 at home and attack, attack, attack!)
Asha Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 Nigel Worthington the manager, he might have been impressed with the performances last season...
Milky Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 Nigel Worthington the manager, he might have been impressed with the performances last season... So, why did Nigel leave him out of the last few squads then?
Nationwider Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 Congratulations to Gareth McAuley on his first competitive start for Norn Iron.
Jimmy Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 He' playing Right Back with Aaron Hughes and Steve Cragan at CB wtf?
dandannieldanok Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 I know this isn't relevant to McAuley but Kishishev has scored an own goal playing for bulgaria
The Reverend Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 1-1 draw against Sweden with Big Mac in the side. Not a bad result at all. Well done Big Mac.
