Denim Jeans - a fashion enigma

Recommended Posts

They've been going for at least 50 years, they're worn by every age group 9 months to 90, by all shapes and sizes. by both sexes and those in between, by all classes the rich the poor. They come in many disguises, stretchy, worn, torn, adorned flaired etc.

I recognise that the pigeon holing of fashions for different groups /classes has eroded but denim jeans goes further than that and defies all the historical logic of fashion.

Fashions tend to come and go, some returning in different guises but denim jeans have never really bean away. When I first started wearing them in the early 60's it was frowned up to wear them on sunday, now they are accepted in many areas, I even seen them worn at a wedding.

Traditionally you wouldn't see young people say 17 to 25 in anything worn by someone older, I guess that has stretched over time to include the 25+'s.

But denim jeans are worn by babies and grandmas FFS so how come the youth of today are still wearing them , not just occasionally but virtually all the time?

Can I just point out, I'm starting a crusade. The next MALE little willy puller I see sporting tight, hip hugging, thigh accentuating jeans - is going to get set on fire. You've been warned.

Baggy is best!

I'm currently loving my GAP Carpenter/workman jeans... baggy and a nice hue of darkish-faded indigo blue!!!

Because a good pair are smart, ultra laid back and so versatile. They're suited to so many things you might have to or want to do in a day.

I've long sacificed fashion for comfort but have been years trying to find a pair of jeans that really fit. Because jeans that don't fit look ghastly and I'm afraid any pair of trousers I had to keep continually pulling up from the back every time I bent down would be ditched the moment I got home.

Some hang so low off people's backsides they look more like a continence aid than a pair of trousers but, comfortably close fitting and complimented by a good leather belt, and they're the business.

My guess is they'll still be popular 50 years from now.

Haha. My jeans couldn't be further from smart, really. I walk on the heels of them so they're a bit of a scraggy mess at the bottom.
