Leicester manager Ian Holloway hopes to beat Derby and Norwich to the signature of Sunderland midfielder Graham Kavanagh. (Daily Star)

SUNDERLAND midfielder Graham Kavanagh is reported to be at the centre of a three-way tug of war.

Leicester manager Ian Holloway hopes to beat Derby and Norwich to the signature of the Irishman, according to today's Daily Star.

The 34-year-old has not figured in the Black Cats' first team this season.

And with competition for places fierce in Roy Keane's midfield, it looks certain the former Wigan, Cardiff, Stoke and Middlesbrough playmaker will be allowed to leave in January.

Sheffield Wednesday, where he spent a successful month on loan in a bid to regain match fitness, would also be interested in signing him permanently, but are strapped for cash.

kavanagh yes 3 years ago

connolly was crap here apart from his last 10 games!!

But there's no denying he's a top championship quality striker. Him and Hume up front...could be a working partnership :dunno:

I'd take both of them on.

Connolly doesn't seem to play much at Sunderland, and he scored on a consistant basis. Sign him up.

And Kavanagh is a good player too. He'll sort out this midfield, and has the leadership qualities, which Clemence is lacking.

Wasn't Kavanagh on loan at Sheff Wednesday this year, in fact didn't he play against us? Seem to remember he didn't look all that.

Connolly would still score goals but he's 30, hope we aren't going to be paying to much for these players if we buy them.

Are they even much of an an improvement? I think desperation is clouding some minds!

Doesn't matter if they are an improvement or not, what matters is can Holloway get them playing well for us. If you digest some of the mediocre players that Holloway had at Plymouth and look at where they are in the table, it just goes to show that quality isn't the be all and end all at this level. I mean, Collins John is far too good for this level, he should be tearing it up, but he's not for some reason or other.

Holloway has made his name as a manager by getting the best out of players, players that might not appear to be technically brilliant any longer. Barry Hayles, Paul Furlong and Lilian Nalis springing to mind. Had we signed any of those in the past year or two, we'd have been un-impressed to say the least but they did the business for Holloway because he struck some sort of rapport with them. He's got to do that here and we have to back the players he brings in, irrespective of whether they don't appear to be any improvement on some of the shit boxes we already have.

So how come he can't seemingly get any of the current squad playing to their ability never mind above it, they're all, by his own admission not performing when at least some of them did under Megson, Allen, Worthington and even Kelly.

Lack of confidence, too much distruption with manager changes. The players dont know if they are staying, playing or wasting thier time.

In any team you can 'carry' 2 maybe even 3 players but we are having Fulop and Hume carry the other 9 most of the time. Under Megson the performances were crap although we picked up points, I would put that down to the defensive style that Megson played and the fact that we were playing more defenders than the opposition!!!

I would very much doubt that every player that started against Hull will be sold or replaced in January but the injection of a few confident anthusiastic and fresh players will certainly help those that remain.

Not sure about either of these. Would have taken Kavanagh i couple of years ago, but how old is now? Must be getting on and not sure what he could add, maybe a bit more fight and attitude in middle but hardly going to have massive impact. Connolly as well, not sure he could add that much. But then again he is a natural finisher and in the right team could be handy, I would prefer to see him on a loan deal, Kavanagh too actually and see how they go. Really don't want to be signing players on 2 year contracts and then being lumbered with them, think we've learnt our lessons there....I hope.

I think I'd take these two nicely here to be honest.

Although Connolly wasn't exactly brilliant when he was here, and he was overrated by some, I think he's better than what we have. If we could get him for the right price he'd be a decent signing.

Also Kavanagh would fit in nicely. We are desperate for some quality in midfield and he's the sort of player who can provide just that.

That's a damn good question and something that worries me. I've not been overly impressed with Holloway's impact so far, but it's far too early for me to question whether he's capable of the task ahead of him. He's classed as a motivator, yet if anything he's managed to de-motivate some of them, Clemence being one of them.

There's big problems here, I hope at a minimum he can replicate the togetherness he got at QPR and Plymouth when he brings in some players. I would be tempted to ship in excess (not the band) of 15 players out as soon as possible. I know wholesale changes is what's helped cause the shite we're in, but I don't see a future for so many players we have in the squad right now apart from about 3 or 4 players excluding the youth players.

I've not give up on him yet but there needs to be some immediate improvement, never mind January. He needs to get out his jar of motivation elixir or whatever he uses and start polishing a few broken minds or we're buggered. No more excuses, there should be sufficient 'talent' amongst the current squad to start picking up some points they've done it before they should be able/capable of still doing that.

I would take Kavanagh on loan til the end of the season. He's getting on a bit but a loan spell till the end of the season would benefit him and us as well.

We've got to get him just for the grey quiff...

Didnt Sheffield Wednesday's form vastly improve when Kavanagh joined them? May have just been a conincidence but I find it strange that people seem to be judging him based on one game against us.

As for Connolly, he is a good finisher, but he needs the chances and at the moment we dont create enough. He would be a decent signing if we sort our midfield out.
