Response to Davie G's thread on contributing to the Forum upgrade

Posted in The Leicester City Forum because thats where i saw the sticky...:

I think it might help mark to have a rough idea on what sort of donations might be coming in, although i am sure he would appreciate any donation folks so dont let that stop you from making a random donation if thats what you want to do!!

But i was wondering if we could get a list, even if its just ten people who would be able to donate £3 a month for the rest of the year. that would guarentee mark an income to help pay for this website of £30 a month!

Instead of wondering if you can afford a £20 donation or not, just make it somthing simple, small and regular. If we have people committed to doing that for a whole 12 months Then i think it could really Help.

Please only add your name to the list if you can definately have the money and memory to make it a regular small donation!! that Mark could rely on coming in

£3 a month!!! come on guys!!!!

( i know, i am starting to sound like one of those charity adverts now! lol )

So i will start it off.

If anyone doesn't have a Paypal account but would like to donate though a credit/debit card, I will gladly process the payment.

EDIT: Oh I see I'm just a big nob. You don't need a Paypal account to pay by card.

I've contributed via Paypal, been meaning to do it for months now (oops) and this gave me a reminder. Only thing is I think I used an old card and only noticed once I'd clicked to finalise the payment. Can you let me know if there's a problem Mark? Will keep checking my emails to see if it's been rejected.

I donated £5 during the holidays; I'd like to think that it was my fiver that just gave Mark enough money to upgrade servers :yesyes:

...but I'm sure it wasn't.

I have spent about £500 through the shopping link and will carry on spending a fortune every month not sure how much it generates but I sure it all adds up at the end

Good idea as its unfair that one person gets the bump on the costs whilst hundreds get the enjoyment.

I`ll make a contribution of a few quid soon and I hope everyone else helps out. ;)

Please could someone direct me to the threads about

a) The running costs

and

b) The new server

as I appear to have missed both.

Will contribute - and thankyou Mark.

The thread on the running costs and new server is the announcement by davieG on the Leicester City Forum (though he quite rightly doesn't give any figures)

To make a payment, click Paypal logo at foot of every thread (Not actually click every single one, but every thread has one ;) )

Click/kerching! - ty Mark

I bet even with the donations, Mark is left with a fairly large bill. Perhaps publishing the figures might have encouraged more donations?

Anyway, even so, I shall do a donation! :)

Perhaps publishing a three volume set (The Collected Works of FT, and antholgy of Greatest Posts and The Beginners Guide to Posting on FT) in time for Easter might recoup a windfall of nesteggs?

I'm not sure why the running costs have to be a secret? Running a forum on open source software, on a shared open source platform should not cost very much (like 10-20 quid a month with a generous amount of bandwidth) - unless a "self hosting" solution is in place.

Don't get me wrong I have no "i'm not grateful" thoughts - I'm just thinking if I knew the actual cost I would be more likely to contribute and work my contribution based on the actual cost (and the fact that probably only 5-10% max would contribute).

Let's do it privately, cut FT out of the loop and make a small fortune, swanning off to live in the Maldives.

Then in 2 weeks time we'll come back with our tai... cocks between our legs, cap in hand, begging for more money.

GO!

How about a FT fundraiser or two?

Maybe a members only lottery thingy where everyone slings in a fiver and if we get 100 entrants, the winner gets a season ticket for next season and the remaining money goes to FT??

Maybe the next footy get-together everyone can do some kind of sponsorship thing as well? I don't know but there must be a few ways of raising a pound or two for the forum?
