Plymouth Pete Posted 28 January 2008 Posted 28 January 2008 Well done, Palace are a hard team to beat at the moment, results like this have to be gound out, Sir Barrington is a short term solution to your problems, moving in the right direction.

Hes gone down pretty well so far... Good job were hitting form with you lot around the corner
Fox You Forest Posted 28 January 2008 Posted 28 January 2008 He was shit tonight. How was he man of the match? Useless. I'd have had him off for DJ Campbell and Hume off for Bori, to be honest. Not that Zsolt was stunning but he was better than both of those two.I hope we don't have some "chosen men" situation here where Hayles can't do a thing wrong. Bori added a real touch of class when he came on, I thought - why is Holloway sticking a "square peg in a round hole" in Iain Hume when he could just have well have had him up front with Howard from the start? I don't care if he scored, have some realism and perspective and look at the bigger picture. Do you REALLY want Howard and Hayles starting every game up top? I agree with the bori part he looked quality when he came on, Hayles is 35 im pretty sure he wont be starting every game even if he wants too. I feel a little sorry for Humey
RowlattsFox Posted 28 January 2008 Posted 28 January 2008 I thought Hayles was ok tonight, not a man of the match performance by any means but certainly wasnt awful, He was more threatening then Howard. I was suprised to see him start and even more suprised that he stayed on when the subs came on.
Finnegan Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 I thought he'd focked it up tbh. Exactly. Had he had an inch or two less luck and it hit the frame of the goal, he'd have 4s from everyone and we'd be bemoaning how clueless he looked.
Bert Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 Exactly. Had he had an inch or two less luck and it hit the frame of the goal, he'd have 4s from everyone and we'd be bemoaning how clueless he looked. I still would've gave him a 7 if he'd not scored.

Thracian Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 Hayles' winner was one of the ugliest goals you'll ever see but so what? He got into the six yard box and showed enough instinct to deflect an awkward ball into the net. From time to time I've mentioned an old centre-forward of mine - Frank Sheard. He re-defined the word ugly when it came to goals. He was a smoker who wasn't ever quick but he was always around. The ball bounced off everything, his heel, the back of his head, his knee but each year he managed 20-odd goals a season. Hayles is that kind. He might not look like a thoroughbred but he's a godsend in football - a man who can be in the right place at the right time and see the ball into the net. It's a vital quality.
Ultra Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 Hes gone down pretty well so far... Good job were hitting form with you lot around the corner And the "law of the ex" means he's nailed to score AGAIN in the next home game..

Bazza worked his socks off and used his strength well at times, but he's not suited to playing with Howard and vice versa. Both are targetmen, Bazza more in the hold up sense. Playing those two upfront meant that Palace just played a really high defensive line and we struggled to take control. It has be one or the other to start. You could see how Campbell made a difference with his pace and mobility - Palace backed off us a little and we got more of the ball.

Hayles played well and what a goal , but i would like to see Howard and DJ upfront. I think Howards knock ons will be perfect for a bloody quick DJ to run onto, it's a shame he didnt put that chance away last night because he'd be buzzing right now if he had. DJ will bag a few from now until the end of the season, he if he keeps that pace and reading the game like he did for the last ten last night. Howard flick on's to DJ are the way forward, it will be like Owen and Heskey, or Ferdinand and Dickov. Good times are on their way people!!
Manwell Pablo Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 Completely agree. Hayles was shite. Bit stunned at some of the ratings he's getting. I think he's quite amusing, totally shit, old, should of been taken off, but funny. Theres something increadibly funny about shouting "For ****s sake Barry" and such like phrases at him. He always has some stupid look on his face, he absloutley hilariously completley misjudged a Mattock throw in, failed to get the flick on and then blamed Mattock for taking a perfectly good throw as he knew the 17 year old wouldn't argue with the oldest member of the team. Then he goes and spuffs the ball into the net off his shin pad and proceeds to pull out one of the crappest celebrations I have ever seen. The mans comical. Also say what you llike about him he did score and he was better than Howard.
kevinwpratt Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 I thought he was below par, granted he "ran his socks off" and is "fit for his age" but my plan is to go home tonight and watch the game again on Sky plus because unless i was watching a different game there were several times he miscontrolled it to a palace player and every time he was in the left hand corner it was obvious he was gonna put his back to the defender get the ball back onto his right foot and try and cross it.... I know some will say this is what he is meant to do and i would agree to a certain extent but it made him look like a one trick pony Of course if after watching it again i am wrong i will be manly enough to admit it....

I can see why Holloway likes him so much though and he is gradually winning me over with his silly expressions, rubbish goals and rubbish celebrations.
orod Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 i think hes bollox to be honest. good on him for getting the goal but i thought he played shite and i dont think hel be great for us. look at craig hignett - he scored for us and got us a point against arsenal when they were the best team in the world but he was still shite and we still got rid of him. the goal was a fluke. hume was alright in midfield but howard missed a few chances wer still lacking a quality striker and im worried wel miss out on the playoffs cus of it
morris1234 Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 i can see why holloway likes him, he doesnt stop trying and tbh hes quick for a player of his age!

Keep up the good work

People seem to forget.. this is the championship we are in now not the premier league.. We wont get expensive strikers who can do every trick in the book.. we need a mix, some skill and some power strength and determination... Hayles comes under the second category who are of equal importance in this division to the first..
Babylon Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 I actually thought he played ok, held it up ok and really got stuck in. My only gripe was he and Howard were usually in the same place because they are both target men.

SPF07 Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 I have to say extremely happy after result last night however, also have to say Hayles is rubbish! definatly Hume or DJ ahead of him for me
Simi Posted 29 January 2008 Posted 29 January 2008 I think opinions are divided on Hayles because people have different expectations of what they expect from a striker. Hayles does exactly what he's on the pitch to do, hold the ball up, pass it on and score. 2 goals in 4 now, no doubt he could of had more as well. However, I don't feel he's the man we need to partner Howard up front. We've seen last night and in the past what DJ can do when he gets the proper service, with Howard next to him, I think he'd thrive upon that. Hayles is doing fine for now though.
