Monk Posted 4 February 2008 Posted 4 February 2008 OK so next thursday it's that time of year again. I've been seeing this american girl for a few months and want to look like I'm making an effort, but without forking out money in the way that Peter Taylor did for Ade. Bearing in mind I'm in London, anyone got any ideas? JTB? I'm sure you're a mast of all things Londonesque. Gaucho? What do you reckon?

lookwhaticando Posted 4 February 2008 Posted 4 February 2008 A colleague of mine has a boyfriend who's adamant that Valentines Day is actually February 21st. She, on the other hand, is confident that she'll be single come the 15th.
James. Posted 4 February 2008 Posted 4 February 2008 OK so next thursday it's that time of year again. Bearing in mind I'm in London, anyone got any ideas?JTB? I'm sure you're a mast of all things Londonesque. Gaucho? What do you reckon? I'm a big fan of Gaucho but it isn't particularly cheap. And in my experience it's a bit of a bloke place to go - let's see who can eat the biggest, rarest slab of Argentinian beef. Meal for two with wine - probably £40 a head. Very, very tasty though (try the sweetcorn parcels, they're not on the menu but they'll do them if you ask!). The Canary Whaf one is the best I've been to although that area of London isn't exactly the most romantic! The Oxo Tower is very nice. Took the lady to the Brasserie. Resident piano and bass player, great views, outdoor terrace, again not that cheap but I'd say more suitable for Valentines day. Whether you can get a table still I'm not sure. Hmm apart from that there's a very swanky place off Bethnal Green Road near Liverpool Street called Les Trois Garcons. Pricey but very posh and fantastic decor (you feel like you're in some kind of Dali painting). There's some very nice places on Upper Street in Angel too including a great Turkish place called Gallipoli. Very intimate with tasty food. I've heard good things about the Blue Elephant in Fulham. Thai place with a miniature jungle setting inside. I'll keep thinking and let you know of any more... assuming you're after restaurants and not something a little different...
Monk Posted 4 February 2008 Author Posted 4 February 2008 Good man I will look into those thank you. Oxo Tower sounds good.
Guest Posted 4 February 2008 Posted 4 February 2008 Valentine's is a rip off. If you want to make an impression, you want to invite her over, create an 'ambiance' with lots of candles, cook her a nice meal, served with a good bottle of wine. That would certainly go down better with me than being crammed into a restaurant, being forced to choose off an overpriced set menu, and being told to hurry up so the next poor victims can have the table.

Lisa makes a good point. The Valentine's day menu in the Brasserie section of the Oxo Tower is £110 per head!! Ouch. At the other end of the scale is Tayyabs which is meant to be one of the best Indian restaurants in London. It's cheap, you take your own alcohol and it's a proper authentic Benagli East End experience. It's just behind the main road in Whitechapel, near the hospital... I'm going to try and get a table there I reckon. Can't be arsed to cook myself. http://www.tayyabs.co.uk/

Valentines Day is a rip off. End of. And extremely over-rated too.
James. Posted 4 February 2008 Posted 4 February 2008 "...but if you loved me..." I'm still living off the brownie points earned when I took her to New York in February 2004. £110 per head? No f**king chance sweetheart.

Master Fox Posted 4 February 2008 Posted 4 February 2008 For £110 you could go and get a decent prosie for an hour and get a proper shag!!
Dr The Singh Posted 4 February 2008 Posted 4 February 2008 For £110 you could go and get a decent prosie for an hour and get a proper shag!! Is that what you spend the £110.00 I lent you!!!

Thats what I do for the wife now. Last time we went out for Valentines "crammed into a restaurant, being forced to choose off an overpriced set menu, and being told to hurry up so the next poor victims can have the table" that happened. Food is always poor too, like Mothering Sunday too. Best thing is impress her with your cunnylingus culinary skills
Monk Posted 4 February 2008 Author Posted 4 February 2008 http://www.tayyabs.co.uk/ Tayyabs is awesome, I took her there last week. Best curry in London by a bengali mile.
Master Fox Posted 4 February 2008 Posted 4 February 2008 Is that what you spend the £110.00 I lent you!!! I just went for a half hour session, and then used the rest to buy a new England shirt. I'll pay you back, i promise!!

Bert Posted 4 February 2008 Posted 4 February 2008 Why should you need a certain day to show your love for someone? Valentines day is nice if you have a partner and they spoil you and you spoil them (especially if that's what you both like), although i think it's just a day where retailers can make a bit more money. Sometimes, the smaller, less expensive things (Night in with a meal dvd etc, simply because you can just be together the two of you) can mean a lot more than all the fuss some people go to. I think some people take it a bit too far to be honest.
