Am I missing something, or has she only lost one match at slam level thus far, and two below that?

Lost at Wimbledon 3 times. Q1 twice and round 4 this year…

I wouldn't count qualifiers as Grand Slam level loses. In the main draw she's lost once and then she pulled out rather than losing.

This is slightly off topic but someone in a newspaper thread mentioned Maureen Connoly. Won 9 majors but had to retire at the age of 19!

"Maureen Catherine Connolly Brinker (née Connolly; September 17, 1934 – June 21, 1969), known as "Little Mo", was an American tennis player, the winner of nine major singles titles in the early 1950s. In 1953, she became the first woman to win a Grand Slam (all four major tournaments during the same calendar year). She is also the only player in history to win a title without losing a set at all four major championships. The following year, in July 1954, a horseback riding accident seriously injured her right leg and ended her competitive tennis career at age 19." (wiki)

Well done channel 4, but I find it odd that amazon let this happen. Surely no bigger pull for potential subscribers than being the only place to see such a monumental occasion. It basically saying you can miss the rest, but when the big moment arrives we're happy to give up exclusive coverage.

First UK woman in a majors final since 1977. First qualifier to reach US open final. This is such a rare event that it's unlikely to reoccur in our lifetimes. Plus it's good PR for amazon. Undoubtedly some people are more likely to shop with them so profits will be up.

I get that, but it also just says no point in subscribing, you'll be able to see the truly big moments elsewhere anyway.

Also not good PR for to the people who actually paid for the service to find that they could watch this without stumping up the money.

Depends on ones prospective lifetime!

She has ALL the credentials to become a national icon - and that may have an effect on those kids who will idolise her and wish to emulate her.

She's not necessarily that much better than Wade was (she is far better athletically), but the women's game has changed radically in the intervening fifty years. To watch the lady players (they were ladies back then)  of that era is like watching a genteel Sunday afternoon knock-about.

The eastern Europeans have mainly been responsible for this - realising it was a way to make a good living. Whether British kids have that drive is debatable and whether the LTA is a fit-for-purpose governing body is also debatable, but as a rôle model could there be any better than Emma?

I get it. I don't like wasting money either.

She is actually the first qualifier, man or woman, to make the final of any grand slam since the open era started in 1968. If she wins it will one of the greatest ever sport's stories, not just tennis.

Feeling nervous already....  :frantics:

I have a confession to make: tennis is my first love, not footy - sorry...  (My Mum could have a been a pro tennis player, but decided otherwise - she's still really good at it though, and playing with her I think is why I wasn't a bad goalkeeper, even if I was never the best at it, anyway.)

Anyone else pretty excited about this? She's Leicester City 2015-16 and it's amazing.

I was thinking of it like that earlier. Obviously it won't top Leicester winning the league, and even to this day, if I say "Leicester won the league" to myself and actually think about it, it's still never really sank in. It's still utterly ridiculous. I feel the same about this, it'll never really sink in what's happened, it's utterly ridiculous this has happen, and even more so if she wins.
