Batman: The Dark Knight

I've read that Johnny Depp and David Tennant would both fancy a crack at playing Riddler, although the source for this is wikipedia, so probably untrue. If it is true though, I think both would be well suited to the role, and I would like to see Tennant take on something bigger as he has probably outgrown his current role.

I would hope not to be honest. I think Ledger made the character his own, and even if his successor was to be a show stealer the probable lack of consistency in the character would disappoint. I wasn't expecting such a stong performance, not having been Ledger's biggest fan prior to seeing this.

Daniel Day Lewis has been rumoured as another Jack. Normally I think he'd be a great Joker but not to succeed Ledger tbh.

Sure there'll be another film though.

I can't help rewatching the magic trick with the pencil.

The awe the joker had really was immense.

Just got back from seeing it and was very impressed. Never been a fan of Ledger's but that was the best performance I've seen in ages!!

Went to see it day before yesterday. Very impressed with it, had my interest the whole time and Ledger was fantastic.

Great film.

I don't think I could cope if David Tennant ends up being The Riddler. Surely that's just some Dr Who nut pissing around on Wikipedia?

Rumours abound that Good old Jonny Depp might be the Riddler... I for one would approve!

After a meagre two weeks since the last post, I went to see it in Zurich yesterday. 8.30 screening, both shows (one in English, one in German) sold out. Luckily, had two seats reserved for me and a mate of mine from Vancouver.

I think it's worth the hype. Although it's too long a movie with too many secondary characters with little screen presence (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman). Why the Scarecrow is introduced for two minutes in the beginning, I don't know - it doesn't make sense. And that Hong Kong bookie sideplot wasn't really necessary, was it? Christian Bale's husky Batman voice is annoying. And Two-Face is only present for a short duration of the movie - and I didn't like his CGI face. What saves this one from being overly complicated and boring is the Joker aka Heath Ledger. He outshines everyone.

Whether you like comic book adaptations or not, admit it, this is the performance of a lifetime and can surely compete with the likes of Brando, Dean, Pacino, Hopkins or De Niro. I also think Ledger's Joker to be a better adaptation than Nicholson's in the first Batman. Very erratic, unpredictable, mean, in favour of anarchy and with a definite nihilist touch. There were times where Ledger made me laugh - the scene where he comes out of the hospital, dressed like a nurse, for instance.

I wish the makers had put the emphasis on a more personal chaos vs. order duel between Ledger and Bale, like in a modern Western, rather than making it overly complicated. That'd have been by far more intriguing.

Still, "The Dark Knight" offers a very good cinematography, fitting soundtrack, a subversive political message and an interesting look at today's state of things. There are certainly touches of criticism aimed at today's Western society and politics.

I've not actually seen the Dark Knight. But it seems everyone seems to be tossing off over heath Ledger as the Joker.

I just want to ask one serious question. Would he have been hailed as a God like he pretty much has been had not died? Now this is a serious question, i'm not saying he doesnt deserve all the praise (i couldnt possibley comment anyway as i havent seen it), but it does seem a bit over the top for me. Someone tell me otherwise.

Tough one to answer. Probably yes and no.

I think only a handful of people could've predicted that Ledger would play the Joker in the first place. Before that, he was merely more than a handsome-ish mother-in-law's wet dream. I believe he must've had a lot of fun fleshing out this character and toying around with manners and behaviour patterns. No one has done that before and yes, the Joker's probably every actors dream come true, because it's such an unpredictable character, you can pretty much add and subtract whatever you want.

You should go and see it. You will not see a better film this year.

People rave about the disappearing pencil act, but the part when the Joker takes on the role of a hospital nurse had me in stitches.

The film definately needs to be watched twice though. There's so much going on and it's really hard to take in first time round. A second viewing would probably make "the ending" more convincing rather than an excuse to make a third in the franchise.

The plan set out was always to make a trilogy anyway.

An instant classic and the genius that is Nolan has his name virtually down as a legend now

Batman contuines to be a tormented soul who is tormented even further by insane yet smart as fook Joker. A pretty much cat and mouse game between them two with Dent the Two Face being a unluckly pawn

All cast played and graced their part very well and their roles are very realastic apart from The Joker ( he could be without all of that alter ego malarky)

Fully recommended and I will buy the DVD when it comes out

Just got back from the cinema. It's alright but I don't know what everybody is creaming themselves about. I didn't care about any of the characters, I didn't find Heath Ledger's performance especially brilliant and the love interest was a bit of a minger.

Tbh imo the only Batman film that lived up to the hype was the Val Kilmer one.

Then you're opinion doesn't count. ;):P

Certainly my film of the year so far.

I can understand why there has been so much made out of it, it is a shame that Heath Ledger could not have been alive when it was released as he did play the Joker role extremely well and deserves to hear people's praise.

The worst part about this film being released is that it will always be synonymous with the passing of Heath Ledger. A sad event.

I am am convinced, even if he was still alive people would have raved about the part he played as much as they have done, It is just more interesting to know now what he put his mind and body through to really get into the mind of the character he portrayed.

For me. It was a fantastic film with some quality moments.

A film that I will certainly go and buy.
