Tilley Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 is not as good or established as players such as Ramsey or Gunter that he is being compared to. Mattock, 36 appearances for Leicester City 1 for England U-17, 21 for England U-19 & 4 for England U-21. Ramsey, 16 appearances for Cardiff City before he joined Arsenal, where he has made one appearance. 15 for Wales U-17, 8 for Wales U-21. Gunter, 28 appearances for Cardiff City before he joined Tottenham, where he has made two appearances. Ok, he has made 7 appearances for the Welsh national team, but at club level he is not more experienced than Mattock & he is older. So to say Ramsey & Gunter are, 'more established' is ridiculous. Simply because they play for Arsenal & Spurs, respectively.

TrickyTrev Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 1-2 million, the same price of a DJ Campbell or a Steve Howard. Whoever bidded that amount wasn't being serious. Whoever bid that amount for Steve Howard and DJ Campbell weren't being particuarly clever.

Corky Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 Firstly, although Joe Mattock is a very promising young talent, he is not as good or established as players such as Bale, Ramsey or Gunter that he is being compared to.Secondly, the valuation of him has no bearing on the transfer fee paid for other players at the club such as Campbell or Howard, but it should reflect his value to our squad and the work that has been put in at academy level to nurture his talent. We are under no pressure to sell and although Joe said to me that he would like to go to Aston Villa at some point he is happy here. Having been capped at England u21 level and the price of today's inflated transfer market, Mandaric is likely to turn anything down below £3-4 million. Ramsey hardly played for Cardiff before moving to Arsenal. He was not an "established" player at all.

Just because Bale, Gunter and Ramsey are Welsh and have international caps, they're being sold for silly money. Didn't Bale cost £7 million odd? We need to be holding out for silly money like that if we are to sell Joe, especially as he is English and potentially (note potentially) a future England player. Silly money or no sale.
Spiritwalker Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 I don't think Mattock will be sold this summer he is still injured after all. It would be a shame to sell a good young player who has come through the ranks and while it may be in the clubs best intrests to sell him I don't think it would be a good move for him to become a squad player for West Ham or Sunderland playing a few Carling Cup games if he's lucky. To put a value on him is difficult, yes he has potential but not all players progress. While he looks solid for such a young player he has never blown me away when I've watched him. The Prem is full of managers with money to burn, 5m for Ramsey is crazy so nothing is out of the question but I would be suprised if Milan would knock back 2.5m and if that was invested back into the squad I think it would be good buisness.
Mansfield Fox Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 <b> Anyone know when Mattock's contract expires? And teams will pay £5 million, Because he's only at a young age, Not many highly rated left back's around nowadays and could be good prospects for clubs in the future. Get him why he's young and still learning. .. Just hope he hasn't got a relase fee clause on his contract.
Joe. Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 Noone will pay £5m. It actually wouldn't surprise me if Roy Keane did.
Bert Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 We need to insert a sell on clause fee. We've already turned down a £3m bid for him last season, so why would we accept less now?
Tommy G Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 We need to insert a sell on clause fee. We've already turned down a £3m bid for him last season, so why would we accept less now? 2 mill and a 20% sell on clause fee. If he turned into a wonder kid then we are quids in, if he flops then at least we got 2 mill in the bank for a flop. Happy days all round.

I couldn't see him being a flop either, but you never know. I think Sunderland could be a good team for him to go to if any. I like Keano and he would be a good influence, would probably get a game there too.

Keane did say in his press conference after signing Cisse that he was after one more player and it would be good if he could get him. I don't think Joe is just quite ready for the prem yet. Let's bring him on here, then his value will go up - and who knows, if we do well, he may want to stay here.

If MM thinks the money is right then I doubt he will have much say in the matter unfortunately
Guest Posted 30 August 2008 Posted 30 August 2008 Bentley's Roof article If true I'll be sad to see him go, but £3.5m ain't bad money and I wish the guy all the best
MPH Posted 30 August 2008 Posted 30 August 2008 The potential would more likely be paid for in the add ons.I would be staggered if anyone offered more than £2.25m down. At the moment Mattock is a work in progress. He's had the advantage of being big and strong for his age but that is already being negated and it's increasingly down to performances and achievement. Okay he's got his England age-group caps but I wouldn't say he's ever quite established himself as an automatic choice even in what was a relegated first team last season, so that would hardly enhance his value. Just as I said last season that King had more to his game than he'd shown at that time so I'm still waiting for the real Joe Mattock to impact on the first team. This is the marauding Joe Mattock who presses high and makes regular inroads into the channel around the edge of the opposing penalty box and who can deliver a worthwhile crack at goal when given the chance. So far I've seen a mostly restrained Mattock, a lad who sometimes misreads a crossfield pass or gets himself the wrong side of an opposing winger. The defensive chinks need to be ironed out and the attacking bonuses built in to his everyday first team game before he's ever going to be worth £3m plus. Paying big for potential is a mugs game, especially if your club has fairly limited resources. Far more likely is cash on potential delivered. So £2.25m with add-ons would be my guess as being a reasonable offer. But as mentioned in the close season, I'd doubt Joe is in any hurry to move at his age (others might be keen on his behalf) and another season of learning should pay dividends aplenty if he regains his fitness and stays clear of further injury. Especially if we get promoted. sorry to be picky, he he has more than his england age group caps... at the age of 17 he was playing in 2 age groups above his age... should of been playing for the u18's but not even the u19's was good enough for him.. oh no! only the u21's Perdantic person over and out.
MPH Posted 30 August 2008 Posted 30 August 2008 Bentley's Roof article fantastic! we finally get two lb's and agree to sell one of them! ( if that article is to be believed)
ronnup Posted 30 August 2008 Posted 30 August 2008 If we spend half of it on players, a left back that's got a future with the club, i wouldn't mind this.
Mark Posted 30 August 2008 Posted 30 August 2008 Last player to move for 3.5 million to Sunderland was a major success. He's best off here for another year, hope it's not another being forced out.

Babylon Posted 30 August 2008 Posted 30 August 2008 He's best off here for another year, hope it's not another being forced out. People may have said that to Piper, as it is the contract he got at Sunderland will set him up for life. If he had stayed and got injured he'd have to commentate on Radio Leicester for a living... oh hang on.
