Asha Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 It's always nice to hear positive comments from other fans like that after the last few seasons. But as Mablo said, we can't get complaicent.
Mickey O'Neil Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 Reading some of those comments gave me goose-bumps!
Thracian Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 I don't think there's any chance of Pearson getting complacent. It's an overused term but everything the guy does seems to reflect professionalism in its truest sense. As for the players, almost each and every one of them has genuine competition for his place and there's every indication so far that they all want to be part of the adventure. In fact it's another compliment to Pearson - and doubtless the generosity of Mandaric's wages - that he's managed to keep most if not all of the players he wanted. Already, several opposition fans have commented on the focused attitude we've taken at every match so far, and that includes the defeat at Fulham and the draw at Stockport. It's a vital quality and, again, something that reflects the respect the team has for the manager. I'd imagine the phrase "hard but fair" sits well on Pearson's shoulders and, if so, it is exactly what we've needed in a leader and the very essence of what will prevent complacency creeping in.
Daggers Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 I do not like this attitude. Alot of people both inside and out of the club seem to think we've won this division already. Not the case. That only matter in two circumstances: Firstly, that the players believe it and slack off. I don't think Pearson would let them and I don't think they're that stupid. Secondly, that saying it somehow places a hex on the club. I don't believe in superstition. I said to Tom on the phone after Chelts that if we don't succeed in automatic promotion then something severely bad will have gone wrong at the club. This isn't being cocky nor is it the result of ignorance - I've seen many matches at this level and I have never seen a team playing like we are currently doing in this division. Moreover, I don't believe we have reached our best as yet. When we start being able to focus on the match for 90 minutes and dictate the play the way that we currently do for 40-60 minutes of a game the best any team is going to do against us is hope for a draw. We have just been through the range of styles this division has to offer in Stockport's defensiveness, Cheltenham's harrying and Pool's finer passing game...and I put Hartlepool down as one of the leagues strongest opponents this season. But, and this is the singlemost important thing, if after the years of crap we have had to suffer we can't sit back and revel in what we currently have then when the hell do we get to enjoy it and crow a bit? We haven't won the league yet - but we have cemented ourselves as one of the favourites for automatic promotion.
Corky Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 I do not like this attitude. Alot of people both inside and out of the club seem to think we've won this division already. Not the case. I don't mind outsiders saying it, as long as we stay focused. We know that there is a long way to go this season. If we maintain this form for the majority of it I can see us winning the division, but I know we haven't won the league yet. It would be stupid and arrogant to suggest so. It's nice that people are praising us for our attitude and supporters, if we do go up I'll think we'll have a lot of well-wishers.

Manwell Pablo Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 Luckily, Pearson seems capable of bringing our players back down to earth and focus on one game at a time. Your basing that on a month. Don't get me wrong were winning games fantastic, long may it continue, I just don't like scores of Hartlepool and Leeds fans, and sections of our own support crowning as champions (hence why I said inside and out of the club Fatah) Harder tests to come than the likes of Dons and Tranmere. Long way to go as well.
Stevosevic Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 A very long way to go, we've had a good start but we havn't done anything yet. 42 games to go, anything can happen. Hopefully we will win promotion, but i'm certainly not going round telling people we are dead certs, nor am i thinking it.
CupidStunt Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 Some nice flattering comments there, probably mostly from fans who have seen it all in the lower leagues,so i'd take a good guess they know a good team when they see one The way i feel at the moment,i cant imagine anyone beating us easily, and can easily see this being another promotion in the shape of the season that Micky 'No bottom lip' adams took us up,correct me if i am wrong we only lost a handfull of games,6 i think
FilboFox Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 I don't think the comments will make the team complacent... Pearson won't let it happen. As for me though... it's great hearing stuff like that! Makes me feel really proud of the team... not something I've been able to do too often in recent years.

Long way to go as well. Don't worry about the outside supporters Manwell, as long as we don't get too ahead of ourselves. We've seen it all before to know that it could all fall apart. Anyway, sorry for that bit of negativity. Let's enjoy being where we are and playing the way we are
Tilley Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 We've won the league, give us Crewe away this Saturday & end the season, But, seriously, it is an amazing start, 3 wins out of four in the league, only one goal conceded, hammered a good team away in JPT, was ten minutes away from beating a Premiership side. It is time to keep our feet firmly on the ground though. Lets enjoy the praise, but make sure were getting the same praise come May.
Scow Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 I'm just enjoying the fact we're winning games and playing good football. We've had about 4/5 years of shit, where hopes have been raised at the start of each season only to be dashed by negative and regressive football, eventually resulting in relegation. Let's just enjoy the football we're playing and hope it continues. It's been a good start and I can see why fans are predicting automatic promotion, but as the cliché goes, take each game as it comes and see where that takes us. We're going to suffer set backs along the way and we will face teams that will make life difficult for us throughout the season.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 4 September 2008 Posted 4 September 2008 I do not like this attitude. Alot of people both inside and out of the club seem to think we've won this division already. Not the case. I completey agree the season finishes in 7 months alot can happen between now and then.
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 4 September 2008 Posted 4 September 2008 I do not like this attitude. Alot of people both inside and out of the club seem to think we've won this division already. Not the case. Agree - Leeds was on track to win the league and that died in the arse quick smart. But we are doing the right things, positive things, and as long as we keep it all up we will get the best results.
surrifox Posted 4 September 2008 Posted 4 September 2008 It doesn't matter what the supporters believe or say so long as the squad remains grounded and focussed I guess that this sort of hype from opposition fans goes with the territory to a certain extent, no use pretending otherwise- we are the biggest and best resourced club in the division (sorry Leeds but Bates can only pull his financial conjuring trick once and get away with it) and we cannot expect to be allowed to progress unnoticed and without comment. To an extent though this can be a force for good from our point of view - if opposition clubs start thinking that they are beaten before they even kick off against us that cannot but help surely? I get the impression that Mr Pearson will kick arse big time at the first sense of complacency among the players. In his interview after the Cheltenham game he made some reference that he was pleased to be scoring goals but was happier still about the performance of the defence and added something to the effect that he wanted to instill the attitude that other sides would come to regard it as an achievement and a privilege just to get a goal against us. No problem with that after all the unremitting $hite of recent years

People might have touted Leeds as promotion favourites but they had their chance last year and blew it. I was quite surprised they had that chance because I don't see McAllister as a successful manager. He'll get teams playing some football but you need more than that. Some of their fans don't sound optimistic.
Manwell Pablo Posted 4 September 2008 Posted 4 September 2008 You all seem to misunderstand me. I don't like it. This doesn't mean it's going to have a direct effect on the XI players we put out on the field.

Leeds slide started when Poyett left for spurs, leaving Wise on his own..'nuff said.
Thracian Posted 4 September 2008 Posted 4 September 2008 I think they've gone backwards, not impressed with his signings :D I was expecting something like that. Ironic that if he hadn't left the lad out off the play-off final Leeds might have scored and they might already have been up! Don't hink he's even in the team now for whatever reason - no wonder they're dropping points! But who cares? Leicester top and plus 8. Leeds nowhere and -1 in less than a month. The League table reads just fine to me.
