After such an encouraging start to the season it seems that complacency is creeping in with some players settling for not looking bad rather than really trying to win the game from start to finish.

No-one's been awful, it's just that the urgency has faded and needs to be revived. Gilbert's injury is a blow because we lack an obviously equal alternative. I would love to have gone with the genuine wing-back Luke O'Neill but nothing I saw a fortnight ago would justify that.

That we should lack an obvious option is as farcical as not having a replacement for Porter last season but with it being quite clear that few would relish the adventure of 3-4-3, I suppose our line-up will be the usual with Hobbs at right back and Kisnorbo/Tunchev at centre-back.

Defensively that may be dogged enough but as a supporting cast for a dangerous attack it's hardly exciting.

Pearson has no reason to change his personel other than to replace Gilbert and he doesn't seem to have many reviving options anyway. Perhaps we'll have five defenders on the bench this week!

Gradel, King Oakley, Dyer,

Fryatt, Howard.

Subs: 1. Henderson, 2. Morrison, 3. Mattock, 4. Berner, Anyone but Porter.

It's inevitably a bit iffy in defence but is the sort of mobile, fast-passing team I've wanted to see here for years. It's hard to drop top scorer Fryatt but he's so ineffective if he doesn't score and I'd like to see what impact McKay has on the team effort and the same with the genuinely creative Porter in midfield.

Our indifference just now in certain areas is painful to watch and the support of young full-backs Cox and Mattock, together with the passing of Porter and the clever runs of McKay may restore that missing urgency.

The aim is to make the side more inventive, more supportive and less pedestrian. Especially with so many seniors facing their third game in eight days. No need to worry about it happening though. :D

Yes I'd go with that, as soon as he came on Tuesday night his forward running immediately created more space for Dyer to be dangerous. Powell has proven very useful so far but not so much in the games where we've had to make most of the attacking strides.

I won't mock your comment but I eliminated my initial choice Tunchev because he wouldn't find communication that easy in English and Kisnorbo's never struck me as a natural or organising captain.

King has captained teams and they've won in style. It wasn't an easy choice. We're not well blessed with captaincy material.

At the risk of fuelling your fire, is it not fair to point out that King was 'captaining' a team of talented, attack-minded youngsters that were well coached and steered to success?

I've seen King play senior football for City and watched a majority of his U21 caps and I can't say I've ever seen him impose himself as a communicative type, he doesn't even 'boss' the midfield, nor does he have a Stevie-G-esque lead-by-great-example style to him.

I was leader of my Scout pack, it doesn't mean I should run for president; if you sincerely believe King's ready to captain a League One outfit then all the very best to you but I'm pretty sure even you know that's just eccentric for the sakes of being eccentric. I like King, I want him to develop, I want him to grow, I want him to be an asset for City and for Wales - but he's hardly setting the world alight on either stage and I don't think "limp" is an unfair word to use to describe a lot of his performances.

Paragraph 1) Beaglehole gave the Academy and reserves licence to express themselves but the players did the job in no uncertain manner and with King at the heart of much that went on.

2) If we had a verbal inspiration or a Stevie-G sort I'd have picked them for captain. King's teams seem to get results including our first team this season (with him) compared with last season when we were abysmal (even with Kisnorbo).

3) Peter Shilton was a leader in his scout group (60th Leicester's). He did okay. You shouldn't sell yourself short especially considering the sort of people who do get to be President. :D
