Best Gig

What's the best gig you have ever been too? Where, when, who setting, why it was so good. Appoligise if similar thread has been done before.

I'll go first.

Mine was last Thursday, were i saw Something with Numbers at a small intimate venue that holds 300 i would of said there was 200-220. It was a great set they played a good mix of there older and new songs for about 1hr 30m. The lead singer never missed a note for the whole gig and was absoultely awesome, leaving the venue everybody just seemed to stand around in amazement of how good it was.

Also it was great to go with half a dozen or so mates that were also massive fans of the band.

The best gig I ever went to was also my first, which should mean that all the others I've been to since have been a disappointment, but that's not really how it's worked out.

I saw Morrissey at De Montfort Hall in 1991 on the 'Kill Uncle' tour. It was absolutely insane - it was his first proper solo tour, and to say that the atmosphere was charged with anticipation would be an understatement. I hadn't expected much, because I didn't think much to the record at the time, but he had a new band that belted out the songs as if their life depended on it. Coupled with stage invasions throughout the gig it was just a completely joyous experience. I've seen Morrissey since, and the performances have been better, but there's been nothing to match it atmosphere wise

The Datsuns and the Polyphonic Spree at the NME awards show comes close, years ago.

But the best gig by far was at 93 Feet East, a pokey little club near Brick Lane in London. Went and saw, quite literally (I mean, it's actually a matter of fact, not opinion) the single coolest band on the entire planet:

Guitar. Motha****in. Wolf.

I have never experienced that sort of pure euphoria before or since.

Fez and I passed 93 Feet East on our wander down Brick Lane. We want to go there.

Standard club nights are pretty overrated, to be honest. I've been to a couple of just sort of drum and bass nights there and it's never really as full as you'd hope, the drinks are horribly expensive and the general atmosphere of the place is a little too pretentious for even the indie scenesters to really enjoy themselves, I think.

Makes a terrific venue, though.

Been to quite a few 'big ' gigs, but by far, the best gig I ever went to was the first time I saw The Wrinkly Pink Catsuits (old Leicester band) @ The Charlotte. I'm sure that anyone who saw them when they were in their pomp would agree they were brilliant.

Also, The Libertines were good in Wolverhampton & Bloc Party @ Reading '07.

I'd choose my first gig too.

Pink Floyd doing 'The wall' at Earls court in 1980. Thought I'd start at the top and work down......

Simon

Jealous. Sadly no where near old enough to have ever experienced Floyd in their prime.

For me, it has to be Muse at Wembley Stadium. Absolutely awesome. :punk:

I'll come. Go out round Brick Lane all the time. Cafe 1001, Big Chill Bar, Vibe Bar, all very pleasant places to spend an evening.

Still haven't been to 93 Feet East. Been so many hip hop nights I've almost gone to but never quite made it for one reason or another. Love that general area though, in fact the lady and I are moving there in January.

Technically not a gig. But still, Klaxons, Leeds '07, the NME tent.

I was there. Had it spoiled for me by some plastered northern chav twirling around and stubbing me with a fag at least a dozen times in the process.

Pixies - DeMontfort Hall - 1990 Just totally awesome and at the peak of their game. Great, great music at a brilliant venue (too sanitised now though) Joey Santiago's guitar solo whilst having a strobe on him with the lights down so that it looked like he was moving in stop motion has to be the best stage effect I've ever seen.

The Hives - Rock City - 2004 Howling Pele Almqvist is the best frontman, no question. Works the crowd and so much energy. They do this great thing half way through Hate To Say where the bass carries on but everyone else stands frozen still for about a minute and then they all come back in at the same time. Fantastic!

All About Eve - Aston Villa Leisure Centre - 1989 My first gig and I really fancied Julianne Regan. Gorgeous voice! Not technically accomplished, but my first. You always remember your first don't you.

The Cowboy Junkies - The Rescue Rooms - 2007 So different to any other gig I've been to. Margot Timmins has such a beautiful and delicate voice, so everyone was just stood completely silent and reverent. Spine-tingling!

The Flaming Lips - DeMontfort Student Union Hall - 1999 They were only the support for Mercury Rev, but they completely outperformed them. Wayne Coyne had this huge gong on the stage that he kept bashing at appropriate moments. Quirkly different, they just stole the show.

I must have easily seen more than 50 bands in my time - not counting local ones without a recording contract.

From an older, 5 best gigs thread.

Fleet Foxes, who I saw recently, might just nose in there now.
