Leicester City chairman Milan Mandaric today delivered the perfect Christmas present to Foxes fans when he announced the news that Matty Fryatt had signed a new three-and-a-half year contract with the club.

The 22-year-old striker has become one of the most talked about players in the Football League - bagging an incredible 23 goals for the season to date.

And his efforts on the pitch have been rewarded by the Foxes chief - with the new deal tying the player to the club until at least the end of the 2011-12 campaign.

Mandaric said: "I am obviously delighted that Matty has committed his future to us. He has been an important contributor to the success that we have had on the field so far and I am pleased that all his hard work on the training ground has paid off.

"The contract negotiations were long and drawn out as you would expect - but there was never any doubt in my mind that Matty would sign for us because he loves this club. His heart is here - and he knows that after some disappointing years we are on the up once again.

"We are currently on target to meet our objective of promotion and the fact that Matty has committed his future to us can only help us in that quest.

"We are a club going in the right direction and we will move hell and earth to hold on to our best players.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank our fans for the fantastic support that they continue to show to their club and I hope this news comes as a perfect Christmas present to them."

Manager Nigel Pearson added: "Matty is really enjoying his football and he has done very well for us so far.

"He is an exceptional young talent and I am delighted that he has committed his future to us."

Fryatt recently made national headlines when he scored back-to-back hat-tricks against Dagenham & Redbridge and Southend respectively - making his the first Leicester player to complete such a feat since for over 50 years.

He also became the first City player since 1966 to grab 20 goals before Christmas when he opened the scoring in the Shrimpers clash.

The player added: "The fans have played a big part in me signing the new deal. I have heard them chanting 'sign him up' which was good to hear.

"The manager and his staff have been brilliant with me. We have a structure here now and you know what you are doing one day to the next. I have been allowed to be me and I have appreciated that. They have got the best out of me."

Fryatt joined the club from Walsall for an undisclosed fee in January 2006 - and has scored 35 goals from his 91 starts to date.

Sod the presents or the turkey, this has made my Christmas.

Remember, A Matty Fryatt is for life (2012) not just for Christmas.

Ho Ho Ho.

I'm pleased, not sure about him "loving the club" according to Mandaric but now the speculation is over and we can get on with the rest of the season.

Still don't understand the comments that we should flog him. 23 goals before Christmas and you're saying sell him? We've been after a goalscorer for years and we have one and now some would sell him. Ludicrous. He's a different player this season with different players around him and different management. Don't judge him on last season's performances. This is good news. Hopefully a nice hat-trick against Leeds to say thanks for the support
